Perhaps this will help clear up some of the "Poor Farm/ Asylum" questions there seems to be a lot of confusion.. stopped by Alpha Park Library in Bartonville, got the following info there... The Library property used to be part of the State Hospital grounds. (the State Hospital was a mental hospital not a poor farm.) George Zeller (the current mental hospital carries the Zeller family name, and is located in the city of Peoria, about 15 miles away) had a work farm there with basically no buildings, just farmland, which gave therapy and training to able-bodied patients, and made the hospital pretty much self-sufficient for food, from what librarian said. The old library (across Airport Rd from new one) is beside a private family cemetery which is unrelated to the hospital and was the children's mental hospital. All mental patients that died in custodial care of the state were buried over on the main hospital grounds, now an industrial park development. The librarian gave me a web address where some history of the property can be obtained: http://www.rsa.lib.il.us/~ilalive/files/zm/htm1/zm000001.html RUSS [email protected] Funny, I don't remember being absent minded.
