Little Harold was a bright and cheerful little child and had entwined his love around the hearts of his parents so that his early death makes their sorrow almost too much to bear, but they humbly bow to the divine will and purpose and meekly say "Thy will, and not ours, be done." The funeral services were conducted from the home Wednesday, at 10 am by W. M. Halley. A large congregation of friends and neighbors were present and deeply sympathized with these young people in their sorrow. Burial was made in Philadelphia cemetery."

Blake was born the 17th day of January, in the year 1840, in Erie, Penn., and departed this life Thursday evening, October 3, 1901, at his home near Barry, Ill., aged 61 years, 8 months and 16 days. In early manhood he volunteered his services in defence of the Union, enlisting in Company F., 137th regiment volunteer infantry. In 1872 he was married to Miss Sarah Ripley, of Meredosia, Ill., and to this union three sons were born, two of whom survive; also the wife, mother, three brothers and a host of relatives. On various occasions he gave evidence of his belief in God and trusted Him as the righteous judge. In all his dealings with his fellowmen he was honest and upright; as a soldier he was proud of his record of service; as a citizen he was loyal to his country and the flag he loved. Funeral services were conducted at his late residence Saturday afternoon, October 5, by F.M. Rogers, pastor of the Christian church, and the last rites were performed at the grave by the G.A.R. Post."

October 10, 1901: "Richard St. John was born in Albany county, New York, December 27, 1822, and departed this life in Barry, Ill., October 2, 1901, aged 79 years, 10 months and 8 days. His father moved from New York state to Looking Glass Prairie, St. Clare county, Ill., in 1833, and in 1837 removed to Pittsfield, Ill. Mr. St. John came to Barry, Ill., in 1842 and has resided here ever since, with the exception that from 1849 to 1851 he crossed the plains to California and return. He was a blacksmith by trade and followed the same as an occupation for thirty-five years in and near Barry. He was married twice, and of the first union five sons and one daughter were born - William, Edward, Alva, Rollie and George; the daughter is now Mrs. Frances Devol, of Grand Bay, Alabama, and all the children are living to mourn his loss. Death removed this partner of his joys, and he was married a second time to Mary L. Lippincott December 20, 1862, who still survives. Mr. St. John served as city marshal of Barry for fourteen consecutive years with honor to himself and profit to the city. He was supposed to be at the time of his death the oldest Mason in Pike county. He took great interest in Masonry and its teachings and tried to exemplify its precepts in his life. He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be sadly missed in his home and community. The funeral services were conducted from the M.E. church Sunday, October 6, at 2 pm, by Wm. M. Halley, after which his Masonic brethren took charge and buried him with Masonic honors in Barry cemetery."
The marriages you asked about are still in the Court House. I do not know why they don't have them in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index. I don't know if you can get into this in the Pike County Court House or not. You might give it a try. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2004 11:23 AM Subject: [ILPIKE] Illinois Statewide Marriage Index for Pike County > The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index has online Pike County marriages > from 1827-1859 1878-1896. March 19, 1903, p1: "Drowned in Oklahoma, L.H. Hunt Meets His Death in a Flood. Information has been received that L.C. Hunt, living near Ponca, Okla., was drowned during a heavy rainstorm. It appears that a creek near his home went out of its banks, and in trying to save some little pigs he was overwhelmed by the current. The accident occurred on March 7, about 11 o'clock at night, and when he failed to return, his wife went out to learn what had become of him and found everything under water. By following a wire fence she succeeded in reaching the house of a neighbor some distance away. The following morning the body of her husband was found only a short distance from the house. Several years ago Mr. Hunt was a music dealer in Springfield, Ill., and was known by many here. His wife is a sister of Mrs. Angie Lyons, of this city." Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kg.2ADI/1553 Message Board Post: Barry Adage Newspaper, Barry, Pike, IL, Friday, Feb. 4, 1881, A sad and most thrilling accident occurred to Rooble B. Hoyt, a fourteen- year- old son of Mr. James Hoyt, at the residence of Charley Lippincott last Sunday, resulting in his death. The boy, after attending Sunday School at the M.E. church, accompanied his borthers to visit their aunt, Mrs. Lippincott, and make inquiry about their grandmother, and while there engaged in play with the children. In amusing themselves the hay mow was resorted to and soon they began sliding down. By some means a pitchfork had been placed under the hay with the handle down, and while descending, Rooble was struck under the chin, one tine of the fork entering his head nearly if not fully eight inches and breaking off. Dr. McKinney was called and it was only with the greatest difficulty that the broken tine could be extracted. The poor boy suffered the operation without taking the slightest narcotic and bore up with great fortitude! during the excruciating pain of the few hours allotted to him thereafter. He died at noon on Monday and the funeral took place from the M.E. church at 2 pm. Tuesday, a large number of relatives and friends being present. Rooble is spoken of as an intelligent and well behaved boy, and to see him cut down just as he was entering a career of usefulness was a terrible blow to the bereaved parents, who have the sympathy of the entire community.

Aug 22, 1890, p5, col 4, "The telegraph had another sad surprise for our citizens, and especially for the relatives, in conveying the news of Floyd B. Gray's death at Ashland, Wis., Monday. His demise was caused by heart disease and was very sudden and unexpected. He was at a hotel at Ashland with his wife and child and was entertaining the little one when the attack came, and rising to his feet he walked to the bed and fell upon it a corpse. For several months he had been in ill health, yet his family and friends had no idea his end was so near nor that death would come in the manner it did. The remains, accompanied by the widow and child, arrived here on the cannon ball train Tuesday night, the funeral taking place from the residence of Mrs. S. Gray, mother of the deceased on Wed. at 2pm. Rev. T.G. McLean, assisted by Eld. H. C. Littleton, conducted the service. Thus closed the career of one of the brightest young men this city ever produc! ed. Thrown upon his own resources in his early youth, he developed a business faculty far in advance of his years, and his advancement from clerk in one of our grocery stores to that of one of the leading traveling salemen of the country was rapid and permanent. His last days were spent in the employ of Franklin, McVeigh & Co., a large Chicago grocery house, and at a salary such as comparatively few men receive. Floyd B. Gray was the son of Schuyler and Amanda Gray and was born in Barry nearly 31 years ago. He was married to Miss Gretta Kettering, daughter of Geo. Kettering, at Hannibal in 1887. He leaves a widow, a son two years old, mother, brothers and sisters in bereavement."

David and Charles married sisters, last name Pulliam. The cemetery was on the farm of David D. It is still owned by the family and has had two burials in the last couple of years. David left the farm to his daughter Malinda (Lindy) Hull Hinch. Aunt Lindy and Uncle Bill never had any children. Lindy and Bill raised a grand daughter of her brother, young Uncle Smith Hull named Josie Staggs. Lindy left the farm to Josie. Josie married Vanus Call. Their son, Russell just died last year. A son of Russell now lives in the big stone house built by David. Lindy wrote down all the family, who they married, etc. Copies have been made of her writtings and I have a copy. Andrew was a brother of Charles and David. Another brother was old Uncle Smith. Old Uncle Smith and Andrew married sisters. Smith married Elizabeth McAtee. Andrew married Sarah Ellen McAtee. The father of the McAtee girls was the first sheriff of Pike Co. Illinois. He was from Somersett, Kentucky. Andrew 1819-1888 went to California in the gold rush of 1849 and then to Oregon in 1853. He died in 1888 in Wasco Co., Oregon. I can not get my computer to load my genealogy program tonight.
