    1. Re: [ILPIKE] Interesting Place names
    2. I think Pike County has two other interesting place names. Time, I know of no other place with that name. Does anyone know where did that name came from? Also, Fishhook, Illinois. What an interesting name for a town. And, it's not even on the river. I've been to Time, but I've never been to Fishhook. I'd think I'd really like to visit Fishhook sometime.

    3. One more attempt to determine when a town was named. During my research for a history book of my hometown, there was a person who wrote a book of a certain gold and coal mining area. Almost none of the towns in the area now exist. He learned when the towns existed by looking at the postal records. For a post office to be extablished, there had to be a form filled out which showed a map and location of the town (or place as sometimes a postoffice was nothing but a place in someones farmhouse). There will be records somewhere. I would assume the local postmaster could tell you where to get them. They will probably be in the Nation Archives records. The histroy of towns in Pike County is rather interesting. ----- Original Message ----- From: Melvin McAllister <melmac@cybersurfers.net> To: <ILPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 28, 1999 6:25 PM Subject: Re: [ILPIKE] fcruble > I have a sheet that I copied from the Pittsfield Library that is the cover > sheet for the 1840 Census Index. 3. No, I got that from the Cemetery discriptions but I am going to try to find out. Surely one of the History books has it. I would say when the town was officially incorporated. They say the first settlers were there in 1822 and thats probably when it was called Fairfield. 3. There is an article about Time, Illinois and Pike County, in today's Chicago Tribune. The story talks about the lack of concern about the Y2K problem. "We're just keeping our pencils sharp," quipped 56-year-old Willard Daniels, village trustee. I thought that those interested in Pike Co., might enjoy the story. 3. Greetings from Colorado! I am trying to locate the burial location of a Sarah Lamb Wilson, born May 31, 1853, Indiana, died July 3, 1895. She is listed as passing away at Baylis, Pike County, Illinois. Baylis I believe is in New Salem town ship. She was probably buried in the Baylis cemetery but there could have been another cemetery close by. Her husband Oscar Lewis Wilson was a United Brethren Minister in that area. Does anyone have a cemetery listing for Baylis Cemetery or other close-by cemeteries that you could see if Sarah is listed? Also, does anyone hava any listings for the united Brethren Church that would have been in this area about 1895? Does this fit in with anything that anyone might have on the Wilson clan for Pike County? Thanks for any help that you might be able of give. Cheers, Noel Matthews noelm@noelm.com

    3. The Pittsfield Library has the Pike County Atlases of at least two years-1872 and 1912. I have collected some (mostly just Griggsvill and New Salem) for myself over the years and have lost track of when they were for. If someone could transmit me the different townships, I could then sent them to anyone who wanted them. This seems much easier than looking to see if certan people were there when. I have found that it is very revealing to find who was living down the road. I see that many of my relatives are concentrated in a certain area. ----- Original Message ----- From: <KGSCHR@aol.com> To: <ILPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 26, 1999 4:43 PM Subject: Re: [ILPIKE] Atlas > Pat > Any Deeders listed?
