I have read these debates with interest. I would like to think that the ancestors we all so eargerly seek would be more compassionate than perhaps we are. I think simply to survive our ancestors thought it the norm to reach out to help neighbors, friends, and strangers in need. Perhaps it was also because it was a more gentle life style. Sometimes we fancy that our lives are so much busier than in times past, we simply don't have time to reach out to others. Then we need to reflect on their daily lives. How busy can we be if we don't have to cut our own wood for heat, care for the horses even if it's a night like tonight (3 degrees here). Hungry? Shall we order in, microwave, or cook? Perhaps we should go to the forest, shoot some game (if we can find it), clean it, build the fire, cook it, etc. Then shall we use the dishwasher and trash compactor or do we need to haul water, boil, and clean? And this is only the beginning of the daily life of those pioneers we love. But at the end of the day..most took a little time for prayer, family, and friends in need. Maybe we are all looking for the wrong thing from our ancestors.
Hi, Yes, I would appreciate that Pike County info on French marriages. It'spossible, of course, that thge French sisters located in a county adjacent to Pike. Bob Lynn
Bob your thinking is pretty sound. I know nothing about the French line but I do know that families tended to travel and settle together in the westward migration. I have a George W. Williams that married Parmelia Nicholson 28 of July 1828 in Pike Co. which made them some of the first settlers in Pike Co. I would like to know who he belonged to. Their granddaughter Nora Williams married our Edward Ruble. Her fathers name was Henry J. Williams who married Mary Main? I find a Henry J.Williams married to a Rosa but not Mary. Got anything on the Williams? There are several French marriages in the early Marriage book. Do you need those? Greetings, I have a HANNAH FRENCH who married (possibly) a Joshua Williams in Pike County, Illinois on November 11, 1836. I suspect that she is descended from JEREMIAH FRENCH 1762-1834 (died Ohio), a private in the Hunterdon Co Militia New Jersey, during the Revolutionary War. His wife was HANNAH FINCH WILLIAMS FRENCH. They had, we believe, eight children: MARY ("POLLY" FRENCH) wife of George W. Lynn of community of Perry in Pike County, Sara Ann, Nathaniel, Moses. Elizabeth, Jeremiah Jr., William, and Hannah FRENCH. According to my source document, after their father died in Butler Co., Ohio in 1834, three or four of his daughters moved to Illinois "between the Mississippi and Illinois River" which, of course would include Pike County. We know that MARY FRENCH LYNN was one of those daughters. It's likely the other daughtersd would have been nearby. That's why I believe that the HANNAH FRENCH married in Pike County in 1836 is one of those daughers: the name, the geographicallocation, and the date of marriage all fit. Please let me know what you think. Best regards from beautiful Alaska, BOB LYNN Researching in Pike County: LYNN/LINN, FRENCH, DALE, LYLE, GRAY, REED, SCHAFFNIT, HAM.
Pat, I just rear all the crap you got over that prayer request. Maybe we should get down on our knees and pray for those who don't seem to think prayer is necessary and don't want to take two minutes to say a quick prayer for a family in terrible need of it. P*** on them. Dorothy fcruble wrote:
Meg, Thanks for reminding us of how lucky we are that our ancestors survived so that we could be here at all (!), and that we probably all need to slow down a little. Vanette
It is OK Pat - your work and your thoughts are appreciated. I agree that we should keep geanology as the real focus of ILPIKE, but we all digress from time to time. While I felt great sympathy and said a short prayer, I simply deleted the message. The messenger has always had a tough time. Ok, I don't need to me told over and over again. I am sorry I have offended you and will not send anymore. This is the first I have sent. I have sent a ton of genealogy to you and plan to send more. I wish I got as much response from that as I did something I thought was important. Please respond to bentley@cillnet.com This individual is not on the ILPIKE mail list so they will not see your response if you send your reply to the list. They carry all newspapers both new and old ones that no longer exist. And in another area they have County history books and much more. Also parking is under ground so you have the best of both worlds. And to talk about the chain letter I don't think it hurt anyone to read it. All the complaining took up more of my time than the letter did. To make it simple read the subject and if doesn't ring a bell delete it so you don't have to read it. All I ask is have a heart how would you react if it was your loved one. >>
First I apologize for not responding sooner - I have been a little under the weather this week and have not kept up with things as I should have. I would greatly appreciate it if this "Prayer Chain" thread would end now. Pat is a wonderful person who is always willing to look up information for anyone who asks and while this list may not have been the most appropriate place to post the "Prayer Chain" I feel certain it was done only with the best of intentions. The Pike Co list is one of the best lists I have ever been a member of and this type of thread is rare and I would like to keep it that way. I do not like to see lists with rules regarding what can and cannot be posted and as the list manager for ILPIKE I have no intentions of doing that with this list. All I ask is that everyone get along and help each other in their search and try to keep the posts relevant to our research. However, from this point on I would greatly appreciate it if when you see a post that you do not feel should have been posted please bring your concerns to me privately instead of sending them to the list. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Have a wonderful evening, Barbara Freeman ILPIKE List Manager Pike Co ILGenWeb County Coordinator
Pat We need more angels like you in life and Genealogy God Bless You Molly
Janet I would be interested in the David Hull information. Someone sent me some information on some Hull that came from Ohio. But I cannot fine it. So if they see this could you send it to me again Sharon D.
Pat, Don't worry, only the things that important to you in life count. That make you a person, I sent my prayer. Norm
Pat I didn't mine the letter, a little time from my research is no big deal. I know you have looked up a lot of information for me and other. I am so glad to have someone who is welling to help. So you have no complaints from. Sharon D.
Concur. Norm
I concur, But I did read the message, gave a prayer, (figured it wouldn't hurt me) and then deleted. If the message is real, a prayer doesn't cost much, if it's not (then shame on them). Norm, Gerald N. Leggett
I'm sorry but I have to forgive my fellow Pike Countian for this one little indiscretion posted to the list. I wouldn't have responded except for the fact it came from Pat. After all she has contributed to the list all summer and winter months I think we can allow her this. How many of us have asked her for information and to do look ups for us. I know I have and she has been very gracious about sending me anything I've asked for. ENOUGH SAID !!!!!!! Now about these Hulls in Pike county? I have a testimonial about David Denton Hull written to the editor, but could not find an obituary on him. It was written by a neighbor of his ( looks like Jno. M. Shaney ). Anyone recognize that name from Pike County. It tells of David coming to IL. as a young child. David died at the ripe old age of 95 years. Must have done something right to live that long.It was Written to the editor of the Barry Adage 10 April, 1907. It goes on to tell how he fought the Indians in this unsettled part of the country. States he left nine children and ninety one grand and great-grandchildren.
Hello, I want to thank Dorothy for sending the information about the History book and also the person who sent the webpage. My ancestor Amanda Jane 'Jennie" FRENCH married George Washington HIGDON 25 November 1870 in Griggsville. the son of Andrew HIGDON and Elizabeth ASHLOCK My next question is who were Amanda's parents and siblings? Anyone out there working on the FRENCH line who could help me I would love to hear from you. I have no information on the FRENCH line but will be happy to share the part I have for Amanda.
