    3. Sounds like the terrorist are our elected and/or appointed officials. This is an election year. Time to get out those "DON'T REELECT NOBODY" bumper stickers Senaca County Advertiser - Tribune Wednesday, January 28, 2004 Time: 12:01:51 AM EST Terrorism concerns put crimp on records Big Brother may not be watching you - but he's going to make it difficult for you to peek into the lives of your ancestors if they happened to be Ohioans. Access to documents such as birth and death records is being restricted by Buckeye State officials who claim they are acting against terrorists and other criminals. And, by the way, it is going to become much more expensive for you to obtain copies of such records. It is an open records issue not likely to be taken on by the press - reporters are more interested in how much money your county commissioners spent on travel last year than on learning the names of their great-great-grandparents - but it is, nevertheless, unacceptable. Officials say easy access to old records makes it easier for identity theft criminals to operate. And, they say, it helps terrorists establish false identities. Perhaps so, but those bent on obtaining the information they need for such misdeeds won't even be slowed down by the new rules. They will find other ways to get the information. Historians and genealogists, most of them amateurs who just want to know more about their ancestors, will be handicapped severely, however. Some simply will not be able to afford the new fees state officials say will be imposed. According to one news story on the changes, "photocopies that once cost as little as 25 cents per page must now be obtained by formal request at $15 or more per page." It gets worse: The state Department of Health is considering whether to confiscate some collections of records held by libraries, historical societies and genealogy groups. It all is an unnecessary restriction of the rights of Ohioans to learn about their own history, sometimes their own families - and they shouldn't stand for it.

    1. [ILPIKE] Hunting Accident Martin Kinman - Elisha Kinman
    2. Anyone on list who has checked some of the old newspaper accounts remember seeing anything about a hunting accident where Martin Kinman accident shot and killed his half brother Elisha Kinman? This would have been after the Civil War. I would think between 1865 - 1870. In the 1860 Census Elisha B Kinman and family listed as living in Fairmount Twp. This is information that I received from descend of Martin in Oregan. I ask to confirm and his family told me that sometime he with them and sometime off somewhere on his own, but they will listen if he every brings it up again. My Great Grandfather George Allen Kinman, Elisha son was in Grayson Co, Texas by 1875 and Martin was there by 1883 before going to Oregon. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Leroy Gailey Paint Rock, Texas

    1. [ILPIKE] Lookup: Probate/Estate of Sarah (Baccus) Snider/Snyder, 1851
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Snider, Snyder, Ridgway, Ridgeway, Baccus, Backus, Meyer Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kg.2ADI/1500 Message Board Post: Several of us are researching the family of William Snider/Snyder and Sarah Baccus/Backus/Bechues who were married 5 Feb 1801, presumably in Fayette County, Pennsylvania or possibly in Loudoun County, Virginia. Sarah is known to be the daughter of John Baccus and Catherine Franks. William died 1825 in Ross County, Ohio, where Sarah was stil living in 1840. However the 1850 Census shows her living in Pike County, Illinois with a daughter. I descend from a John Snider/Snyder who died about 1842 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana and was married to Rachel Ridgway. William's 1825 probate shows a son named John. As my John predeceased Sarah (Baccus) Snider/Snyder, I am hoping that she left a probate record which will name his children as heirs. Children of Sarah (Baccus) Snider/Snyder: John, born about 1801 Jacob James, born 1805 Catherine ("Kitty"), married a Hornback Sarah ("Sally"), married a Hull Nancy Henry William Mary (not mentioned by name in William the father's will) My John Snider/Snyder's children: Margaret, born about 1829 Sarah, born 1830 William, born 1833 James, born 1836 Nancy (my ancestor), born 13 Oct 1837 Henry Wallace, born about 1840-1 John, born about 1841-2 (last guardian relieved from duty in 1862, when this John reached his majority). Sarah (Snider/Snyder) born 1830, John's daughter, married Henry Meyer (Myers, etc.) in 1849 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. If she were mentioned in the probate of Sarah (Baccus) Snider/Snyder, it would probably be under her married surname. My John's estate record (he died intestate) gives a tantalizing but brief reference to "Sarah Snider's estate." We think this may mean the estate of Sarah (Baccus) Snider/Snyder. The two spellings, Snider and Snyder, were used interchangeably in my John's estate record and in many other records. It is believed that the name may have originally been Schneider, as in one branch of the family there is a tradition that our progenitors came from Germany. The possible cousins with whom I am in touch are researching other descents from Sarah (Baccus) Snider/Snyder, so if anyone could look this up and you actually find the record, please let me know what is in it and how much it would cost to copy and mail the pertinent portions. Even if it doesn't name my John's children, it will be valuable to others. Thanks! Alma Robertson
