PIKE PRESS (Wednesday, April 9, 1997) carried a story about restoring grave markers in the Clemmons Cemetery. The story is as follows: Thirteen members of Pittsfield Boy Scout Troop #152 traveled to Milton Saturday, March 22 to assist fellow Scout Zack Boren in the completion of his Eagle Scout project. Scouts, assisted by adult leaders, cleaned brush around the Clemmons Cemetery located in a farm field east of Milton. Twenty grave stones were receoved and placed within the original wrought iron enclosure. The antique fence was scraped and painted gray as part of the project. Boren chose the project, in part, because the cemetery is the burial place of his great-great-great-great grandfather, John Peter Clemmons, first owner of the land. Boren worked with Scouts to unearth, recover and reset Clemmons' stone, which was lying on its back three-and-a-half feet underground. Clemmons came to Pike County in 1825 and died in 1882. The rank of Eagle Scout is Boy Scouting's highest honor, according to long time and dedicated Scouts upon completion of a special Eagle service project. Work on the Clemmons Cemetery restoration was followed by the Scouts camping out on land owned by Jane Parks, Boren's grandmother. Boren is a sophomore at Pittsfield High School and is the son of Michael and Julia Boren of Pittsfield. Ray Davenport of Pittsfield is Scoutmaster of Troop #152. Does any of the Pike County cemetery books include the Clemmons Cemetery? If they do I would greatly appreciate a look-up. Who besides John Peter Clemmons is buried there? Who do the "twenty grave stones" that were recovered belong to? Calvin
Hello Melvin- Are you able identify Miss Dean with her given name? Although the Dean's and Orr's are not my primary focus they do entered into what I've collected. Thanks, John Mahon Melvin McAllister wrote: > Here is one for the Dean and Orr researchers. Then it's straight across the Mississippi flood plain (4 miles), across the bridge, into Missouri, and you're in Louisiana MO. The thing that struck me about Louisiana is that the main north-south road through town is really brightly lit now. Lots of old-fashioned looking lamp posts but really bright.
Here is one for the Dean and Orr researchers. The diary of 18 March 1861 states that Anderson Orr was married to Miss Dean his sister in law this morning. The IL marriage record shows this in Calhoun County. They later went to Souther IL.
