    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Collins Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kg.2ADI/1533 Message Board Post: Obituary from Pike County Democrat (Pittsfield, Pike County, IL); Thursday April 26, 1866: Died in Griggsville on Friday, the 20th, of typhoid fever, Capt. James A. Collins, aged about 64 years. The subject was one of the oldest and most respectable citizens of this county, having located here in 1833. The writer has enjoyed his acquaintance and friendship for a period of thirty years, and possessed opportunities which few others enjoyed, for gaining an insight into his inner life, and can truthfully say that no man was more tenacious in his adherence to the principles of truth and justice, than he. If any disliked him, it was because they did not know him, for he had only to be known and understood, to be liked. As a husband and father he was always kind and confiding. He leaves a wife and daughter to bear the crushing weight of this terrible affliction. PS: Griggsville Cemetery, Griggsville, Illinois: Capt. James A. Collins 1 July 1800-20 Apr 1866; Jane (Stevens) Collins, wife, 4 Aug 1802-23 Jan. 1854. (I am not related to James Collins - only copied the obituary from the newspaper while researching my own line in Pike Co. - Gerri)

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kg.2ADI/1531 Message Board Post: An obituary from The Democrat (Pike Co. IL) Thurs. Jan. 27, 1870: Mrs. Lydia Ann Troy Mittower, wife of Dr. Mittower, fell asleep in Jesus Nov. 5, 1869, in Minton, Pike Co. Ills. For many years she was a faithful Christian, was a life member of the American Bible Society and for twenty years a reader of the Observer. The above clipped from the New York Observer, is but a faint tribute to the very excellent woman, whose decease is therein recorded. She was a daughter of Hon. Daniel Troy, formerly a member of the legislature from Morgan county in this state. She, however, was born in Sangamon county upon the farm on which the Rev. Peter Cartwright now resides, and which was purchased by the latter of her father. Her uncle, Charles Troy, was the first man that ever brought a plow to Pike county, having raised corn in the year 1816 on land now owned by Mr. George Henry and lying one mile north of Time. It will thus be such that she was one of the pioneers of our noble State, a class of persons on whom much honor is due for the dangers, t! oils and privations they underwent in opening up this fertile region for settlement. (Found this in the Pike Co. Illinois Cemetery book: French (Milton) Cemetery: Dr. Abram Mittower, d 1879 (65-2-18); Mrs. Lydia d. 1862??; Wm. Mittower - no dates). PS: I am not related to this person - just copied the obituary for someone, as I am researching my own line. Gerri

    1. Re: [ILPIKE] Mulherin Family
    2. Dorothy- My ggg-grandmother was Jane (Mulherin) Barton b. 16 Sep. 1801, Ruddells Station, Ky. d. 1866 Paynesville, Pike Co., MO. She m. Benjamin F. Barton 2 Aug. 1817, Adams, OH. They were early settlers in Pike/Lincoln Co Mo. They lived near the Pike/Lincoln Co line. Records sometimes recorded them in Pike and sometimes in Lincoln. The Barton family is the same that is later associated with Pike Co.,Ill. The rest of this note was information provided to me by others. I have not re-proved all of this information, but I have no reason to doubt it at this time. Grace Clark of Streator, Il told me in 1975 that Jane's father was John Mulherin & mother was Elizabeth Ruddell. Elizabeth was the sister of Rev. Stephen Ruddell, who along with Elizabeth and another child ,Amos, was captured by Shawnee indians at the Ruddells Station. Much of this is written about by Lymon Draper in the latter 1800s. The original Draper Manuscripts are at the Univ. of Wisconsin, but you should be able to search the internet for much if this information. Search for "Ruddell's Station". The Charles Mulherin you inquire about (1860 Pike Census) must be related to this family, because according to information provided to me by Frank Neher says John Mulherin's father was also a Charles Mulherin. It is likely that Charles (1860 census) was Jane's brother. John & Elizabeth Mulherin migrated to Pike Co., MO at the same time as their daughter Jane Barton. Here is the information provided to me by Frank Neher: John Mulherin b. 15 Jan 1758, Lancaster, PA m. 31 Jan 1789, Bourbon Co.,KY; d. 20 Feb 1850 Paynesville, Pike Co.,MO. Elizabeth (Ruddell) Mulherin b. 26 Aug 1776, Virginia; d. 25 Oct 1854, Clarksville,Pike,MO. John's father: Charles Mulherin Jr. b. abt 1743, Ireland d. 7 Mar 1789, Abbeville, SC. wife unknown. Charles' father: Charles Mulherin Sr. b. abt 1710, Ireland d. bef. 1789, Abbeville, SC. I would be glad to provide additional information if I can. Sincerely, Greg Sippel Overland Park, Kansas
