Your mention of Cannon and giving much more detail triggered my memory. There is a Cannon researcher living (as of last September) in Pittsfield at the campground in the summer and Florida in the Winter. This got me to thinking of the 1991 (that was before email) Pike and Calhoun County Gen Society members surname list. In it is a Donald Fahs (maybe you are one of them) that was researching a Leggett/Liggett along with Crim, Davis, Fahs, Gose, Leas, Pilcher, and Toner. Mr. Liggett is still listed in teldir.com. There are several researching Cannon in the list. I used this list to find Wilson connections by writing a mass of letters. One produced the results I wanted. The results were that I found out there were a lot of Wilson's in Pike County that I had not discovered. Eventually this connection got me in touch with another Wilson researcher that did not know anything about Wilson's in Pike County, but did fill me in with the Philadelphia Wilson's that I previously knew were there and could not find. He also told me where my McAllister's were from in Ireland. Together, with the help of a Pike County researcher we have discovered a lot of the Wilson heritage. I wish the Gen Soc was still active and that the list was updated with email addresses. I found that as of three years ago over half of the Wilson researchers (there was a lot of them) in the list had no phone listings. I still use the list, but with diminishing returns. Does anyone have an updated list? ----- Original Message ----- From: <RML11952@aol.com> To: <ILPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2000 4:42 PM Subject: Re: [ILPIKE] Leggett-notes > Sharon, > Your typing is wonderful, per my earlier reply, let me go further in > speculation. This note was in my files, of course I failed to note the source. I think it was from a little booklet on the History of Barry IL, I have it, but of course I can't find it. Still searching.--------- Alinza (Alzina) Leggett, sister of Sarah M. Leggett married George Wike (his 3rd marriage and her second). He was one of the owners of the Woolen Mills west of Barry at some springs now known as the Factory Springs. Their home was near the factory and they were buried in a stone tomb on the bluff overlooking their home and factory. Later due to mulilations done by the curious they had to be moved to the "old" cemetary in Barry. note for "Norm" --have seen your posts on the net, thanks for your help on the Leggett line, hope we can find some more leads. Sharon K
Sharon, Your typing is wonderful, per my earlier reply, let me go further in speculation. My gg-grandfather John Washington LEGGETT was born circa 1830 (unknown) and married Louisa Marion CANNON (3-81839-8-23-1908; according to the LDS site from Benton County, Alabama) on 1-21-1855. John and Louisa had one child (known) George Washington LEGGETT, born August 18. 1856 (my great grandfather). John Washington LEGGETT, died September 30th, 1856, for reasons unknown and about 6 week after his son was born. John Washington LEGGETT is buried in the HOLLIS cemetery south of NEBO in Pike County, also Louisa who died 52 years later is buried there. \\ Now this is truly speculation with no authentic facts, In your last posting you mentioned David HOLLIS according to web information I have recieved David HOLLIS was married to a Carolyn LEGGETT, and they had a minor Emeline LEGGETT living in the same household. On the adjacent (next) farm in Pike County owned by James Scranton there was a Washington (John?) Leggett living and working as a laborer. I have always speculated with no proof that this was family????? It is interesting that after John Washington LEGGETT died in 1856, That Louisa Marion CANNON LEGGETT, then remarried to a David SCRANTON and had 9 more children, yet was buried near John Washington LEGGETT in the HOLLIS cemetery, 52 years later. It certainly is a puzzle, with not a lot of documentation to confirm any speculation or substantiating facts. I am so glad to see another LEGGETT researcher on this site. The Pike County site has the most dedicated people and nicest bunch of volunteers of all the sites, I have ever been to. I bet we can find a connection. Gerald N. Norm LEGGETT
Sharon, Please be so kind as to send me any information you may obtain or have. My gg=grandfather John Washington LEGGETT born 1830 unknown and died in 1856 (Pike County, Illinois) is a dead end with my tree. I am looking for any possible links or leads. \\ Thanks for sharing, Gerald N. "Norm" Leggett
Betty Thanks, It could be them. Are the cemetery records on line? Sharon
