Morning all - I am heading for Pike County the first of May. Want to read old newspapers, along with visiting with as many of you locals as I can. I know they are at the Illinois library on microfilm and I know Glenda has done some to the newspaper abstract site - however I was wondering if any of the local historical societies had any or any of the libraries. I plan on visiting the society in Pittsfield - but see a couple more. All they show are PO Box numbers, does anyone know exactly where they are and who would be a contact person for them. I have a horrible copy of an obit from the Pike County Democrat on Thursday Sept. 11, 1890 for my ggggrandmother, Nancy English Shinn. Would like a better copy. Plus would like to see if I can find any other obits. Dorothy
Hello everyone, I am searching for information regarding my ggg grandparents who lived in Pittsfield for ten years on their way west. Joel HARVEY, wife Lydia and their children resided in Pike county approximately from 1836 until 1846, during which time at least one of their children, Lewellyn was born, and another was married (Rawson Augustus) to Keterah Jane CHENEY in Cheney's Grove. They appear on the 1840 Pike Co. Census. I'm hoping to obtain any documents/information about their activivties during these years. Any tips would be appreciated. Would ILL Vital Records be my best bet? Many thanks, Deneane Glazier-Ashcraft Cottonwood, CA

So far I have 32 yes and 0 no so the gateway has been opened. From this point on any post made to the Pike Co Queries GenConnect board will also be sent to the ILPIKE mail list. The from address on these posts will be the email address of the individual posting the query and not necessarily a member of the list. For that reason, it was necessary for me to switch the automatic reply line - from replies being returned to the list - to replies now go directly to the individual poster. If you want a reply to go to the list you will need to specify 'reply-all' in your email program. While I liked the reply to the list feature, I feel it is a fair trade. Also, to all those who were subscribed at the Pike Co Query Board to receive notification of the posts, I have removed your personal email address from the notification list. By doing this, you will only receive one notice thru the ILPIKE list of each new post instead of one thru the list and one individually. I do hope this was alright with the few this affected. Have a wonderful weekend, Barbara Freeman Pike Co ILGenWeb CC

When I took over management of this list I set the Pike Co GenConnect Board to notify the list each time a post was made so listmembers could see the queries on the GenConnect board as they were posted. I then got numerous complaints because the message was written in such a way that some subscribers thought they could unsubscribe from those particular posts when in actuality they could not because it was coming thru the ILPIKE mail list. Several days after I cancelled the GenConnect board posts, Rootsweb announced a new 'gateway' to would send these query posts to the mail list. In my opinion, the new 'gateway' would benefit listmembers by possibly providing more contacts. Now I just need to know what the majority of listmembers would prefer. Do you want these posts (examples of old and new below) to come thru the list? I will tally your responses tomorrow evening and will go with the majority. >From Past & Present of Pike Co IL: George W. Leggett, living on section l7 of Spring Creek township, is a progressive farmer, who place of one hundred and twenty acres is neat and well improved. It was upon this farm that he first opened his eyes to the light of day on the 4th of January l856. His father, John W. Leggett came from southeastern Missouri to Pike County and died when his son George was only about a year old. John W. Leggett was married to Louisa Cannon, a native of Alabama, in l855. She survives her husband and yet makes her home in this county, having since the death of Mr. Leggett, become the wife of David Scranton. George W. Leggett was the only child of his mother's first marriage and was reared to manhood in Spring Creek township, assisting his mother in his early boyhood days and afterward aiding his stepfather to carry on the work of the home farm. He enjoyed fair school privileges in the district schools, and at the age of nineteen years he started out in life on his own account, wince which time his labors have been the source of all the prosperity that has come to him. He was first employed by the month at farm labor for a year, at the end of which time he invested his earnings in forty acres of land on section l8 Spring Creek township, where he resided for two years. He then sold that property, after which he again rented a farm for three or four years and then bought one hundred and twenty acres on section of the same township. A number of years later he traded that property for forty acres, where he now resides, on section l7 Spring Creek township, and as his financial resources have increased he has extended the boundaries of his place from time to time, adding on two different occasions forty-acre tracts, so that he now has a good property of one hundred and twenty acres. He has erected an attractive two story frame residence and good outbuildings upon his place, has also planted an orchard, and has considerable small fruit. On the llth of April, l877, Mr. Leggett was united in marriage to Miss Alice Burbridge, a native of pike county, and a daughter of George W. Burbridge who was born in Bath County, Kentucky in l822, while his wife, who in her maidenhood was Nancy E. Ben was also a native of the Blue Grass State. Mr. Burbridge , on leaving Kentucky, became a resident of Pike County, Missouri, and subsequently he purchased land and settled in Pike County, Illinois taking up his abode here in l842 and continuing a resident of this county up to the time of his death...Unto Mr. and Mrs. Leggett have been born eight children, of whom two died in infancy. The others are Lillie Florean, Louisa Elizabeth, Bessie, John W. Dovie Edith and Logan. Mrs. Leggett is a member of the Christian Church of Independence. Mr. Leggett belongs to the Modern Woodmen camp at Nebo; and in politics he has always been a supporter of the men who are pledged to uphold republican principals. He and his estimable wife have labored together since the time of their marriage and have now a neat and comfortable home in Spring Creek township Me. Leggett being numbered among the enterprising farmers of the community. His life record proves what maybe accomplished by determined purpose, self reliance and laudable ambition, for these have been the strong and salient elements in his life work.
Nancy In all our prior discussions about Winners and their being in Hooper Colorado, you mentioned Edna Barnes and not Nathan Barnes. I have a Nathan Barnes that married Lydia Huff and had John Barnes who married Effie McKinney etc and later in this line another Nathan shows up who died in maybe 1979. This McKinney line is different than the one that had the Edna I believe. Is this the one you are interested in? If so, I will send a attachment of the tree to you. I really have to plead dumb - I was surprised and sorry to learn there was so much controversary over what I thought was a common goal of everyone concerned: Just make all the census material easily available to all researchers. I personally feel a great allegiance to Connie for all of the wonderful help she has given me. I was surprised to learn that I was signed up to transcribe the Illinois Pike County 1860 census for both sides of the fence. As someone said before, I am willing for anyone and everyone to have the material I transcribe, but if I have to choose, I will stay with Connie. Naomi A. Wood
I've got WADDLEs that are from the Ironton OH / Russel KY / Huntington WV area and then proceeding back to Floyd Co KY and from there back into VA. WEDDLE might be a phoenetic pronunciation since WADDLE/WADDELL/WADEL is a somewhat major Scottish Clan. My grandmother was named Wilda Waddle.
