On 14 May 1818 at Kaskaskia James Crain filed a homestead for 160 acres the N E corner of section 13 in township 6S4W. This would be 1 mile east and 1 mile north of Denmark in what is now Perry County, Illinois. He and his wife Elizabeth (Unknown) came from what is now Randolph County, IL. They had arrived in Randolph Co. from Knox County, Tennesseee area about 1805. No marriage records have been found for them, but they were thought to have married in either Georgia before they went to Tennessee, or in Tennessee before coming to Illinois. They had children: Benjamin b. 22 June 1800 in Tennessee, Joel b. about 1807, Friend b. 12 October 1808, Wesley b. between 1810-1820 William Harrison b. 29 December 1813, Dorcas b. about 1814, Mildred (Milly) b. about 1817, Elizabeth b. between 1817-1818, and Melissa b. about 1822. Friend Crain (my 3rd great grandfather) married Elizabeth House b. 22 January 1815 in Mecklensburg, NC. Their marriage took place 8 November 1836 in Perry County, IL. They were the parents of 9 children: John Rice b.23 March 1838, Dollan b. 1839, George b. 10 June 1846 (my great-great grandfather) Indiana b. 1849, Sandy b. 26 July 1852, Thomas b. 29 Decemeber 1855, Ashby b. 28 August 1857, Martha b. 3 December 1859 and Leo b. 10 June 1863. George Crain b. 10 June 1846 married Catherine Arnold b. 24 January 1846 on 6 February 1867. They lived in Perry and Jackson Co. Illinois. They were the parents of 9 children: Friend, b. 24 March 1868 (my great grandfather), Clain C. b. 17 February 1870, Riley b. 12 February 1871, Lura C. b. 10 August 1875, Reuben b. 16 February 1877, Hannah b. 18 January 1880, Oma b. 3 une 1882, Frederic G. b. 20 June 1885, and Harry b. 19 August 1888. Friend Crain married Rebecca Henson b. March 1866. She was the daughter of John V. and Elizabeth (Tow) Henson. Elizabeth Tow's parents were Reuben Tow and Rebecca Conner. Reuben and Rebecca Tow married 12 April 1837 in Allen Co., Kentucky, they came to Perry Co., IL about 1839-1840. They were the parents of Elizabeth b. about 1838, Matilda b. about 1839, James W. b. 11 March 1842, Amanda E. b. about 1845, Rebecca Jane b. 10 December 1846, an infnat son b. 15 September 1848, Henry b. about 1849. John Y. ?b. about 1851, Dicy Angelina b. about 1854, Nancy ? b. about 1857 John Ewing b. about 1862 and Thomas J. b. 21 September 1863. I also have listed Charles V or W b. 12 Aug 1866, Joseph Reuben b. 14 May 1869 possibly grandchildren as well as Josephine b. about 1874 and John R. b. about 1877. I don't have a lot of information on this family, need help here. John V. & Elizabeth Tow Henson had children: James Hadley b. 20 February 1862, Mary Jane b. 9 May 1868, Rebecca Ann (my great grandmother) b. March 1866, and Benjamin F. b. November 1878. In census records Elizabeth states she was the mother of five, but I have never found a 5th child for them. Any help on these families greatly appreciated, I am willing to share what I have.
