    1. [ILPEORIA-L] Re Hurff A Saunders
    2. Robert Parks
    3. To clarify my last email I submit the following information. Hurff Ackerman Saunders b.10 Jul, 1903 d.29 Aug, 1966 Father Elmore Lee Saunders b. ca 1874 Mother Mary Ackerman b. unknown Grandfather William I Saunders b. ca 1859 Grandmother Mary Selina Hurff b.11 May, 1850 Father of Mary S Hurff is Thomas Hurff of Elmwood, IL (owned the house of the Elmwood County Club, Golf Course) Hurff A Saunders and his wife of five years show up on the 1930 census at age 26 as a civil engineer working for and oil company. He evidently ended up in Alaska working for the government. See below. I would like to get any information on his ancestors in Il as they were from the Elmwood /Peoria area. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >From the U S Senate Mr. MURKOWSKI. (Senator of Alaska) Mr. President, I rise today to introduce a bill that will dedicate the Juneau, Alaska Federal building in honor of Hurff Saunders who passed away in 1996. Hurff was a lifelong Alaskan who touched the lives of countless people in Southeast Alaska and played an important role in Alaska's history both as a territory and as a state. Among his many accomplishments, Hurff was a federal government civil engineer in charge of the construction of the Juneau federal building. Typical of Hurff's efforts, the Juneau federal building project was completed on time and under budget. In addition, Hurff helped to correct many of the navigational charts for Southeast Alaska thereby assisting the United States Navy and the Coast Guard in safely carrying out their missions in southeast Alaska during World War II. I am privileged to have known Hurff and his family quite well. Hurff's wife Florence was one of my teachers as a young boy growing up in Ketchikan. Hurff and Florence were wonderful people, who left a long and lasting impression on those around them. Mr. President, I have received copies of a number of resolutions, including one passed by the City and Borough of Juneau, all requesting that the Juneau federal building be dedicated in Hurff's memory. Many other Alaskans who also knew Hurff have taken the time to write and to share their support. Hurff was a dedicated public servant who touched the lives of many Alaskans. Naming the Juneau federal building in his honor would be a fitting and lasting tribute to his memory. Finally, Mr. President, I ask unanimous consent that a copy of this legislation and supporting resolutions be printed in the Record.

Could you also give us the maiden names of the wives, etc. Give us the names and dates if the children also. Also, if you know where they were born, where they were when they died; etc. All that information helps us to help you. 3. Very interesting Robert, wonder if my gggrandmother who was a Jkvr. in the Netherlands and married against her parents wishes a commoner, (a French doctor) and was disinherited, wondered if that was considered a Morganatic marriage, since she was the one of royal birth. Marie in Illinois ----- Original Message ----- From: Robert Parks Sent: Sunday, January 25, 2004 4:34 PM To: ILPEORIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ILPEORIA-L] Morganatic Marriages Here is a litte longer explanation at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morganatic_marriage Bob in Benton, PA Morganatic marriage From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A morganatic marriage is a type of marriage which can be contracted in certain countries, usually between persons of unequal social rank (unebenbürtig in German), which prevents the passage of the husband's titles and privileges to the wife and any children born of the marriage. Often, this is a marriage between a male from a royal or reigning house, often a historical German state, and a woman of lesser status (a non-royal or reigning house, or a woman with a low-status profession such as actress). Neither the bride nor any children of the marriage has any claim on the groom's titles, rights, or entailed property. The children are considered legitimate on other counts and the prohibition of bigamy applies. Morganatic, from the Latin phrase matrimonium ad morganaticam, refers to the gift given by the groom to the bride on the morning after the wedding. The practice of morganatic marriage was most common in the German-speaking parts of Europe, where equality in marriage was considered an important principle among the reigning houses and high nobility. The German name was Ehe zur linken Hand (marriage by the left hand) and the husband gave his left hand during the wedding ceremony instead of the right. Morganatic marriage was not possible as such in England, Great Britain, or the United Kingdom. The French equivalent was a (openly) secret marriage. Examples of morganatic marriage: € Franz Ferdinand of Austria and Countess Sophie Chotek von Chotkowa. The bride was made Princess (later Duchess) of Hohenberg by Franz Josef. Their children took their mother's name and rank, and were excluded from the imperial succession. € Prince Alexander of Hesse, son of the Grand Duke of Hesse and the Rhine, and Countess Julia von Hauke. The Grand Duke made the bride Princess of Battenburg, and the resulting family provided a ruler of Bulgaria and royal consorts for Spain and the United Kingdom. € Prince Alexander of Württemberg and Claudine Rhedey. She was made Countess of Hohenstein; their children were later granted the title of Prince of Teck. The eldest son, Franz, was later made Duke of Teck. His daughter Mary of Teck married George V of the United Kingdom. € Ludwig Wilhelm, Duke in Bavaria and (actress) Henriette Mendel. She was created Freifrau von Wallersee, and their daughter, Marie Louise, Countess Larisch von Moennich, was a confidante of Empress Elisabeth ("Sisi") of Austria. € Louis XIV of France married Madame de Maintenon in secret. As there were no provisions for morganatic marriage in British law, specific statutory means of depriving Wallis Simpson of the titles of her husband, formerly King Edward VIII had to be improvised. It has been suggested that similar arrangements could be cobbled together for Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles should they wish to be married and objections to her bearing specific titles remain strong. > A little while back, someone wrote the list asking if anyone knew what a > "Morganatic Marriage" was. > In today's PANTAGRAPH newspaper from Bloomington, Illinois dated January 24, > 2004 there is a trivia column called Grab Bag. > It had this to say about Morganatic Marriages: > > A Matrimonial match-up of a person of royalty with a commoner. > It doesn't bestow royal rank on the "inferior" partner. > And doesn't entitle the "lowborn" mate to inherit royal property. > > The word "Morganatic" comes from a Latin phrase meaning "marriage with morning > gift". > > Marie in Illinois > > > ==== ILPEORIA Mailing List ==== > Visit the Peoria County ILGenWeb Home Page! > http://www.usgennet.org/~ilpeoria/index.html > > ==== ILPEORIA Mailing List ==== Search this list's archived messages! http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl

    3. Hello Virginia, Could not make any connection with your Collins. My Collins was a Irish Catholic immigrant who migrated straight to Peoria co., Illinois and died there. I am sending you a short paragraph about her family.....below. I would guess from your Collins first name that he was a Protestant....am I correct? Irish Protestants were rare, so that should make it easier for you to find out more about him. Good Luck, Marie in Illinois Descendants of Adelia/Della (T63) Collins Generation No. 1 1. 3. A little while back, someone wrote the list asking if anyone knew what a "Morganatic Marriage" was. In today's PANTAGRAPH newspaper from Bloomington, Illinois dated January 24, 2004 there is a trivia column called Grab Bag. It had this to say about Morganatic Marriages: A Matrimonial match-up of a person of royalty with a commoner. It doesn't bestow royal rank on the "inferior" partner. And doesn't entitle the "lowborn" mate to inherit royal property. The word "Morganatic" comes from a Latin phrase meaning "marriage with morning gift". Marie in Illinois
