After I wrote you the first time, I remembered about 12 years ago I sent away for my deceased father in law's WW I records, I still have the address where I wrote. I did have my father in law's service/serial number, and they did send me his records, but perhaps you can write them and get his service number based on his home address at the time he enlisted. The address I wrote to was: National Personnel Records Center Military Personnel Records 9700 Page Avenue St. Louis, Mo. 63132-5100 Marie in Illinois ----- Original Message ----- From: Diana Davis Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2003 4:03 PM To: ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ILPEORIA-L] Service Number We suspect there would be some papers or dog tags in his apartment but we are not there ---about 10 hr. of driving time and we can't go right now. Another place to check is the County Recorder's office. He may, or may not, have had his discharged registered with the county. I just remembered that I took mine to the county court house in the city in which I lived when inducted into the service. I had forgotten that I did that until I read this email. Of course, I have not lived in that county for forty-five years! Think it was recorded so if I lost it later, I could retrieve a copy. Mel Martin
Many of the WWII returning service persons recorded their discharge papers in the county court house. I know that my husband recommended that all do so. Just another suggestion as to a place to look for them. Barbara
Most people seem to have kept their discharge papers. My husband said they were told to keep them forever and he did. I would assume the number is on that. Go to your state veterans office. They should be able to assist you. When my husband passed away, the cemetery manager contacted the veterans office and everything was taken care of by them. Diana, This website will tell you how to order his military records. You can order them from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. Be aware that a majority of the records were destroyed in a fire in 1973 but when I wrote for my fathers records, they sent me a recreation of his discharge papers ( it was 1 page) from alternate sources of information. It included his service number. You may have to send a copy of the death certificate along with your request. http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records/st andard_form_180.html Hope this helps. Among his personal belongings, did he still have his dog tags? His service number would be on that. Did he belong to the VFW or the American Legion? The number would be on his application when he first signed up. You may not be aware that the State Archives is working on a pre 1916 death index. The work is being done by volunteers and will take a very long time. Remember, there are a lot of folks who died before 1916 who didn't get a death certificate. But if they did eventually it should be in the database. I am trying to determine the children of Howard C. Keith the son of Hampden Keith b.1776 Bridgewater, MA who was married to Sally Bassett and moved to Winslow, ME after 1800. He is descended from James Keith who was the first minister of Bridgewater who came to America about 1662. I have the Bridgewater Town history which only goes thru to Hampden’s children, including Howard C. Keith. Howard first moved to Michigan and then to Livingston co., Illinois in the 1850's. I have found his son Willard S. in the 1880 census for Amity, Livingston Co. And I have a son Hampden 28 years old living next door to him in the 1860 census of Reading Twp, Livingston Co., I also show 4 children at home Willard S. 23, Sarah 24, Margaret 22, and Anna 9 who was born in Michigan. I also show Howard C.’s younger brother George Hampden living in the same town in the 1860 census. My problem is that I have my GG Grandfather, James H. Keith, living a few counties over in Wapella, De Witt Co., in the 1860 census, 25 years old. He was born in Maine. His daughter is later born in Vassalboro, ME. There are only a few possibilities as to who the father can be and I think I have it narrowed down to Howard C. Keith. Unfortunately I was unable to locate his birth record and have been unable to find his death date. James H. worked for Illinois Central Railroad during the 1860’s and 1870’s as a Railroad conductor. He lived in Wapella and then in the 1870 census he is living in the 1st ward of Peoria with his family. Any help on this would be appreciated. Regards, Frank Cullison
Death records are for 1916-1950 except for a very, very, very few counties. The earlier records depend on volunteers to transcribe [and, of course, the cooperation of the county clerk]. There is NO guarantee that a person who was born or died before 1916 has a record. Looks like you are having the same problem I am, working with a very common name. There are 5 James Wards listed on the Illinois State Death Index, that died in Peoria between 1916 and 1950. Two have no middle initial and died 12/28/1916 and 9/18/1917. One has the middle initial H and died March 28, 1938. I will post the Illinois State Death Index web site next, perhaps you can find him. This message bounced because only subscribers may post. If anyone can help this man you will need to reply directly to him. His email is at the bottom of his message. I have removed his address and phone number. For Peoria County researchers: I am not a subscriber but find myself in need of look-ups for the following situation: Charles Edward Maloon was born in February 1872 in Fulton County, IL. According to his father's civil war pension documents he was probably retarded. He may have moved to Peoria County, IL with his mother and brother in the 1890's. I have received his death certificate from Peoria County which indicates that he was murdered "in his shack at the foot of Sanger Street". He was apparently living alone and working as a "junker". He was last seen alive on 28 March 1938 and his body was discovered by his brother on 16 April 1938. According to the inquest/autopsy his death was caused by "two bullet wounds to the head inflicted by .38 calibre lead bullets" and he was "killed by party or parties unknown to Jury with murderous intent." The certificate states that he was buried in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, IL. If anyone has access to the archives for a local paper for the period I feel certain there may have been some mention of the case in the week following the discovery of his body. I would appreciate receiving a copy of any articles on the case. If anyone has access to Springdale Cemetery I would appreciate receiving a transcription of the gravestone or a picture of same. While in the cemetery I would appreciate checking for his mother, Martha A. Maloon, who died in 1906 or his brother, Henry Harry Maloon, born 1874 and died after 1938. Henry's wife was Grace A. Maloon who died in 1920. Transcriptions or photos for any would be appreciated. Finally, he had a sister, Mary Ellen Maloon, born 1880 who probably was married in Peoria County. If there is any local record of her marriage I would appreciate a copy. I live near Washington, DC and frequently visit both the National Archives and the Library of Congress and would be willing to do lookups of census, military pensions, etc in return for the above research. If you can be of any assistance please contact me via one of the avenues below. Thank you very much. Michael Meloon meloonm@aol.com
Dear Fellow Researchers: I certainly need some help in locating marriage information on James Herbert Anderson and Mary Millard sometime between 1884 and 1885. I have searched and searched the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index and can not locate them in any county. I have no reason to think they would have not married in Illinois. Their first child, Anna M. Anderson, was born July 1885 in Peoria. Karen
The Illinois statewide Marriage Index shows that the Peoria county marriages are just shown for the years 1825-1879.....click on to see each county and what years are covered. Your best bet would be to call or write the county court house. Also, I noticed something else, when the marriage occured in the Catholic church, for some reason sometimes the priest neglects to return the signed license back to the county....I have found this to be true quite a few times in Peoria county.
