jean, So sorry for your loss. It happened to me a couple of years ago. Now I pay big bucks to keep computer firewalls and spyware intact. Whatever I can do to help...I have an extensive file of Perry Co. inhabitants. If you want, I can burn a copy of my files and send them to you. You can glean what you need from and trash the rest. Let me know ASAP as I am in MX for the month of Dec. :-) Christina ( Chris) Sharpe nee House Surnames: House, Heape, Benson, Taylor, Opp

Chris, I'm not sure if we've been in contact in the past or not. I've had two major computer crashes and one corrupted file experience, so had lost emails, etc. I just want to mention that I have a William "Herbert" Opp who married Oma "Ruth" Soper in 1901 in Perry Co. Also my 3rd Great-Grandfather was Hansel W. House. I think he was mainly in Washington Co. IL before heading to Kansas, then California where he died in 1880. Let me know if you're interested in any info I may have. Logan Co may be the key. This is also where William Hatcher is found in the 1820-30 census, after which he set out for Perry Co c1836. And William was a Quaker. Although I find neither Henry Eator or John Mumbower on the Quaker CD, that doesn't rule them out as being Quaker. I did find that John was from PA, which is a common place of origin for many Quaker families. So perhaps the connection is thru the Quakers and William's land was the unofficial Quaker burial ground in Perry Co. Makes for interesting history if it can be verified. Cheers, Nel
Henry EATOR (his one surviving son changed the spelling of the last name to EATER) died 29 Sep 1845, and was buried in the Hatcher Cemetery. Until the early 1990s, there was a substantial granite marker at his grave. Henry had come to the area from Ohio. He was joined here by at least one other family from there - that of John MUMBOWER. John acted as Guardian to Henry's minor son Jonas EATER, until Jonas reached his 18th birthday, and came into his inheritance. Henry was apparently quite well-to-do, as Jonas is found in the 1850 Census with $1000 in cash assets. There may have been others who came from the Logan Co., Ohio area to Washington/Perry County. I have not tried to track down how many others. This pattern was not unusual, as I have two other groups who came to that part of Illinois from Ohio, and Kentucky in my research of my direct lines. The Hatcher burial grounds had a number of graves dating from just before, or just after, 1850, and so is very old and long used. It is likely that Henry's wife Elizabeth HUNTER EATOR is buried there, as she died 6 Aug 1845. If memory serves, there was an epidemic of meningitis/typhus in the area at that time. It is also possible, that their daughter Shady EATOR was buried there in June of 1844, and their son George Washington EATOR in July of 1841, as Henry had patented and settled land the area in May of 1841. Our records indicate William Hatcher purchased this land in 1833 and was buried "on his farm" in 1855. According to the History of Randolph, Monroe, and Perry Co, this was one of the first purchases in Perry Co. This "Hatcher cemetery" was deeded to Perry Co in 1893. Records show that none of his sons were buried there and if any of his daughters were buried there, none married an Eator. So I'm curious how it is known that Henry Eator was buried there c1840 and if so, why. It doesn't appear that this was anything more than a family burial ground on private property and Henry doesn't appear to have been "family." Does anyone know who was buried there before 1893 when it was deeded to the county? William Hatcher, bn 22 May 1791, d 30 Jul 1855 was buried there. Cheers, Nel Hatcher
Hi List, I hired a cemetery restorationist to restore a gravestone in Indiana for me and he did a tremendous job. He is part of the Indiana Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project. (I can pass on the name to anyone interested). The group listed above seeks volunteers to help the restorationist restore the cemetery. I do not (as far as I know) have any relatives buried in the Hatcher Cemetery but would be willing to join a group of volunteers in order to help restore it. Maybe together we can do something to save it. KERN and State's Attorney David STANTON will notify surrounding property owners that the cemetery property, owned by the county since 1893, will be reclaimed.
