This is a plot about four acres is fenced with cyclone fence and is well maintained. Burials date from 1836 to 1975. I have been there reading my own family plots.     3. Pike County once more came out as number one for the number of deer taken this year in the firearms season. There were 2,522 taken during the first three day season in November and another 1069 taken in the second four day season in December, for a total of 3,591. Adams county came in second with a total of 2,622.

    3. Greg, The Quincy Hearld Whig usually covers our area on obits and the Jacksonville Courier. Both would be able to send you a copy if you wrote them and the current local paper is the Pike Press which also does obits for our area. You might ask Barb Gay about Mavis Turnbaugh Wike's papers. If she had kids they probably have them. I have my mothers since we shared a great interest in them and beleive me she did a ton of work and its all in my computer room. It took a pickup bed to bring it home. Colleen B Pike County Express, Barry, Illinois, 26 Jan 1999, Sec.A. p.8., col. 1; Obituary: Marvin R. Turnbaugh, 86, of Nebo, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at the home of his son in rural Pittsfield. He was born in a log cabin in Spring Creek Township in Pike County Feb. 29, 1912, a son of the late Otho Thomas and Olive Harlow Turnbaugh. He married Maudine Scranton Turnbaugh June 21, 1933 in Pittsfield. She preceded him in death May 5, 1980. Mr Turnbaugh was a lifelong Pike County grain and livestock farmer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He belonged to Farmers Ridge Church of Christ. Survivors include 3 sons, Richard Turnbaugh of Coatsburg, Dr. Neal Turnbaugh of Marshall, Mo., and Gene Turngaugh of rural Pittsfield; 2 daughters, Peggy Ellen Westerhold of White Hall and Edna De Peugh of Decatur; 2 sisters, Imohl Brown of Chico, Calif., and Doronty Meyers of Grant, Neb.; 13 grandchildre; 15 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Ralph and Beech Turnbaugh. Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. at Ward Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill conducted by Dr. Neal Turnbaugh and Rev. Wayne Guthrie. Memorials may be made to the charity of organization of donor's choice.

    3. Dwight Brokaw Dwight Brokaw age 91, of Pittsfield died Wednesday evening, Jan 6, 1999 at Illini Hospital. Born April 29, 1907 in Summer Hill, he was the son of the late Elmer Brokaw and Anna Elliott Lyman Brokaw. He married Thelma McClintock on Oct. 28, 1933 in Quincy and she preceeded him in death on Feb. 24, 1993. Surviving are two great-nieces, Lou Ann Ladage of Chatham, and Mrs. Dave (Amy) Nelson of Ashland; and one great-nephew, Rob Lyman of Waverly. He was preceeded in death by his parents; wife; one nephew Gordon "Butch" Lyman who was raised in his home; two half-sisters, Frankie Hark and Ora Ricks; and one half-brother Loren Lyman. Mr. Brokaw farmed near Summer Hill all his life. He was past road commissioner for Martinsburg township and a member of the Pittfield Masonic Lodge #790 AF & AM, Pike County Saddle Club, and the Pike County Democratic Party. Note 1: I checked and I have Elmer Brokaw as the 10th of 12 children of Jasper Brokaw. Jasper b. 12 Aug. 1828 d. 26 Dec. 1901 bur. French Cem near Milton, IL. Note 2: I then looked in my McClintock Memorial by A. Louise Shelton and find on page 139. Thelma Mae McClintock b. Dec 28, 1908; m. Oct. 28, 1933, Quincy, to Clarence Dwight Brokaw b. Apr. 29, 1907, M'burg Twsp s/o Elmer Brokaw & Anna Elliott. Thelma emp Brown Shoe Co. Dwight emp State Highway Comm, M'burg 24 years, now (sic 1985) a farmer in Pleasant Hill, Ill.

