Surnames: Burns, Dixon, O'Neal Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kg.2ADI/1507.1 Message Board Post: Hi Heather, Perhaps this will be a helpful lead. In researching my O'Neal's, I found in the 1883 HISTORY OF PIKE COUNTY (Missouri) that James O'Neal, James and Arthur Burns arrived in 1809 from Kentucky. If you did not know, Pike Co MO and Pike Co IL are across the river from each other. Their historys are closely linked because most of the early settlers to Pike Co., IL stopped in Pike Co., MO first. The reason for this was slavery. Illinois was a free state and most southerns migrated to Missouri first. To continue with the Burns, it says that James Burns had been in the area as early as 1800. In 1802, his brother-in-law Frederick Dixon, a celebrated hunter and Indian trader, applied and received a grant of 680 acres from the Governor of Upper Louisiana. Apparently James Burns did not become a permanent settler in the region until 1809 when he brought his family and his brothers in from Kentucky. By the way, my James O'Neal lost his wife, all nine children and a foster child (orphan) in an Indian massacre about 1812. However, other of his kinsman arrived from Kentucky to Pike Co., MO, to Pike Co., IL. Good hunting, Judy

He had a sister who lived in Illinois. His wife, Barbara Garey Wilson Tittsworth had no children (that I'm aware) with Joseph. She previously had several. She died in Lucas county living near a son named William Wilson. I am trying to search for Joseph's sister to try and make out who he was. Haven't found much more than his will - doesn't give who his parents were. The Library there burned in the 1910-1920 and destroyed alot of the early history for the county. Luckily the Court House still has their records!

Original message: [ILADAMS] CASE SENSITIVITY OF SEARCHES AT ANCESTRY 3/10/04 Just to let you know that I've discovered a problem relating to case sensitivity when doing searches on this board. It could related to all boards, but I've only checked this one, since I was looking for information in here. If you are searching for a surname, do a search of mixed, upper and lower cases for the surname. You will NOT get the same results searching for Meyer as when you search for MEYER. I've reported this situation to Ancestry.com, since it has a serious effect on search results for those trying to find related messages. It's particularly odd to find a case sensitivity in a genealogy board, because it's very common in genealogy messages to UPPERCASE a surname, so it can be easily recognized by those scanning messages.

Marilyn - The only information I have on Benjamin Davis' wives is below. Is your side of the research on Frances or on Benjamin? Benjamin Barzillia[3] Davis, son of Isaac and Mercy Rogers Davis, was born August 29, 1813 in Canada; died May l9, 1879 while visiting relatives in Minnesota; married (1) Catherine Sally Philinda Pettis, daughter of Stephen and Sally Philinda Nichols Pettis. Catherine was born October 10, 1819, in Alburg Vt.; died June 5, 1852, in Pike County, Ill., and is buried in the Pettis Cemetery, one mile south of Newburg Corners, Pike County. Benjamin married (2) ----- ; married (3) -----. Benjamin remained on the home farm in Pike County, Ill. He attained national acclaim as a pomologist with the production of the "Ben Davis" apple. The source of my information on the death of Francis E. Davis was taken from the Pike County ILL Democrat newspaper abstract 1867. DIED In Newburg township on Saturday, Dec. 28th, 1867, Francis E., wife of Benjamin B. Davis, aged 39 years. Since Benjamin Davis is a common name, it is possible there was another Benjamin Davis in Pike County during the 1830's to 1870's. Benjamin Barzillia Davis was the son of Isaac Van Norman Davis who died in Pike Co. in 1851.

Sarah Baccus married William Snider/Snyder 5 Feb 1801, but we don't know where. Could have been Pennsylvania. But the birthplaces of their children indicate that they probably lived in an area of Pennsylvania that was claimed by Virginia, so who knows where the record might be. I am writing this first thing in the morning, without consulting my notes, so this may not be strictly accurate. Also, I have yet to establish my relationship to the Baccus line so have not done any major research on it. However there is a file at WorldConnect on descendants of Peter Bechues, and it is a large file. Perhaps you could find some clues there. Alma
