    3. Carol ASHBY..... I was born in PEORIA in 1931, lived there through high school, returned after a NAVY tour. Regarding you questions.... the TB sanatorium was on the northeast side of Peoria past the upper free bridge/yatch club/ Murrison label factory. it was where the city bus turned around in 1947. near the current Galena Park nursing facility, where my brother is currently attended. It was not the poor house or the mental asylum. the "mental asylum" was located in the Bartonville area, To be exact "on the hill to the southwest side of Bartonville". Bartonville was about 1 mile south of the Peoria city limits. I still visit Bartonville/Peoria but have not checked the exact city limits, they may meet at the Kickapoo Creek. The mental health facility was closed several years about 20 perhaps. The records were transferred to the ZELLER mental health facility that is located on the northwest section of Peoria but still in the city. there were some farms on the west side of Peoria (toward FARMINGTON), ,just west of Belview Acres, that is now a county nursing facility. It is on joining property with a jail/correctional facility. Perhaps that was where the "poor farm" was. Sometimes they continue to utilize the property for the county. I hope this may help clear up some of the geography and the locations of some of the questioned areas. 2. I was born and raised in Farmington, IL, west of Peoria, and I had a great-aunt who died in the "Poor Farm". This place was on the new Peoria road, west of Peoria, close to where the airport is now. I believe that they eventually turned it into a nursing home. I remember visiting her once and she was in a large hospital ward with lots of beds. I guess it was called the Peoria Poor Farm. Maybe this might be of some help. Marilyn ([email protected])

    2. Hello I missed much of the discussion about the asylums and recently began to wonder if that could be where an illusive GGGrandmother may have vanished to. Ann PURCELL (Ann McGEE>RIDGEWAT>PURCELL) was yet living in 1880 according to the Peoria County history book I photocopied from, however, she appears to have vanished from the earth as far as censuses and death records and cemetery inscriptions go. She lived part of her life in Marshall County when married to John RIDGEWAY and to Edward PURCELL, but apparently went back to Peoria County in her later years. I now wonder if she contracted tuberculosis during those last years, and spent them in the asylum. I've spent years trying to find her grave (she was born about 1807 give or take 10 years). If anyone has access to asylum records, would you kindly take a look for Ann Purcell for me? Thank you very much. Carol Ashby

    3. Hello I lived in Peoria all my life til 18 years ago, I do not ever remember Peoria being refered to as Ft Clark. There is some one at the Peoria Journal Star newspaper that does the history of Peoria, and he may have some information regarding the courthouse, I do not think he could help with family names. Look up PJStar.com and check the contact list for Bill Adams, Bill might be able to tell you about the courthouse. I do no that a new court house was built in the late 1950's or early 60"s I wish you luck Carol

    3. I am looking for information on Fort Clark that was apart of Peoria County, Ill. This area later became Peoria, Il. My GGG grandfather died there in between Dec. 1836/7 of May. He was found died in his room. I am looking for information on the Graves link to the Fort Clark area. His name was Rufus Milo Messenger and he was married to Eliza Messenger (Elizabeth Ann Barnes) they had two children Edwin Milo and Chauncey Monroe Messenger, Chauncey was 3 years old when his father died. Eliza remarried in June 1837. Listing of death notice or grave that maybe at this area of the Fort. I know that he help build the County Court house with Brother-In-law Clark W. Stanton he is listed in the history of Peoria County as a Township Governing list the area of Peoria. Rufus may have worked at the Fort Clark Mills. He was a carpenter and was a builder along with Clark W. Stanton. Can anyone in Peoria County help me with this!? Rose Mitcham

Thank you for your interest and if I find out anything I will certainly let you know Again Thank you so much Carol Barthell Hartman

    3. Dear List, I know a Dan Barthell, originally of Peoria, in a professional capacity. He is presently a librarian at the Gelman Library, George Washington University, in Washington, D.C. I don't think he is the same Dan Barthell as this one, for he would be slightly younger and would not be described as a big guy. He did, however, attend Catholic parochial schools. 2. Hello again Carol: I could well be "misremembering" the stature of Dan Barthell. I am getting better at that task with age. The occupation Librarian seems to ring a tiny bell in my cranial cavity, but I do not recall where he was (although a university connection also sounds faintly familiar). I'd kinda like to bet it is the same one (how about $ Cyberbucks). I doubt there were many Dan Barthells in Peoria about 60 years ago. Dan could be slightly younger than my brother, but I do not think much. I'd say follow up on Dave's hunch and possible link. Bill in Denver

    2. Hello Carol: What little I have is really no help, probably. Not long after the Ice Age, I lived in Peoria. My brother went to school with a Dan ( I suppose Daniel, really ) Barthell. This was at St. Mark's grade school and Spalding Institute (high school - now defunct). A BIG guy, thick glasses, bright guy; his family lived in West Peoria. He and my brother were buddies in grade and high school as I recall. I do not know anything of the family's whereabouts, livelihood, existence now. Dan's age, if still alive, would be about 62. My brother might know something. There is only one Barthell (two l's) in current Peoria phone book. Barthell, Bobby 825 E Paris Ave., Peoria Hgts, IL 61603 309-685-1718 and two persons with one "l": Barthel, Gregory 1210 Black 309-347-8147 Barthel, Richard L. 6501 Greenmnt Rd Peoria, IL 61614 309-691-5577 I suppose it would be worth it to make a call to the first one. 2. Shirley Milligan
    3. Searching for information about death of Aielt van Boningen who died in the Peoria area after 1866. Probably before 1885.... Aielt was born in Canum, Ostfriesland, Germany and probably immigrated about 1866. Was there a German language newspaper in the area? Thanks for any help. Would be happy to pay someone for a look-up. In fact, would appreciate ANY other van Boningen, van Bohning, van Boening or variants without the "van" information. Another branch of the family came/and stayed in Illinois too. Thanks Shirley

    3. Hello Roger Scott: You mentioned Mark Essex, plus Earl & Judy Essex in WA. While my original query related to John Essex and others in the very early 1800's, we know that some of our Essex relations moved to the west coast. One for sure was Frank (Franklin) Essex, b 1879, IA. Frank had one son we know of by the name of Howard, b. 1820. I think they first went to CA, but we haven't heard from then since the 1940's, although Frank was in LA in 1952. It would be interesting if your people were from this line. Let me know what you think. Jack Hicks Rosetown, Saskatchewan [email protected]
