Eliza McKown was married to Alanson Bouton on Jan. 5, 1854. Mr. Bouton died July 3, 1868 and their only child, Miss Minnie, still lives at home with her mother. Amanda McKown married Isaac Crowe and now lives in Toulon, Ill.; her children are: Wm. Crowe of Iowa, Mrs. Ella Moss of Jubilee and Mrs. Jennie Smith of Toulon. Hugh McKown married Lizzie Bouton on March 29, 1864 and died April 8, 1874. Their children are Mrs. Lena Miller; Emma (deceased); Alanson B., living in Iowa; Mrs. Lois Beall and Mrs. Stella Graves. Levi McKown married Jane German and they are now living at Elmwood, Ill. Their children are: Mrs. Allie Carter, William, Lewis, Albert, Bessie, Frank, Edith and Eldon. Mary McKown married Hiram Bronson, both of them now dead; a daughter, Mrs. Clara Archibald is living in Iowa and a son, Mark, went to the Phillippines some years ago and has not been heard from. Cynthia McKown married Malchiah Mendell and she is still living in Kansas, although now critically ill. She has six children: Mrs. Mary Gadberry of Russell, Kan.; Mrs. Ida Bowman of Moran, Kan.; Luther A. of Gorham, Kan.; Eliza H. of Russell, Kan.; and Iva L. of Russell, Kan. (Mrs. Mendell died April 18, 1911, and was buried in the Russell Cemetery). Mrs. Bouton is probably the oldest settler now in this locality. She remembers the building of the first school house, the coming of the Slane family from Kickapoo, also the coming of the Blanchards, the coming of Mr. Stevens, the building of the first Morrow store, the staking out of the original village in 1837, the building of the first Presbyterian Church, where Cheesman Bros. Store now stands and has been familiar with practically all of Princeville's history. She also remembers the starting of the cemetery out on the Northwest hill and can tell of the burials in the South woods for a few years before that. There were many hardships during these early years that the people of today know nothing about, but along with the hardships there were many pleasant happenings. Best of all was the old spirit of hospitality and ever readiness to help friends.
Suzanne One of my cousins has a Sophia Gardner in her family line. She married Andrew Hunt in Cayuga County, NY (or possibly an adjacent county) sometime before 1822 and they immigrated to Peoria, IL around 1830. I'm not positive about this but I thought that some of the Gardner family followed them to Peoria (or vice versa). I will Cc this email to my cousin, who also lives in the Peoria area, and if she has anything more on the Gardner family, she can contact you. mel slane peoria, il ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue VanCleave" <suzannevancleave@comcast.net> To: <ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2003 2:01 PM Subject: [ILPEORIA-L] Floyd Gardner > Hi all. > > I was wondering if anyone out there would have any information on my > grandfather, Floyd James Mitchell Gardner. > My mom and I know very little about him. > All we know is that he was: > Born about 1895 in Peoria, Illinois, > Divorced from a wife in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois (previous to his marriage to my grandmother in 1931 here in Colorado) > About 1936 he disappeared from here in Colorado > > Any help would be appreciated greatly. > > Thanks in advance > Suzanne VanCleave > Federal Heights, Colorado > > > ==== ILPEORIA Mailing List ==== > Visit the Peoria County ILGenWeb Home Page! > http://www.usgennet.org/~ilpeoria/index.html > >
Hi all. I was wondering if anyone out there would have any information on my grandfather, Floyd James Mitchell Gardner. My mom and I know very little about him. All we know is that he was: Born about 1895 in Peoria, Illinois, Divorced from a wife in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois (previous to his marriage to my grandmother in 1931 here in Colorado) About 1936 he disappeared from here in Colorado Any help would be appreciated greatly. Thanks in advance Suzanne VanCleave Federal Heights, Colorado
Karen The "museum" in Princeville is officially known as the Princeville Heritage Center and is located at 325 N Ostrom Avenue, Princeville, IL 61559. The only scheduled hours that I know of are May-October on Saturdays from 9-11 (and by apptmt). I think the phone number there is (309) 385-1916 but I'm not sure of that, and you might not get an answer. The museum is operated by the Historical Association of Princeville and their mailing address is PO Box 608, Princeville, IL 61559. The phone number given is actually the home phone of one of the principals in the organization - Finch Stowell (309) 385-2394. The quickest way to get information on the museum would probably be to call the 385-2394 number and ask for Finch Stowell. The Historical Association has a website at http://www.museumsusa.org/data/museums/IL/154680.htm. There is also a website on the museum itself at http://www.camp150.com/princeville.html but it doesn't have much info in it, just some photos of the inside of the museum. mel slane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen" <karenh_55904@yahoo.com> To: <ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 10, 2003 6:54 PM Subject: Re: [ILPEORIA-L] Princeville > Mel, can you give me more info on the museum? > Where it is, if it's open regular