    1. [ILPERRY] Photo of Daniel Gill/Lucinda Pyle/Alara Gill - Mystery Solved!
    2. Brian K Luginbill
    3. The mystery of the photo I mentioned in a previous e-mail is now solved. It is definitely a photo of Daniel Gill, his wife Lucinda Pyle, their daughter Alara Gill (b. 1859), and Daniel's younger sister, Isabelle "Belle" Gill (b. 1857). By using techniques to date the style of dress, and also knowing the approximates ages of the four people involved, we know the photo was probably taken about 1873. It is a carte-de-visite, and has the studio imprint of Stacy & Wheatly, DuQuoin. It's embarrassing that I didn't think of it before, but I was so intent on finding two sisters that I didn't think about the fact the two girls in the photo could be aunt and niece, but only a few years apart. I had forgotten that Isabelle was enumerated with Daniel and Lucinda on the 1870 Perry Co. census. Daniel's and Isabelle's father, George Washington Gill, died in 1863, and their mother, Martha Pelisha "Patsy" (Gresham) Gill died in 1867. Isabelle would have been only ten years old, and apparently went to live with her older brother and his wife. Alara Gill was an only child, and since the two girls were so close in age, they must have been raised as sisters. These photos showed up in a box in Carthage, MO along with other photos of the Taylor and Gill familes. My immediate Taylor/Gill line moved from DuQuoin to Jasper Co., MO in 1868. Not only did they apparently bring family photos with them, but their families back in DuQuoin must have sent many photos to them through the mail. Even though I have already thanked them privately, I want to say 'thanks" again to Jeanette and Stella, who sent info and suggestions to me in an effort to help solve the mystery.
