I believe Charleston was either what is now either Brimfield or Elmwood--I need to check in my notes for sure. Which I will do if you don't get any other reponses sooner than I can get back to you Also--a while back I had asked the same about Summit and noone seemed to have the answer. I happened to find it by chance in a newspaper column of the 1920's. Apparently Douglas, which is just west of Yates City in Knox county was originally called Summit At 05:12 PM 8/29/99 -0500, you wrote: >Hello: > >Has there ever been a town called Charleston in Peoria County? I don't know if E.C. Burhans is any relation. Burhans is the adopted name. She and her brother were adopted by Dilazon Burhans in 1925. I am trying to find out who their birth parents were. Her brother Frank was born in St. Louis but both were raised in Peoria. In 1941 Kathryn was living at 412 Sixth Street. In 1938 they were living at 813 Fifth Street (according to SS info). This is my "brick wall". The obit advice is a good idea. I will work on that for now. You might also check (if you can get there) the old city directories in the genealogy section of the Peoria Public Library. These list individuals and businesses. RE: BURHANS surname. Was this person any relation of E C Burhans, the surgeon? Bill in Denver
I should have mentioned to check with the Illinois Archives in Springfield for the incorporation of this company.
Try old telephone directories or street directories for Peoria. Possibly at the state library in Springfield.
If she was from the vicinity of Peoria, try some of the newspapers for obits. They should be on interlibrary loan from the state library in Springfield.
I have a Cecelia German who married Merle McGonagle. She died in 1930 and was of Princeville.
Does anyone have knowledge of a trucking firm in the Peoria area around the timespan of 1935-1950 or so? I am trying to locate information on a now deceased (in Michigan about 1958) family member who was employed at this company somewhere around this time. Relative's name is William Vernon CRANE. His twin brother, James Victor CRANE also was employed by this company doing lettering on the trucks before he passed away in 1969 in Peoria. Any information on either man would be appreciated. If you require further information, you may contact me direct if you wish. Thank you to anyone who will respond!
I am looking for information on Kathryn Louise Burhans. I believe she was married to Dudley Purtle. She was born 8/6/1925 and died 3/2/1991. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Rhonda