hours, etc.? > > Thanks! > Karen Hammer > > > --- Mel Slane <melvinslane1@insightbb.com> wrote: > > > If anyone is doing research that involves > > families from Princeville, be > > aware that there is a museum there that has a > > pretty good collection of > > books, clippings, photos, etc. It's a small > > scale operation so you would > > have to go there in person to do research > > though. > > > > mel slane > > peoria, il > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: "Sandra Weber" <marana@charter.net> > > To: <ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com> > > Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2003 10:56 PM > > Subject: [ILPEORIA-L] Princeville > > > > > > > I have a small book which consists of four > > volumes regarding the History > > of > > > Princeville by the Old Settlers Society. I also have those 4 volumes about Princeville in Peoria County that Iris is talking about. My family the Slanes have lived there since the 1840s to the present. There are also quite a few of us living in Peoria. I can do lookups also and I have a scanner so I can scan and send family histories if anyone needs them. Regarding the Princeville cemeteries, the Peoria library has listings for both cemeteries that are good through the 1960s or 1970s I believe. If anyone is doing research that involves families from Princeville, be aware that there is a museum there that has a pretty good collection of books, clippings, photos, etc. It's a small scale operation so you would have to go there in person to do research though. mel slane peoria, il ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra Weber" <marana@charter.net> To: <ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2003 10:56 PM Subject: [ILPEORIA-L] Princeville > I have a small book which consists of four volumes regarding the History of > Princeville by the Old Settlers Society. I have a small book which consists of four volumes regarding the History of Princeville by the Old Settlers Society. I believe there may be some information in it regarding the White family. My ancestor, Basilius German, was a resident of Princeville, however at one time he resided just north of Princeville in Stark Co. Princeville itself is in Peoria Co. This book also has the cemetery inscriptions copied in it for Princeville for the town cemetery and the Catholic cemetery. These inscriptions, however, are not up to date. I will take a look at the book this week. If you already have the information from this, please do let me know. ----- Original Message ----- From: "IRIS L M MILLER" <irislm@kc.rr.com> To: <ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 08, 2003 12:15 PM Subject: [ILPEORIA-L] Re: Peoria County Families History > John Thank! > I know a lot of the information at FamilySearch is not correct, > A person out side of our family took it upon himself to put our family > information at FamilySearch.com and quite a bit of the information is > incorrect. one of many things > he has them living Princeville, Stark County, Illinois???, > I just wanted to be sure if my family lived in Peoria or Starke County, > The H.J.L.McKown and Hugh White Families (White Grove)went to Princeville to > live in 1831 and The Joseph Mendell Family in 1836. I've been taking advantage of the (temporarily) free HeritageQuest service that was posted earlier on this list and I've discovered that it actually complements other resources such as Ancestry.com. I did some census searching and got different results from the two services. That is, data that was not on Ancestry was found on HeritageQuest and vice versa. For the price, it should be a good investment. Question though, do you have to be a Tazewell resident to sign up, as you would have to be if it was offered through a library ? mel slane peoria, il ----- Original Message ----- From: <Lyd32@aol.com> To: <ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2003 6:32 PM Subject: Re: [ILPEORIA-L] Tazewell Update > In a message dated 11/9/03 5:40:44 PM Central Standard Time, > LoganCty@mindspring.com writes: > > << The new feature is a subscription to Heritage Quest, a super resource. TCGHS Web Site Update In order to implement some of the new features talked about later in this issue, I've had to move the TCGHS website hosting from rootsweb.com. So, in order to get to our website, you will now need to always use the www.tcghs.org address rather than www.rootsweb.com/~iltcghs address. Please update any of your favorites or bookmarks to the new address. The new feature is a subscription to Heritage Quest, a super resource. You can read more about it on the web site at the new address above. Definitely not Elmwood Park... I don't believe Elmwood Park has any folks like her in residence. It was likely a misprint for the town mentioned in Will County. -----Original Message----- From: Gyngyr@aol.com [mailto:Gyngyr@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2003 1:33 PM To: ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILPEORIA-L] OPRAH's property What it says in the newspaper is "Elwood Park" -- can't we assume that was a misprint and her property is actually in "Elmwood Park" in the Chicago area? Oprah is rich and has several properties probably. How does that relate to IL-Peoria genealogy? Bill
