There are two names on the same page and the writing is easier to read than in some other locations; I am pretty sure it is Heredeth. The only family I’ve found with a similar surname was that of William and Melissa Heredith on the 1850 Sangamon County census. Their family was residing within a few dwellings of at least two other households associated with the Alsbury and/or Henry families. William Heredith was born in Ohio ca 1830…. (right area, right time). There was no Nancy or Julia listed. The two Heredeth names in the book are Nancy and Julia – based on the appearance of the hair, I think Nancy was an adult; Julia may have been her child. I cannot be absolute, but there is reason to believe both of these hair samples were entered 1862-1866. I strongly suspect, based on other patterns, that Heredeth is Nancy’s married name and that she is a descendant of Charles and Jane (Henry) Alsbury –either a child or grandchild so her maiden name could be almost anything. Alternately, Nancy could be an older child or a grandchild of Thomas and Phoebe (Ashbrook) Tucker; based on her position in the book, that is less likely, but not impossible.

The book was begun sometime in the late 1850s by my g-g-grandmother when she lived in Pike County, Illinois. Some family members had at one time been (or were still) residents of counties near Pike including Sangamon, Adams, Schuyler, etc; others moved to Iowa, Missouri or other “points west.” Some were probably descendants of a connection in earlier generations in either Virginia (now WV), Ohio and/or Indiana as the family migrated west (first settling in Illinois ca 1825). I am actively searching for information on the families represented in the book and need to identify some individuals to find the family connection. Surnames: Akin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kg.2ADI/1519.1 Message Board Post: Steve: I have a considerable amount of Akin data. I am the one who supplied Jon Egge with the skeleton for descendants of Thomas and Phoebe (Ashbrook) Tucker that he has listed on the website, though much of my information was based on the work of Renner, Knotts and Reynolds. I do have some additional resources, though, that were handed down through my grandmother. The best is the book of hair from more than 130 family members that was first put together in the late 1850s (original entries made no later than 1862, though there were samples added after that year). I see from a message you posted that you know of the Reeder/Chenoweth connection. The Akin family and the Alsbury family have 3 separate marriage I know of. Because of that, I have "poked" into the Akin family fairly extensively. In fact, I have samples of hair from Augustus Akin and his children, as well as Joel Akin and his children. As for your John M. Akin born Aug 24, 1855 - I DO not believe he was a child of Augustus Akin, at least not by his Alsbury wife -all of their first nine children are entered in order in the hairbook. Their 5th child was born 17 November 1854 -it is hard to believe there was another in August of 55 who was skipped when the 6th entry is for a child born in 1856. I suppose it is possible he was married before he married Alsbury, and had children old enough to be a father by 1855, but I do not have anything to indicate that. Joel Akin, son of Isham and Elvey, had a son named John M who was born 13 Jan 1856. I have the first part (transcribed) of a letter written by Joel Akin to his his father in 1849, telling of his brother's death. I would love to connect with you and compare questions and answers about this family. I have at least one (I think maybe 2) Akin marriages into the Ingram family; I also have a list of the children of John Akin and his wife, Frankie that gives birthdates for all -it was evidently copied from the family bible by a son who went to Oregon. His descendant still has it -don't know if you have it or not. Contact me -- jenlane57@yahoomail.com

As I said in my previous message, my brother is a participant in the Allison/Ellison DNA Project. His DNA score matches the DNA score of a descendant of Benjamin Allison. Benjamin moved form Orange Co., NY to Greenbrier Co., VA in the 1700s and then to Gallia Co., OH where Benjamin died in the early 1800s. Descendants of Benjamin moved to Pike Co., IL. Albert Ward Allison is one of those descendants of Benjamin. If you want a more complete genealogy of the descendants of Benjamin Allison, which includes your Albert, please contact me privately. Hi Researchers, Has anyone had the chance to visit and research or hired a researcher to help you at the National Archives? Would you like to in the future? Be aware that NARA is considering closing on evenings and Saturdays making those who are unable to visit during the week because of work or travel one less option to research. Please consider signing the petition to show NARA how important it is to keep public access accessible to genealogy researchers.