    2. Barb, Pleasant Vale Township Page 836 The first parties married were Potter Saxhorn and Matilda Stanley in the year 1825. Page 846 John Judd, railroad section overseer, New Caonton was born in Germany in 1834, the son of Frank Judd, came to America in 1845 adn to this county in 1851, lived at Cincinnati Landing 3 years, then came to New Canton, where in 1861 he married Jane Saxbury and they have had three children. Mrs. J. is a daughter of early pioneers of this county, her parents being the first couple married after the county-seat was moved to pittsfield. Her mother carried the banner at the old settlers' meeting in 1879, but died the same year. Mr. Judd's early life was spent in a tabocco factory. Since 1873 he has been in the employ of the C.B. & Q. RR. Has never had an accident happen on his part of the road. Mrs. J is a member of the Presbyterian Church.     2. Page 391 Hon. William Elliott served from January 1839 till January, 1848. He was esteemed as a worthy man, a warm friend and a good lawyer. He served in the Black Hawk War, and was wounded in a hand-to-hand conflict with a single Indian, whom he killed. He was a quartermaster in the 4th Regiment during the Mexican war, and served through. He returned to Lewistown and continued his practice until about 1856, when he moved upon a farm in Peoria county, near Farmington, where he died in February 1871. Page 469 - Pearl Township - Churches Trinity M.E. Church is located at Pearl Landing on the Illinois river. It was organized in 1856 by Rev. E. Elliott. Page 539 Moses Elliott was born in Wheeling, VA, March 18m 1819 and is the son of John and Esther elliott, deceased; was raised on a farm in Ross county, Ohio; received a common-school education, and was the eldest of 10 childre. He was married Oct 2, 1853 to Jane Perry, daughter of Joseph Perry, deceased, and now resides on sec 35, Griggsville township, engated in farming and stock-raising. Mrs. Elliott was born in Ireland Aug. 24, 1815 and came with her parents to Canada in 1834 and to to Pike county in 1849. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott have two sons, Geo. P and Richard W. Page 680 Charles A. Elliott, of the firm of Gano, shriver & Elliott, drygoods dealers, Pittsfield, is a son of abner and Ruth (Wells) Elliott, the former a native of Virginia and the latter of Kentucky. Charles A. is a native of the Buckeye State, where he was born in 1854, he came to this county in 1872 and embarked in the mercantile business in Pittsfield in 1879. Pge 681 Gano, Shriver & Elliott, dealers in dry-goods and clothing. This is the largest house of the kind in Pittsfield, and is a consolidationf of the firms of Gano and Shriver Brothers. The firs has had an experience of 26 years in New York city, and Felicity, Ohio, and at present carried a stock of $40,000 with an average sale of $85,000 per year. The store is 100 feet in length and 25 in width, and two storie high, all occupied. A custom tailoring department is connected with it on the upper floor, well stocked with goods. This firs has been identified with the mercantile interests of the city for many years and possesses the energy, enterprise and reliability of business men. Page 718 Jasper Brokaw, agriculturist, sec 17, P.O. Martinsburg, was born in Somerset county, NJ August 12, 1828, and is a son of abraham and Sarah Brokaw, deceased; he worked with his father in the wood-yard until 18 years of age; came to Eastern Illinois with his parents in 1844, and in 1851 located in Pike county, and this year also he married Miss Martha Maroon, daughter of Wm. Maroon, deceased, and they had 6 children, namely, william, George, John, Sarah, Martha and Charley. Mrs. B died in March 1863, and Mr. B the next year married Mrs. Amelia Toothaker, and they have had 6 children; Liona, Priscilla, Albert, Elmer, Cora A and Eva V. Mr. B is a farmer making wheat-raising a specialty. His brother Uriah, served over a year in the late war, where he lost his life. Hope something here is a connection. He was born in Griggsville in 1851, and as a lawyer he now has a successful practice. Page 515 Griggsville - at an election held April 15, 1879, the following officers were elected: Mayor, Daniel Dean, Aldermen, James B. Morrison, H.L.Hurt, Wm. A. Phyllis, Under Detroit Township - Page 430 Sarah allen was born in Yorkshire, Eng., Jan 21, 1828, and is the daughter of John Burlend, deceased, who brought his family to America in 1831, and, like all pioneers, endured many hardships. he died April 4, 1871, aged 88 years. Mrs. allen was married May 4, 1852 to Francis allen, and they had 4 children, Charlotte M., John W., deceased, Francis E. and David Franklin. Charlotte is married to Sylvester Thompson and resides near Pittsfield. Mr. Allen was a farmer on sec 16 until his death which occurred July 23, 1874. He belonged to the Episcopal Church, and was a prominent and worthy citizen. Hope this is a connection of some type for you.
