    3. There is a marina and restaurant. In fact, there was a bit of skulduggery regarding the placement of the road off the bridge. The road was lowered to accomodate access to the marina to the point that it now is susceptible to flooding by just moderate river flooding. 2. Pat, I believe I know exactly where your grandfathers farm was. When we get to go to IL we take the Harley and ride the river road sometimes all the way to Hannible. I believ we have stopped at the restuarant there before. I can't wait till spring break hopping to get back there again. Tammy

    3. Thats true but I want to tell you if they had not dynamted the the damn near Hull all the transverse levees would have collapsed and Rocport, Pl. Hill , and New Canton would have been flooded. Transverse levees are the ones that don't run next to the river but rather toward the bluffs every so many miles. When Hull was flooded they had to go to the bottom of what was left of the levee and dynamite it so the pressure would lessen on the transverse levee between New Canton and Hull. They said if that broke everything was down hill from there and that included. Stark brothers nursery in Atlas, Rockport, and Pl. Hill. 3. Only below the Bluffs. The highway that passes through Atlas essentially marks the absolute flood limits. The bluffs are just east of this highway and ascends rather steeply upwards from it. The floods in '93 just reached the edge of Rockport but did not inundate it. Before any flood would broach the top of the bluffs, the animals would begin gathering two-by-two :) :) :) If you want to see a topography map of the bluffs in all their glory, go to http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.5528&lon=-90.9203&s=200&size=m Lonna Poland wrote: > > Is there still a serious flood threat in that area after what happened in > '93? > > > Hah! 3. You do not have to be related to a Mason to become one! You only have to "ask one to be one"! That is, simply say to a Mason that you would like to become a member and you will gladly be given a petition to join! There are affiliated organizations where you must either be a Mason to join, or be a woman related to a Mason. My husband/father/grandfather/great-grandfather are Masons, and we belong to several of the affiliated groups between us. Jann Bass

    3. Thanks for this information. Would you happen to know if it's true that in order to become a member of the Masons you have to have a relative who is a member, or an ancestor? This is my only reason for trying to find my grandfather's Masonic information, as it's been impossible to trace his ancestry because he was orphaned very young. > The Illinois Masonic Lodge Grand Sec is at 2866 Via Verde St, PO Box 4147 > Springfield IL 62703. 3. The Illinois Masonic Lodge Grand Sec is at 2866 Via Verde St, PO Box 4147 Springfield IL 62703. Email is www.ilmason.org. Phone is 217-529-8900. The only record they will most likely have is who belonged to what lodge. This is from books that were published and later given to the Illinois Sec. All the original records and books were destroyed in a fire. When I was there, the secretary had a drawer full of requests that she was going to get around to answering when she had a free moment. I have later received word from a cousin that she actually go a reply by mail from them. I am sure the Illinois Sec will give you the address of the Hull and Hannibal lodges if they are existing. There are still several Masonic Lodges in Pike County. Some have consolidated with Pittsfield. Perry has one. New Salem consolidated several years ago. The Perry lodge was very cooperative. The Pittsfield lodge was not interested in looking for old records and I was not even told if they had them. They may have different officers now. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lonna Poland <lonna@granbury.com> To: <ILPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 11:28 AM Subject: [ILPIKE] Masonic lookup? > I was told by my father that my grandfather, Andrew MAISE, was a Mason. 3. Lonna- There were two Masonic lodges in Hannibal. They consolidated some years back, but have records for both lodges. I don't know the exact web address, but if you do a search on any decent search engine for "Masonic lodge Hannibal" you will find the web page for the Hannibal Lodge. There is an email address for contacts on their page. Jann Bass
