    1. A Riggs family site for Pike Co. and others.
    2. Ken Reeder
    3. Oh, if we could only find a few more researchers like David RIGGS, our work would be done. Because there was an influx of RIGGS into Pike, Adams and Brown Counties, IL, from places like Carter Co., KY, you may find something of interest in your surname. And you will notice that he uses a different genealogy program, one that allows notes and trees, to be attached. And as David says in the first line of his Home page - The purpose of this page is to facilitate discussion between those actively researching Rigg family history. I take that to mean that he will be glad to discuss any additions/correction that you may have to his data. http://www.number-one.org/~rigg/ghtindex.htm

    1. 100 1927 dollars
    2. Ken Reeder
    3. Recently on the [email protected] site, a newspaper clipping was included in a posting. I was curious to know how much a penalty a $100 fine would be. So I googled and hit a site that had an article that addressed the issue of 1927 money compare to 1998 money. $100 fine not exactly a slap on the wrist. In 1927 dollars, $100. would have been a bunch of money. Some of our relatives went to 'Detroit-City' to work in Henry Ford's factory for $1. a day (10 hour day). To read an article that "unofficially" compares 1927 prices to 1998 prices, click on http://www.jitterbuzz.com/costs.html Yeh, yeh, I know it isn't strictly genealogy, but it reflects our ancestors life experiences. ~~~~~~~~~ Linda shared: Athens Messenger (Athens, Ohio) 1927 July 26 REEDER IS FINED LOGAN, (Ohio) July 26 - A fine of $100 and costs was assessed against John Reeder in Common Pleas court Saturday when he appeared before Judge Harley M. Whitecraft on a charge of possession of intoxicating liquor. 3. I'm looking for the connection between REDDICK and McDOWELL families. Thomas W. REDDICK / REDICK b. 1810 in Hamilton Co. Ohio and he married Eliza Jane DeWITT in Schuyler Co. IL on March 30, 1831. They lived in Brown Co IL for several years, but eventually moved to Fish Hook, Pike County, Illinois on a farm. After the death of Thomas & Eliza, a family of McDOWELL became owners of the farm. I was told that Lillian REDDICK McDOWELL was a half sister to a REDDICK and she was one of the McDOWELL's living on the farm. Lillian was supposedly around 95 years old when she died, which was about 1965 or so. I know nothing more about Lillian. Does any one? Thomas and Eliza were buried on the farm land. I'm trying to learn their death date's. Judi

Surnames: Wike, Hailey, Smith, Fuller, Brookins, Grubb Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kg.2ADI/1769 Message Board Post: Barry Adage, Barry, Pike Co. IL, Thursday, Jan. 24, 1901, p1: "Hon. Scott Wike at Rest. His Remains Buried in Park Lawn Cemetery. The funeral of the late Hon. Scott Wike took place on Friday afternoon, and a large number of our citizens turned out to pay the last tribute of respect to a man who was honored by all. Pittsfield, where deceased lived many years, sent over a large delegation of prominent citizens, and consequently the services at the house and in the cemetery were largely attended. At the house Rev. W.M. Hailey, of the M.E. church, conducted the services which were brief but very impressive. There were present the members of the Pike County Bar association and all the people of the surrounding country, many of whom had known the Hon. Scott Wike since he was a boy working in his father's woolen mill. Only the Knights Templar selected to act as pallbearers went to the house, which is located some distance west of town, the other members of the commandery remaining at Masonic Temple until the funeral procession was coming toward town. They met it near the residence of Mr. Eugene Smith and led it to the cemetery. Among those who attended the funeral were the following relatives from a distance: Mr. George Wike, of Moberly, Mo.; Perry Fuller and wife, of Dixon, Ill.; Mr. Brookins and wife, of Moberly, Mo.; George Grubb and wife of Liberty, and Prof. Grubb, of Galesburg."

Wike, near the city of Barry, in said Pike county, as a token of regard for her long and faithful services to Mrs. A.C. Wike and her family, as a member of the same, the sum of five hundred dollars ($500). My dear stepmother, Mrs. A.C. All the above and foregoing legacies to be paid out of the first moneys coming into the hands of my executors. The rest and residue of all my property, both real and personal, of every kind and character whatsoever, or wheresoever located, it is my will and desire shall descend to and vest in my next of kin, my brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, and be distributed among them according to the law of the state of Illinois relating to inheritances descents and distribution, the same as though this will had not been written or executed, i.e. said residue to descend and be distributed as intestate estate. IL, Fri., Aug. 1, 1890: "John McClerey was born in Washington county, West Virginia, May 8, 1831, and died at his home near Hadley Station, Pike county, Illinois, July 22, 1890, aged 59 years, 2 months and 14 days. At the age of five years he came with his parents to this country (county?), and in 1852 was married to Hannah Ellen Farmer. Eight children were the fruit of their marriage, six children, a wife, sisters and one brother remain to mourn their loss. His death was very sudden and a great shock to all. He had been quite ill, but the physician had pronounced him out of danger and he seemed nearly in his usual health, was lively and in good spirits, but a few minutes before his death, had walked about the yards and told his daughter what he would like for supper. When entering the room a few moments later, she found him gasping for breath and almost instantly he was gone. In 1868 he obeyed the call of the gospel and united with the M.E. church at Pleasant Hill, and remained a worthy and ! consistent member until death. He was an industrious, frugal and exemplary citizen, a kind friend and neighbor and a loving and devoted husband and father, and not only will he be missed in the home made vacant by his death, but in the vicinity where he has so long resided. The funeral services were held at the family residence and were conducted by Rev. Calhoun, of Pittsfield, and the remains laid to rest in the Baylis cemetery, and by the large concourse of neighbors and friends that gathered to pay tribute to his memory, showed in what high esteem he was held. The family have the hearfelt sympathy of the entire community."

Jan. 26, 1883: "Died at Hulls, Ill., Jan. 16, 1883, of typhoid fever, Emma, wife of J. B. Cory, aged 31 years. She was for many years a consistent christian, and although but a few years in our midst, yet by her amiable disposition, she secured to herself a host of friends who will hold in grateful remembrance her many christian virtues. Her mother left her home in Ohio and for six weeks watched by her bedside, and as she heard the muffled oars of the boatman as he neared the banks to bear the last of her six children across the river of death, in agony of soul she exclained, "And must it be so? Cannot one be spared?" And the stricken husband, what language can express the agony of his heart as he returns to his once happy home so lately made desolate. May he have wisdom from on high to train up his motherless children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. I.M. Johnson."
