Edith Clukey was married to Albert C. Schneider in 1904 per my sketchy info. Albert is a brother to my Matilda Anna Schneider. Re: Peoria Courthouse: WGorman: Thank you so much for all this information. I do plan to stay all night in Peoria so I think I will start at the Courthouse and go to that "special" Library and go from there. My family settled in Peoria. Steinberg's and Koerner's. Rodd: I will probably be able to help you. Again, I will try my best. Lois Illinois
Yes, I will. I will let everyone know how my visit went. I may be going back again in late August when my cousin from Washington visits and we work on our family. Lois Illinois
SORRY about earlier posting - the bad typing! pffoce is an unrecognizable typo which should have read office Proof read, Bill, proof read! Bill in Denver
Re: Peoria Co. Courthouse: There is very little at the Peoria Co. pffoce that you may look at yourself. They do have marriage books, but they give little information. However, they give a book and page number where a staff member can find the actual record. They also have books containing the Peoria Township census for 1888 and 1899 which they will let someone look at. They are friendly and helpful, but "rules is rules" and there is no way around them. At the Peoria Public Library, on the other hand, they have old newspapers way back (on microfilm), which anyone may use on premises. They also have many old census records on microfilm available. Often there is a volunteer from Peoria Co. Genealog. Society in the Genealogy room at the library who will be able to help direct you to various resources. Note, however, their summer hours are significantly reduced (I believe they close at 6pm on weekdays and are closed on Sat. as well as Sun. for the summer). You might want to call ahead for summer hours. Peoria Co. Clerk: 309-672-6059 Peoria Public Library: 309-497-2000 They also have an index on obits in a card file in a wooden cabinet, which I have sound of little use personally, but it may be a huge help to someone. Look up person by name and it gives date, name of paper and page number where the obit can be found. But this is only for certain years, a limiting factor. I hope this helps someone ........ or many. Bill in Denver
I was able to read and photocopy microfilmed probate records in the Peoria Court House. Also, I was able to look at the books of land records but found them more difficult than most because of the ways they are kept. Bernice in VA

I can't promise that I can do this, but I plan one day next week to go to the Courthouse in Peoria to look up information on my family. No definite day right now has been planned, but if I go can you give me more information to go by? Let me list what I feel you have given: Sophia Holcomb born in 1827 in Peoria and her father's name was Benjamin Holcomb. Do you have mother's name? Any month? I have never been to the Peoria courthouse. I am assuming I will be able to look at the old books and get dates, names, doctors name, etc. I know it is like that in Paxton, IL at the courthouse. I plan to call Peoria and find out just what I can and cannot get. I may need to go to the library also, but would prefer getting all the info from the courthouse. Lois Illinois
Would you let the list know if they actually let you look at records at the Peoria County Courthouse please. Hi Bonnie: Are you referring to the book "Holcomb the Nation Builders" ??? If you are, I looked at it. Nothing on my Holcombs Which Holcombs are you with?? Thanks Rodd
Hi Rodd, I have Holcombs in my family too. There is a huge book called The Holcomb Book in the local genealogy library. I don't know the author's name but perhaps if you checked at your library they may be able to help you. It has loads of Holcombs. Bonnie Baetz
Hi: Can somebody who will be going to the library in Peoria, check to see if there is any sign of the Holcomb family around 1827. I have a biography of Henry Hull, from Boone Co. Iowa, which states that Sophia Holcomb was born in Peoria in 1827. Ben or probably (Benjamin) Holcomb is her dad. The Hull family might be around too. Thanks to who ever can check when they are at the library Rodd
I ordered the Family History Library Catalog CD for $5 on July 10 online. It arrived today. Believe me, it is worth $5. Here's a sample. You know those probate records you can't find or, um, can't seem to get the clerk to look for? The FHL has Logan County probate records 1855-1949 on microfilm, also wills 1855-1930, guardianship 1872-1963, naturalization 1859-1906. You can go to your local FHL and order them. The CD is the catalog of the library as of March. It costs $5.00 (U.S. funds) at Church distribution centers worldwide or can be ordered by phone at 1-800-537-5971. It can also be ordered on the Internet at http://www.ldscatalog.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=1632783& prmenbr=1402&CGRY_NUM=1440462&RowStart=1&LocCode=FH You need that whole address and I can't seem to make the whole thing clickable. http://www.familysearch.org is the basic address -- you can find it from there, just takes a bit more work. Sorry list.....I just sent a lengthy email, intending to send directly to the person and forgot to change the address from the list. Julie
Penny...I noted the name Innes/Ennis as one of your research names. Do you possibly have info on Rebecca who married (2nd husband) Benjamin COLE , in Rock Island. First husband was a SHANKS. Rebecca was the daughter of John ENNIS and Elizabeth ARMSTRONG... According to an ancestral file, Johns father was Thompson. John and Elizabeth were in Green Co, Ohio. Now..what I am looking for is more info on the movements of Rebecca and her sibblings...and where she first came in contact with Benjamin Cole. One of Rebecca 's children by SHANKS was born in Joliet, Illinois...over on the EAST end of the state of Illinois. Then, she moved to Rock Island, the very far west, where she actually married Benjamin Cole. I don't find Benjamin Cole in the 1840 Rock Island index...so, it appears he showed up about the same time maybe that Rebecca did. I am suspecting that it was probably from the Rock Island area as well and have reason to suspect why he might have been there. Now..just to confirm that and hopefully hook him up with the Joliet family there in 1850. Just to know where I am going with this.....in Joliet in 1850, is a Levi Cole , in his 80s living with a daughter. Also there...only about a page away, is my gg grandfather's family...Pierce B. Bissell. Levi Cole had first married a Lydia Pierce and they had a known daughter, Lydia, before his wife died. I suspect that Lydia might be Pierce's mother. So..how does that get to Benjamin Cole? Well...the marriage of Levi and Lydia was about two years before the daughter was born. There is ample room for Benjamin to have been his son, he is of the right age. Both were listed as coopers by trade in the 1850 census as well as Pierce Bissell also. Benjamin Cole, in 1850, is right in the middle of the area that Pierce Bissell bought land in Rock Island in 1839. He was absent for only 3 years....during his brief stay in Joliet...where he mysteriously moved his family in early 1850., after which, they moved right back to the same place in Rock Island, rebuying the same land. I have other data from previous places Levi Cole and his bunch had been...with Bissells (unfortunately unknown) and Pierces nearby to suggest I might be on the right road to connect the families...and possibly figure out the parentage of Pierce B. Bissell (born about 1816-20) Do you have any background on this Ennis /Innex bunch or their movements???? It might help me to nail down old Benjamin Cole. Also...do you have any info on any other of the Ennis family of Rock Island? Thanks for any help, Julie Bissell Tupker

Could someone on the list give me an idea of where I could find a newspaper obit for someone in May 1863? Also where is the best place to research persons known to have been in Peoria in the 1860's? Thanks for any help you can give me. M. M. Jones [email protected]
