My Perry County ancestors were Margaret ABERNATHY wife of Turner ABERNATHY. Margaret moved to Perry from Washington County, IL, after Turner died and stayed with her daughters Elizabeth and Celia who were married to Adam and David LYNCH. Margaret's son Nelson Turner ABERNATHY is my ancestor who married Miram Lavina ANDERSON, 1857, Miram was the daughter of Richard Berry ANDERSON (son of Amos) and Elizabeth MARLOW (daughter of Richard) married 1829. Miram's sister, Catherine, married Tyer LINGO and their daughtert Alice born in Texas County, MO, is also my ancestor. Charlie Abernathy

I am researching Frederick SPRENGER (1836-1915). He was born in Germany and migrated at an early age with his parents to the Cincinnati area. He worked in Cincinnati as a machinist and engineer until he was convinced by mine owner Bobby White to build the Red Onion mine, which was supposed to be the first mine in Southern Illinois. It must have been in the Tamaroa, Perry Co., area since that is where Frederick settled his family. I have been unable to find any info on the Red Onion mine. Has anyone ever heard of this mine? The family story was that 4 MARGENTHALERs and 4 GIESERs came together from Germany to the US. My research has shown that this was substantially correct. The MERGENTHALER family (as it was known in Germany) and the GIESER family were both from Oftersheim, Baden, Germany and there is a deep history of ancestors recorded in the Ortssippenbuch of Oftersheim. Philipp Jakob MERGENTHALER m. Katharina Elisabetha GIESER (Elizabeth GIESER) Anna Maria MERGENTHALER m. Georg Adam GIESER (Adam GIESER) Johann Joseph MERGENTHALER m. Katherine GIESER Susanna Dorothea MERGENTHALER m. Johann Goerg GIESER (George GIESER) Carl Heinrich MEGENTHALER m. Marguerith BARTH all immigrated to the US but not all on the same ship. Jacob MARGENTHALER (Philipp Jakob MERGENTHALER) was my ancestor. He immigrated to the US in 1853. I believe he was not married at the time he immigrated but may have married Katherine GIESER aboard ship or shortly after arrival. They were in Jackson Co. Missouri during the 1860 census with several children. Their sons William and Jacob adopted the spelling MORGENTHALER and their descendants used this spelling. Their son John adopted the spelling MARGENTHALER. All of John's descendants except for his son J. Robert maintaned this spelling. J. Robert used MORGENTHALER. John MARGENTHALER born 1898 in Jackson Co. MO married Florence KUHNERT on 19 Apri 1892. They lived in Murphysboro, Jackson Co. IL until at least 1801 but had moved to Pinckneyville by 1907 where they remained. They had 8 children. Florence KUHNERT was the daughter of Karl KUHNERT and Augusta Amelia SIEDSCHLAG of Perry Co. Karl KUHNERT was born 13 April 1832 in Treibach, Schleswig, Germany. He immigrated to the US where he married Augusta on 26 Jan 1868 near Pittsburg Pennsylvania. Augusta was also a first generation immigrant from Germany. They had moved to Perry County IL by 1874. Their third child, Florence KUHNERT was born 27 May 1874 in Perry Co. Karl and Augusta had 10 children. Alexander CRAIG came to the US from Ireland in the late 1700's. His marriage to Agnes HUEY and the birth places of his children trace a migration from North Carolina, to Tennessee, to Kentucky. The family finally settled in Perry Co IL. The children were: Isaac Alexander CRAIG, John W. CRAIG, William CRAIG, and Joseph CRAIG. I am descendant from Joseph CRAIG. Joseph CRAIG born 1811 in Kentucky married Rachel COUCH about 1838. I am still trying to find evidence of this marriage and clear evidence of Rachel's parentage. I suspect her parents are James COUCH and Elizabeth McBRIDE of Randolph Co. IL. Joseph later married Mrs. Dorcas Amanda SMITH (nee LESLIE). Joseph CRAIG and Rachel COUCH's children were: Nancy Jane CRAIG and Alexander CRAIG. Alexander CRAIG born 17 May 1844 in Perry Co. IL married Clarissa Ellen McNEILL daughter of Thomas McNEIL and Clarissa Ann COURSEY. Thomas McNEILL came to the US from Ireland on 2 Feb 1837 aboard the ship Napoleon arriving in New Orleans. He brought with him his 4 daughters but not his wife. He married Clarissa Ann COURSEY on 4 May 1846 in Clinton Co. IL. Their children were David McNEILL and Clarissa Ellen McNEILL. Thomas McNEILL later married Catherine ALLEN. Alexander CRAIG (b. 1844) and Clarissa Ellen McNEILL had 6 children. My ancestor was their daughter Rachel Ann CRAIG born 30 Oct 1871. Rachel's son Harry CRAIG married Hazel Dell SHUTE on 15 Dec 1910. Hazel SHUTE was the daughter of George Washington SHUTE and Rebecca CARSON. George SHUTE was born 19 Nov 1844 in Gloucester Co. NJ. He married Rebecca CARSON in 15 April 1869 in Randolph Co. IL. After serving in the Civil War he was awarded land in York Co. Nebraska where they briefly moved. Their first child Mary C. SHUTE was born there in 1873 but by 1875 they were back in southern Illinois finally settling by 1881 in Perry Co. Their daughter Hazel SHUTE was born 8 Oct 1889, the sixth of seven children.
