Teresa and bbd'ers this is indeed a nice site. I checked out DuBois area and found "graves" written on The Old Finacher Place which my g-grandfather August Rehmus owned .... and which has stayed in the family, owned now by my Aunt Elsie Rehmus (wife of my mother's deceased brother)..of near Atlanta. Mr and Mrs Financher are buried there ... I didn't know anyone else knew about them but family and some of the surrounding neighbors. http://www.topozone.com/find.asp Charlotte Alexander mailto:[email protected]
...ok guys...lets get serious for a second..... :) ...can someone tell me where i can go to find Missouri Social Security death index online? thought i had a site bookmarked for that..but can't find it now that i need it! :( thanks for your help! Jean [email protected]
Don't know if I forwarded this or not. This is a great tool to locate that mysterious cemetery. I haven't been able to get it to show the individual stones yet but by using the relocate and zoom buttons you can definitely find that cemetery. Then pop it up to 1:25,000 and Large. You will see everything, EXACT location of the cemeteries and so on. You can use it for other purposes of course but I was impressed with the details on cemeteries and even single graves. I found it is best to SAVE AS from the File menu and then print later. Also, if you save your maps you can look at them any time you want. Cheryl Rothwell [email protected]

To anyone interested in the Swanwick Cemeteries. At one time, well over 70 years ago, there was a Swanwick Baptist Church. However there was no cemetery associated with it. This church was located approx. 4 miles straight north of Winkle. I just talked with the son of a man who helped move this church to Winkle where there was an addition added to it. It is still there and is now an apartment building. The new Baptist church, known as Winkle Baptist is located a mile or so east of Winkle on Rt. 13. Yesterday I drove to where this church was years ago. There is nothing there. The Ragland and the Boyle cemetery is about 1 1/4 mi. from my house. My paternal family and mother are buried at the Bethel Cemetery. The Bethel Associate Presbyterian Church was built on about 6 acres of land in 1850. On this '6' acres was an area for the church with a fenced yard, because livestock roamed freely at that time; a grove in which to tie horses and rigs; a stile somewhere on the church yard for easier mounting and dismounting from either horseback or horse drawn vehicles; and a country church burying ground. This was later called the Bethel Cemetery, as it is today. Some of this information can be found in the Combined History of Randolph, Monroe and Perry Counties, c 1883. The first grave known in Bethel is that of Jane Dermond - [email protected]
I will be in Pinckneyville today and Washington Co. tomorrow. Will check it out and get back to you. Jo, I checked the records at the county bldg. I found most of the children and John & Mary E. listed as parents. I found the marriage for John and Melissa Kenney. I did not find a marriage for John and Mary E. Before 1916 there was no law said a marriage, death or birth information had to be turned in. A lot of them were turned in but a lot were not. I think it just depended on the authority doing the service, eg. J.P., Doctor, midwife etc. Minnie J.'s delayed birth certificate says "Minnie Florence". John just don't have a death certificate. I have not looked up the obituary yet - even if I had the machine would not have printed a decent copy. They repair man has been called. I will mail the certificate for Browning tomorrow. I just obtained a 1992 death notice from the Belleville News-Democrat, and I think he quite probably is a relation of mine. I am hoping that someone on the list might know more about this gentleman. How can I get a copy of the obit for John Shirley Taylor, died December 12, 1914 in Du Quoin? Jo
I've not been with Perry Co rootsweb very long, and I was wondering if someone could tell me what to do. Response on Swanwick Cem. in general to this list. There is some confusion about Swanwick, especially if you are reading obits, etc.: There are FOUR cemeteries around the twship of Swanwick. The actual Swanwick family cemetery is NE of there with almost exclusively SWANWICK family members from England. Just south of Hwy 13 is the Bethel Cemetery, aka Bethel Baptist Cem., aka Swanwick Baptist Cem., etc. That is the larger cemetery. There also is a Ragland cemetery east of Swanwick with few graves and also Boyle Cem. aka SpringHill Cem. that is east also. They are all in the same general area and get confused on death certificates. But I have "records" for all as best they are done. Hope this helps...or confuses even more. Chris
Thanks to those who let me know that the DuQuoin Orphanage is now Francie's On Line Bed and Breakfast, especially Peg, Stella and Reba. I appreciate your assistance! I have contacted them off-list, but wanted to thank the whole list for being such a helpful group. Barbara Moses [email protected]
Stella, yes I want the death certificate. I would like a copy of the obit too, if it's not too much trouble. Thanks for all your help. Jo Kramer 317 S Park St Osceola, IA 50213-1441
Hi List, Need to know if Phoebe TAYLOR (1815-1864) and her husband Asa A. HILL (1810?-1864) are buried at the Swanwick Cemetery. Also, did Oak Grove Baptist Church take the place of Swanwick Baptist? Thanks, Nancy Helvey
Good morning, List: I just learned yesterday that my mother and her first cousin were probably in the DuQuoin Orphanage somewhere between 1920 and 1926. I wonder if any of you have knowledge of that facility and could tell me how I might obtain information in hopes of verifying the whereabouts of my mother and her cousin at this time. As I understand it, they were neither adopted; but later went to live with other family members (or possibly close friends of the families). I would greatly appreciate any help you can give! Barbara Moses [email protected]
Does anyone have an Index or burial information for the Swanwick cemetery? Clarissa "Coursey" McNeil/McNeal d. 5 Sept. 1860 and information has her buried in Swanwick Cemetery. Her first husband Isaac Johnston is also listed as buried there. Can anyone verify this? If so are there any Coursey's buried there? Is the cemetery online? Thank you very much. All replies are appreciated. Richard W. Coursey
Stella, Thank you for going to the trouble for me. Yes, I would like the obit for Oliver Columbus Browning. Tell me what to do now. Also does it say anything about his parents? Jo
