    2. Nancy Helvey
    3. Hi List, Thank you to all of you who helped me to get my cemeteries straight. I visited Galum Baptist this past summer and could not remember how to get there. I know that it was not far from Mueller Hill Cemetery. Does anyone out there have a listing for the Nine Mile Cemetery? I am interested in the surnames Helvey, Viers, Fulton, West, Davis, Vineyard. Thank you again, Nancy Helvey

    1. [ILPERRY] holidays & lookups
    2. To all on the list, I love you all dearly, but please pardon if I don't get lookups back to you as promptly. Everytime there is a "family getogether" type holiday coming up, everyone requests more lookups and I am swamped right now. And with our beautiful (aka abnormal) weather up here in Minnesota, it is hard to stay indoors and look at cemetery books. LOL. But I am working on requests as fast as I can...just bear with me. 2. Researching: Eaton, Haggard, Groves, Smith, Gladson, Killingsworth Jean, Yes, it is your site- and an excellent one it is, too. I have enjoyed much on the site. However, my Dad and I are not extremely direction-impaired, and, yes we did have trouble finding the cemetery because we were using the car odometer and a map of the township range system and trying to get closer to the area of an approx. 4 mile mark. At first we did not notice Galum because the other two cemeteries are more noticeable and when we looked at our odometer we decided these two cemeteries were not far enough to be correct, so didn't spend much time in that area. We had limited time, and I, unfortunately was not familiar with the area. Anyway, sorry to offend. I'm sure I should have said something to you before mentioning our little fiasco on the list. We never for a moment thought it reflected on your abilities. Actually, it ended up being amusing to us- after it was over. Cathey

    1. Re: [ILPERRY] Nine Mile and Galum
    2. It just occurred to me that my directions to Galum Baptist Cemetery needed to be a little clearer. The directions I gave assume that you are entering the county on Hwy 154 from the western edge and traveling east. Going that direction start counting off 2.5 to 2.7 miles from the point where you intersect Hwy 150. If you do this you should see the cemeteries and large white house (on left) just as I said. Galum Cemetery is on the same side as the house and just after it. Warning: there is a very good website out with a listing of Galum Cemetery. It gives similar directions but states that the Cemetery is about 4 miles past the intersection of the two highways. My Dad and I spent an hour going up and down 154, counting off 4 miles and straining for the sight of a cemetery! There was none. A helpful neighbor even sent us off to Galum Presbyterian Cemetery which is miles away. DO NOT FALL FOR THAT ONE- they are not the same cemetery! We found the cemetery by accident, when, in total frustration, we stopped at the aforementioned large white house to beg direction. No one answered but I happened to glance to the side of the house and see another little cemetery (there is one on each side of the house). Without much hope we went to look at it anyway and the rest is history (well, at least it's a story my Dad and I will tell for a while!) Cathey

    1. Re: [ILPERRY] Nine Mile and Galum
    2. Nancy, No, they are not the same. I have relatives at both and visited both cemeteries back in September. Galum Baptist is just off Hwy 154 (visible from the road), about 2.5 miles after 154 intersects with Hwy 150, in the western section of the county. There are two other, slightly more visible, cemeteries in the same area and then Galum on the left side of the road, after a large white frame house (when you see -and smell- the pig farm, you have just passed it!) I will have to ask my father how we got to Nine Mile- it is now surrounded by old mining sites and he said the roads were often changed that got you to the cemetery. If someone else does not answer first, I will see if I can get him to. He and my Mom subscribe to this list in digest form and I may be able to get him to reply. Hope this helps, Cathey

    1. [ILPERRY] Lloyd Kelly And Newpaper Letter
    2. Nancy Helvey
    3. Hello List, Since it is almost Veteran's Day I thought it might be nice to try to locate the family of a LLOYD KELLY/KELLEY who served in WW2. Lloyd was the best friend of my father RAYMOND HELVEY of Pinckneyville who served in the US NAVY aboard the battleship USS TENNESSEE. Lloyd was from P'Ville also. While I'm on the subject, here is a "letter to the Editor" from a P'Ville newspaper sent from my dad and a EDWIN E. ZIPPRODT to a "Matt" who was probably an editor/columnist. Dear Matt: I suppose you are wondering who this could be from? Well Matt, at one time I lived in Pinckneyville and was there long enough that I feel it is a good city. I have written letters before to you, but haven't mailed them. Helvey said, "This one must go." Helvey, a very good friend of mine, who is in the same division also receives your paper, and we enjoy it to the fullest extent, especially the service men's news. We just finished reading Woodie Herrmanny and others in your column. Helvey and I have been together for a year now, and around plenty. I'm not allowed to say where we are going, but can say we are fine and keeping ourselves busy. I am in charge of the Ship's Store and Helvey in charge of General Store Keeping (GSK). We are both kept very busy of the time. Matt, I know you are busy too, so I won't take any more of your valuable time. We just wanted to say we really enjoy your paper and know it sure builds up our moral. Matt, keep up the good work, and the fellows aboard ship sure do enjoy your paper. Sincerely, Raymond L. Helvey. Edwin E. Zipprodt. NOTE: Zip, we remember you and want to say our time is never too full but we can enjoy swell letters such as yours and Helvey's. Matt.
