Hi, Could any one tell me when the railroad went through Peoria. I'm trying to track down a ancestor who was working on the railroad. His name is John Miller b. abt 1831 Prussia. Charlotte
Hi Charlotte, According to an old letter I have, dated July 8, 1855, from Peoria County, IL: "Â…The railroad runs through Chillicothe and it is doing a good business. Chillicothe is a growing fine. There is a twelve story besides a furniture store and tin shop. There is a new steam saw mill in there too that does first rate work and a carriage and wagon factory and lots of buildings going up all of the time. There is four trains of cars runs through there every twenty-four hours. They look very nice too agoing like thunder. Sometimes there is a string for a half mile long with an engine at each end pushing and pulling like Boston. We are agoing down to town tomorrow and take the children down and let them see the cars and town." Hope this helps, Anita C. Charlotte, I don't know about the railroad in Peoria, but here's a site that may be of help with information on ancestors who worked for the railroads. http://www.rrb.gov/geneal.html Diane Zanetti ZANETTI, LIZOTTE, IODICE, AUSTIN -----Original Message----- From: Flock's [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, August 05, 2000 5:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ILPEORIA-L] Peoria Junction Hi, Could any one tell me when the railroad went through Peoria. I'm sorry that I can't give you much information. I do know that the Fort Clark Horse Railway had offices at N. 1600 Perry Street, Peoria. John H. Hall was president and H. W. Wells was secretary. I have letters from John Hall to his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary A Hall, dated 1881 and 1884. I don't know how long it had been in existence at that time.
