I removed the forwarding to clean this up a bit. I don't normally send forwarded messages to my lists unless of course I feel the message is worthy. As most all of us are family historians I felt this deserved to get some attention! Please, simply delete if you feel that this is an intrusion....Melody In a message dated 4/17/00 22:43:19, jld4321@juno.com writes: << This is a email from a friend of mine that Portrays General Robert E. Lee's Boyhood Home was CLOSED to the public after 30 years as a museum. The Lee-Jackson Foundation SOLD it to a multimillionaire couple as their private home, NOT open to the public. The sale was totally secret until it was a "done deal".The house was never publicly on the market, and the millionaire buyerasked the Foundation to keep the sale confidential. The purpose of this website is to spread the word about this heritage outrage and mobilize support to maintain the museum for the public. The obit from the Pike County Express said that "memorials are suggested to the Deeder-Curfman Cemetery near Fishhook. My paternal relatives are DEEDER (Deeter). Does anyone have a listing of the peope buried in the Deeder-Curfman Cemetery and the pertinent dates on the tombstones? My ggg-grandparents were Deeder (Deeter) and Curfman (Kurfman)and some of their descendents are probably buried in that cemetery.
I forgot to add, I will be reading the film at my local library on Friday, April 28, that is the deadline. Rick
I have ordered the Pike County, IL census for 1860. I expect to have the microfilm by mid-week next week. I do not have an index for the census. If anyone has a surname and a page number, I will be glad to do a look-up. Rick Monroe
Does anyone know if an index exists for the 1865 IL State Census, specifically for Pike County? Rick Monroe Long Beach, CA
Thanks to all those whose so promptly replied to my request about the location of the Holford Cemetery. You have all been very helpful. I'll have my father-in-law take me to that location and see if we can find it. He was born and still resides near Nebo. Judy from Tulsa.
Bill- I am a descendent of Nathaniel Bagby, Holford's neighbors. I am not a Holford relative, that I know of. But, you must have read the section in Pike County History by Chas. C. Chapman about Hardin Twsp. pg 586. "The first pilgrams in Hardin were Benjamin Barney, Nathaniel Bagby, Solomon Main, Jacob Henry, Joseph Halford, Jesse Mason and Aaron Thornton. The first couple united in marriage in the township were Nathaniel Thornton and Lucinda Bagby". Is this a misspelling/misprinting in the Pike History as Halford? Should it have really been Holford? Or, is it a different family altogether? FYI - The Bagby's lived just across the field from Holfords, as the crow flies. Bagby's owned farms in sections 8 & 9 of Hardin. The Holford Cemetery is in the center of section 15 of Hardin township. There is no road to it, however, about 5 years ago I drove my truck to within 100 yars or so of the cemetery on a farm lane. On the East side of section 15 is the road which runs south from the town of Time. The farm lane began at that road and ran due West toward the middle of section 15. The cemetery was surrounded by large trees and the few remaining tombstones are there. Isaac Holford's tombstone is a large flat stone. The incription was clear. The stone was leaning against a tree. When Isaac died in 1854 he lived very near this cemetery. He had 40 acres which became the farm of his son Joseph. The 40 acres were the NE quarter of the SW Quarter of Section 15. When I was a teenager in the mid or late 1950's my father and I went squirell hunting in the Holford cemetery. There were several more tomestones there at that time than five years ago. I would love to exchange information with anyone interested in Isaac Holford, his wives and their children. Isaac and Mary Holford were my gt-gt-gt-gt-gt-grandparents.
