    1. Re: [ILPIKE] Pike Co Census Books
    2. Just that quickly it has come to my attention that there is a 1850 census book published. Does anyone happen to have a copy that can give me author and publisher information this evening? If not, I will call the library (which I am told has a copy) and get the information from them tomorrow. Have a great evening, Barbara Freeman Pike Co ILGenWeb County Coordinator

    1. [ILPIKE] Stanley families
    2. I just found out that the father of Matilda Stanley, (b. abt 1808 in MO, m. Peter Saxberry Jun 17, 1827 Pike Co IL, d. Dec 23 1879 Pike Co IL) was most likely James Stanley from around the St Louis area. Is anyone familiar with the family of James Stanley or have any further information on him? Have a great weekend, Barbara Freeman http://members.aol.com/saxbury

    2. I just spoke with Virginia and she said the only census transcribed was the 1880 census. She does have quite a few of the books available for sale and gave me permission to post to the list and web site (under Pike Co Books). 1. [ILPIKE] Harvey Surname
    2. Annette, Page 589 Benjamin Barney was born in Pike county, where Montezuma now stands, Feb. 1, 1825. His parents emigrated to this county from Ohio, in 1824. Being a pioneer, he knows all the hardships of pioneer life; as soon as he was large enough to ride on horseback he went to Frye's Mill on Big Blue, a distance of 12 miles, and nearly always had to remain all night to get his grinding done, and no place to sleep, except on the corn sack; he has had many exciting scenes in the chase, having killed deer, wolves and wild-cats. Dec. 21, 1845, he married Miss Caroline Harvey (no mistake - that is what it says) and they had 3 children, William A., James B. and alfred F. In 1852 Mr. Barney removed to Oregon with his family, where Mrs. Barney died the same year; in 1857 he returned to Pike county, where he married Cynthia H. Mays, and their 8 children are Andrew J., dec., John W., Henry L., Laura E., Marion, Robert A., Artilla D and Minnie. Mr. B is engaged in farming and stock-raising on sec 26, this township. The bio. on page 590 concerning Francis Barney - he is the grandson of Benjamin, he is the son of Joseph W. I do not see a Joseph W in the list of children for Benjamin, but I do see a John W - could be???? It tells a bit about Benjamin so I will add it. Francis M. Barney, a native of Pike county, was born May 12, 1837, and is a son of Joseph W. Barney, dec., who came to this county in 1824. His grandfather, Benjamin B. Barney was one of the first pioneers of this county, and erected the first horse-mill in the county for grinding corn. This aged gentleman crossed the plains to California in 1849, being then in his 91st year, and arrived there in apparently good health, but died on ship-board while returning, in 1854. Our subject was raised on a farm and received a common school education; in 1866 he married Miss. S. A. Furry daughter of Christopher Furry, dec. They have had 5 children, 3 of whom are living, viz. Cora B., William R. and Edgar F. He has held the office of Town Clerk, and is at present the Police Magistrate for the village of Time. He served 3 years in Co. A. 20th reg. I.V. I., as a private in the late war, and was in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Siege of Vicksburg, Britton's Lane, Kenesaw Mountain, champion Hills, Raymond and others; he also participated in the Meridian raid, in which he came will-nigh being captured. He is a harness-maker by trade, but failing health required him to seek another vocation, he now keeps a grocery store in Time. Hope this helps you - good luck in your search. 1. [ILPIKE] Old Pike Co., IL Photos & Genealogies On-Line
    2. John Stewart
    3. Hi, Fellow Pike Co. (including old Scott & Morgan Co's), IL listers: I would like to announce that there are a few old photogaphs of people who used to live in Pike Co., IL, as well as several Pike Co. family genealogies, that are now on my web page. (see below) Sharon Wallace, a fellow researcher, discovered the old photos in her aunt's photo album. Unfortunately, many of the photos are not labeled or identified, although (fortunately) some are! In some cases the photos have only a location or date written on them. Some of them are dated as early as 1860. The Pike Co., IL families are too numerous to name here in full, but most are assocatied with the Draper, Sutphin, Edom, Penstone, & associated families from the Griggsville, Perry, Chambersburg, Pittsfield, Exeter, etc. areas. If you can see anyone that might be one of your relatives, drop me a line & tell me how you fit in. If you are a Pike Co., IL historian, maybe you can help us identify some of the places & people. Regards, Jack Stewart Grand Island, NE http://www.ginetworks.com/~johns2rt or http://www.ginetworks.com/~johns2rt/pikeco.html
