    3. Good job! Although I research none of the people mentioned, I enjoyed reading about Anna. The writer gave us a vivid picture of her life in the context of her time as well as recording the basic facts and where the information was found. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kg.2ADI/1521 Message Board Post: Anna Elizabeth Cooper Townsend 1846-1912 Anna was the oldest daughter among the ten children of Isaiah Cooper, Junior, [1817-1895] and his wife, Elizabeth Sigsworth Cooper [1824-1884]. She was born in Pike County, Illinois, on 3 February 1846, the year her Cooper grandfather and the families of his four sons sold out their land and belongings in Illinois and crossed the plains to settle in what was to become Yamhill County, Oregon. Anna was a suckling baby during this crossing. During February of 1847 her parents settled on a square mile of land on the southern bank of the Yamhill River at its confluence with the Willamette River. Anna was one year old the month her father registered the land claim at Oregon City. Events during Anna’s infancy were dramatic. First the crossing of the plains and the settlement on the new land. Then Oregon was convulsed by the Whitman Massacre and the resulting Cayuse War. No sooner had that been settled when gold was discovered in California, draining the Oregon Territory of its population. Anna’s father went to California in 1848, and the family was taken down to California in 1849. An epidemic of “camp fever” killed several in the family, including Anna’s grandfather, Isaiah Cooper, Senior. Her parents were disillusioned with both Oregon and California and did not return to their land claim in Oregon. Instead they left California in 1850 and returned to Pike County, Illinois, where Anna grew to young womanhood. In 1867 the family left Illinois and settled in Cherokee County in the new state of Kansas. It was there that Anna met Benjamin F. Townsend, who was eleven years her senior. They were married in 1870 when he was thirty-five and she, twenty-four. Soon afterward the Townsends emigrated to Southern California. We know that they were living in San Bernardino in 1874 because their daughter Mabel T. Townsend was born there that year. A son, Ernest F. Townsend, was born in California 23 July 1878. There were no other children born to Anna according to the 1910 Census. In the 1890 Great Register of Voters of Orange County, CA, the family was living in Garden Grove. In the 1900 Census, the family lived at 1108 West 5th Street in Santa Ana, Orange County, CA. Their son Ernest had already left home by that time, but their unmarried daughter Mabel, 25, was still living at home. Anna was to live the rest of her life in Santa Ana. Mabel Townsend married Jo Lowell [10 May 1872-] on 18 November 1903 in Santa Ana. They had two children. In the 1910 Census, one of Mabel’s children was living with her parents. He was Kenneth Townsend Lowell [10 Sept. 1904-23 January 1985]. Mabel and Jo cannot be found in the 1910 Census in Orange County. Anna and Benjamin were living with their grandson Kenneth in Santa Ana. Anna Cooper Townsend died 25 January 1912, at the age of sixty-five in Santa Ana. Benjamin survived her. Presumably Anna was buried in Santa Ana. It is unknown if Anna’s son Ernest ever married. In 1936 he was living with his invalid uncle, William Shepherd Cooper at 1942 North Alvarado Street in Orange, California. The home belonged to the uncle. It is possible that Ernest could have been living with a family of his own at his uncle’s home, but this would require further investigation. The uncle died childless in 1936. Ernest died 8 March 1944 in Orange at the age of sixty-five. Anna’s daughter Mabel was to have other children. A daughter, Charlene E. Lowell Bowker, was born 16 October 1913, in Orange County, CA, and was living in San Diego, CA, in 1985. A daughter, Virginia Lowell Dickson, was born 15 October 1908 in Orange County, CA, and died 22 July 1986 in Riverside County, CA. Kenneth T. Lowell died in 1985 in Kirkland, King County, WA, at the age of eighty. Kenneth left surviving children James Edmund Lowell, living in Seattle in 1985, and Marilyn Rae Lowell Kalar, living in Houston, TX, in 1985. ==== ILPIKE Mailing List ==== Pike Co Cemeteries http://www.PikeCoILGenWeb.org/cemeteries.html

    1. [ILPIKE] Isaiah Cooper Jr. 1817-1895
