Hi list, Does anyone have any information about the Streetcar Company that was running in the 1890's. I have two ancestors who were motormen on the streetcars. This posting has many links to my search for my sweetheart's family. #1, his father J. Victor Crane worked at CAT from 1934 to his retirement in March 1962. At the moment, I don't have the department that he worked in. His SS application dated Nov 1936 was typed in by CAT office to create a form. Then the original message from Kevin Miller states that a "Mary Ann Lee may have later married a Robert William Stewart" - my sweetheart's mother was a Stewart and there were Bobby Stewarts all over the family. I am not sure if this particular one is family, but believe there is more than a coincidence. So, I would like to ask both Russell Zears and Kevin Miller to elaborate on their connections and statements, if at all possible !!!!!! In the meantime, I will contact family and see if I can be more confident on my information. ----- Original Message ----- From: Russell ZEARS <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2000 1:57 PM Subject: Re: [ILPEORIA-L] OGDEN's in Peoria > My father and I worked at CAT ....my father was there from about 1940 till > his death about 1976... he was in electrical maintenance..... he had a > friend OGDEN.... Does anyone have any information on Jasper Newton Ogden and his wife, Mary Anna Lee Ogden from Peoria? They had 2 sons: Joseph Armstrong Ogden (born 5/10/1898 in Peoria) and James Newton Ogden (born 5/12/1902 in Peoria). May have also had a son, Robert Earl Ogden (born 1/15/1909 in Peoria). All three worked at Caterpillar in November, 1936. Mary Ann Lee may have later married a Robert William Stewart. Thank you. Kevin Miller
Sandy, I bought my "Peoria King Schwinn" bike from the VOSS bicycle shop in the early 50s. Bill and ED were brothers who ran the place. The business name was VOSS BROTHER'S BICYCLE. I can still see the inside of the place. FYI both brothers were active in Peoria Shrine. They had jazzed up bikes with odd shaped (eccentric) wheels that they rode in the Shrine Clown group as keystone Cops, in the Shrine Parades. One was a unicycle. These are a few very vivid childhood recollections. I have no idea what kind of information Peoria Shrine has or is willing to give out. I"m sure that there is mention of the business in the Peoria City Directories (which are on film in Peo. Lib and also Library of Congress). Sorry I can't offer more. Hope this Helps Bill (PHS '57) At 06:16 AM 5/19/00 -0700, you wrote: >I am looking for information on the VOSS family. Edwin and Hazel Voss >owned a bicycle and Motorcycle shop before the second WW. Went to school with a VOSS in 1973 at Spalding Institute/Academy of Our Lady. Might try yearbooks at Peoria Public Library.
Greetings: Re: VOSS There are 18 entires in the current Peoria phone directory for VOSS, from Anthony to Walter. Check an online phone directory for these individuals. My weakening memory tells me I went to high school with one VOSS in the mid 1950s. Bill in Denver
Sandy, Not much of a clue, but I seem to recall my father (1917-1992) speaking about a Gene or Eugene Voss, possibly a high school friend, of Peoria. This would have been in the mid-1930s. I know this is far fetched also but Voss is not a real common name. Do you know if Robert could have moved to the Los Angeles area? As a child there was a real close friend of my parents (Rose and Richard Richardson) in LA whose name was Bob Voss. I have a special reason for trying to locate this family. -----Original Message----- From: David L. In response to inquiry by Pat Thomas, my 1850 Peoria Co. census shows the following on Metcalf. City of Peoria Jas Metcalf 25 m teamster DE Rachel 26 f NJ William 4 m IL Edwin 2/12 m IL Hope this helps Donna
Does anyone have info on Edward and Grace Hedges Fleming from Peoria? Grace died in about 1962 in Peoria. She was a police matron for a number of years. Thanks! Kevin Miller
I am looking for Edwin Metcalf, he married Sarah Major in 1876 in Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa and apparently they were in Colorado by 1877 when their son was born. I have not had much luck finding Edwin except for the marriage but an elderly aunt thinks he lived in Peoria county. He could have met his wife in Illinois, she went to school in Galesburg according to her obituary. I wondered if anyone that has an index for the 1850,1860 or 1870 Peoria county census, would check for me, he should have been born about 1850 according to his marriage certificate. If I know that he is in the census and what township, I can order the census from there, but didn't want to check the entire census for one name. Thanks for any help. Judy, This is getting more confusing by the minute! My husband's great grandfather was Albert ADAMS who married Agnes A HALL 8 Jan 1871. This Albert ADAMS was born 2 Oct 1841 and had a twin brother Alfred. They were the twin sons of William ADAMS and Martha CHICHESTER. Albert (1841) was in the CW, Co. K 11th ILL. To make it more confusing, Albert also had twin sons named Albert and Alfred. With a name like ADAMS, why did they have to have so many with the same first names????? Especially, like William and James!! Oh, my aching head!!!! But, we do have the same Albert on our lists. That much we know. Pat
OK, first I will say we have too many James' and Albert Adams in IL. I thought it was bad in the later generations, my grandfather is Albert K., his father James R., his father Albert M., his father James A. and now who is the father of James A? After reviewing all my data here is what I have: My James A. Adams was b. 1831, IL. (1860 census Knox Co.). He had 6 children, one was Albert W. b. 1855. Living near James in 1860 was Alfred Adams b. 1833, IL. He had several children, one was James W. Living in Peoria, IL. 1850 was Albert Adams. This guy I believe was also in the Civil War, Co. K 11th ILL. Because he is listed on 1850 index and in CW I believe him to be born between 1830 and 1840. I have found a James Adams in Peoria, IL. in 1840, Harkness Twp. living near Leonard Jones who daughter married my James A. Adams. Since my James A. was only 9 yrs in 1840 this would lead me to believe that James Adams of Peoria, IL. is someone older then the three men listed above. Could James Adams of 1840 Peoria be the father of James A. b. 1831, Alfred b. 1833, and Albert b. 1830-1840? If so, then where does William and his family fit into this. This Albert and Alfred were for sure not born before 1841. Could William and James be brothers? Often they name their children after brothers and fathers and often cousins have the same names. I hope to learn more once I get actual copies of census records for the Peoria Co. Adams'.
