Hello, listers: Does anyone have info on carnivals that operated or were based in Peoria around this time? My g-grandfather Henry Hoffner was a carnival worker in 1920, listed as such and living at the time with common-law wife Laura. They later moved to Cherry in Bureau County. Henry's younger brother, William Hoffner, moved to Peoria in about 1920 and married Beatrice Jacobs. He was also in the carnival business and was known as a "museum man" (maybe a blanket term for carnie). William and Beatrice lived in Peoria Heights for 32 years and retired from the carnival business in 1940. Henry continued in the business for some time, but both brothers traveled around the area. For example, William often operated rides and other amusements in Metamora during Old Settlers Days. Henry operated smaller carnivals at county fairs around LaSalle County and likely surrounding counties. Any clues would be appreciated. Tim Bryant Urbana (formerly of Streator)