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kg.2ADI/1520 Message Board Post: Isaiah Cooper Junior Obituary 1817-1895 [From the Baxter Springs, Kansas, newspaper] Died, at the home of his son, J. M. Cooper, in this city on Friday, February 8, 1895, at 7 o'clock p.m., Isaiah Cooper, aged seventy-seven years, seven months, and twenty-one days. Mr. Cooper had been ill ten weeks during which time he suffered intensely, but as the end drew near, his sufferings ceased and he passed away calmly. Deceased was born in Indiana on June 18, 1817. When ten years old, he moved with his parents to Pike county, Illinois, where he lived for forty years. In 1849, however, he went across the plains to California with an ox team. [It was 1846]. After remaining in California two years and nine months, he returned to Illinois, where he lived until 1867, when he moved to Cherokee county, Kansas and resided in this city and on his farm near here ever since. [This leaves out his two years in Oregon.] He was married to Elizabeth Sigsworth in Pike county, Illinois, in 1840. His wife died eleven years ago. Mr. Cooper enlisted in the rebellion on May 10, 1862, and was made captain of Company K, 99th Illinois Infantry. He suffered the loss of his right arm at Black creek [Big Black River] in the rear of Vicksburg during the battle of the latter place and was discharged for wounds on March 20, 1864. He was a charter member of Baxter Lodge No. 71, A. F. and A. M. [Masons] and remained in good standing up to the time of his death. He joined Baxter Post No. 123 G. A. R. on March 4, 1887. [The Grand Army of the Republic, G. A. R., was an organization of former Union soldiers that ceased to exist in 1959 with the death of the last Union soldier.] During all the years of his life Mr. Cooper was a conscientious follower of the golden rule, doing nothing except what he knew to be right, and his friends were legion. Mr. Cooper was the father of ten children, all of whom are living, six of them being present at the time of his death. Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 10, at l o'clock and were conducted by Baxter Post No. 123, G. A. R. After a short ceremony at the residence on East River street, the remains were taken to the First Methodist Episcopal church, where a beautiful and touching sermon was delivered by Rev. M. E. Bramhall, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church of McCune. The large edifice was crowded to standing room. After Rev. Bramhall had concluded his remarks, Baxter Post No. 123, G. A. R., paid its respect to the deceased according to the ritual of the order and was followed by Baxter Lodge, No. 71, A. F. and A. M., which also performed the ritualistic ceremony of the order. The procession was then formed and notwithstanding the extremely cold weather a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives followed the remains to their last resting place in the city cemetery. Arriving at the cemetery, the Masons concluded the services. The bereaved members of the family have the sympathy of all. This Willam is the son William and Rachel Sawyers; the son of Alexander and Mary McPheeters Crawford. The sisters married brothers. Rhoda married John Gibson and Martha married Felix. The brothers are descendants of Alexander and Mary McPheeters Crawford.

I would love to get everything I can from you about Sarah Elizabeth and her descendents. Of course, anything about George W. and Narcissus would be greatly appreciated. I have them producing 2 children, Sarah and William J. Kindle. William J. married "Etta" and they William P. Kindle and Hazel M. Kindle. William P. married Bernice R. and they had Richard R. Kindle. I'm not 100% on this. I found them in the 1920 and 1930 census living in St. Paul MN. Narcissus and Edmond Mattox (I think. It could be Maddox though.) had 5 children. Edmond G. b. nov-1968 d. 1939, Rosa b. Mar-1870, Mary Etta (My GGrandmother) b. 1872 d. 28-Mar-1893, Johanna b. Mar-1875 d. 1958, and Ardelia b. 1878. Since Mary died so young Lucy Ardelia Nida, my grandmother was raised by her grandmother, Narcissus and my understanding is that her aunt Sarah was also very close to her. They did all head to St. Louis around 1900. Narcissus is buried in Big River Cemetery, Washington County, MO. I've got quite a bit more. I'll send the photo attached to an email that I will send directly to you. I hope to hear from you soon.
