    2. I'm also curious about street cars/trolley cars in Peoria at the turn of the century. My grandfather, Thomas LOWRY, was a streetcar conductor in Peoria at about that time. Thanks! Kevin

    3. Hi Everyone, Sorry, I have no information on trolley cars. All of the ancestors who wrote about life in Peoria County were farmers. There's lots of info about the prices of crops, cloth, acreage, etc. and the weather. Also info about when the major illnesses struck, scarlet fever, etc. Take care, Anita C. 3. Hi Charlotte, According to an old letter I have, dated July 8, 1855, from Peoria County, IL: "…The railroad runs through Chillicothe and it is doing a good business. Chillicothe is a growing fine. There is a twelve story besides a furniture store and tin shop. There is a new steam saw mill in there too that does first rate work and a carriage and wagon factory and lots of buildings going up all of the time. There is four trains of cars runs through there every twenty-four hours. They look very nice too agoing like thunder. Sometimes there is a string for a half mile long with an engine at each end pushing and pulling like Boston. We are agoing down to town tomorrow and take the children down and let them see the cars and town." Hope this helps, Anita C. 2. R & C MILLER
    3. I am trying to find any information on WELLS HICKMAN and MARY J. KING HICKMAN. They were married in Fulton County on February 12, 1866. They 'took in' and raised a baby boy named ALBERT MITCHELL MILLER who was born in Canton, Illinois on October 14, 1872. Unable to find any 'official' guardianship papers or birth records. I have checked at Fulton & McDonough Counties for these. WELLS and MARY J. HICKMAN moved to the Bushnell, Illinois area and that is where ALBERT MILLER was raised. Would like to find out if WELLS and MARY HICKMAN had any children of their own. WELLS HICKMAN b. d. 29 Dec 1922 at the age of 73 years BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C MARY J. HICKMAN b. d. 16 Nov 1933 in Walnut Grove, Illinois BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C in the same plot of the Bushnell Cemetery is : DAVID M. KING b. 1820 d. 28 Dec 1905 BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C NANCY KING b. 1830 d. 25 Feb 1905 BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C I believe that DAVID and NANCY are MARY J. KING HICKMAN's parents but have not found any 'official' proof. ALBERT MITCHELL MILLER married a GERTRUE MAE HAYWORTH CAIN and raised a family in the Bushnell, Illinois area. ALBERT MILLER is my husband's grandfather & I am trying to find out who ALBERT's parents/grandparents were. ALBERT's daughter ( who is 80 years old ) said that all the information that she ever knew was that ALBERT's mother died when he was born and that his father was a Doctor and died a few years after he was born. ALBERT MILLER passed away on September 14, 1955 and is buried in the KING plot in the Bushnell Cemetery. I find this unusual in that he is laid to rest in the KING section. This would be the maiden name of the woman who raised ALBERT. I wonder if ALBERT was born to a sister of MARY J. KING HICKMAN ? I would certainly appreciate if anyone would have any possible leads for me to check out. Thanks ! Carolyn J. Miller [email protected]

    2. The address for the courthouse is: 324 Main Street Peoria, IL 61602-1319 Go into Yahoo and search for directions. I think that is how I went into it. Its www.yahoo.com. You can get direction from your street and town to the street address and town of the courthouse. Also the library is two blocks from the courthouse which is: 107 NE Monroe Peoria, IL 61602-1021 Tel: 309-672-8569 The library has a parking area but you have to feed the meter every two hours. Got a parking ticket the first day. I parked right on Main Street the second day in front of the court house. Much easier than walking two blocks every two hours. If you get there right at 8:00 am when they open there are plenty of parking places in front of the court house or along side. Be careful of their one-way streets. Those meters in front of the courthouse are also every two hours. They are really nice people there. Lois Illinois

    2. Hi Lois: Thanks for looking. The spelling is probably Holcomb, but you never know?? Benjamin might have been married in Peoria, before Sophia was born in 1827. There might be a Henry W. Holcomb, born 1830. Don't know where. Could be the name Hull, lurking around there. Where is the courthouse, and is there a place to park?? Thanks again Rodd

    1. [ILPEORIA-L] Holcomb - Peoria - Kendall/Marten - Peoria
    2. Rodd and BBrown: I have listed Rodd's first and BBrown's after. Please remember I watched for Holcomb in the year 1825 and for Kendall/Marten I watched for marriage 1904/1906 and birth 1907. All the others are what I found as I glanced for all my names. Hopefully, I did not miss any of the dates you asked for. Below is what I found. I can recheck when I go back. I need to have you know that you might find lots more names for your family than what I found. Sorry I was not at the library as much as I was at the Courthouse. Birth records in a book only went back to 1850. There is an archive down stairs in the courthouse that I did not have time for. My cousin and I are going back the last of August sometime. They are wonderful people at this office. Everyone that cannot see the complete record with dates, etc., is always disappointed. The only thing I could look at was a name in several old books. There is a form you can fill out and it costs $5.00 for them to copy the record and send. Also, they can do a search for you for $7.00 and additional copies would be $4.00. No Checks! Cash or Money Order only. The office address is: JoAnn Thomas Peoria County Clerk Room 101 - Courthouse Peoria, IL 61602-1368 Tel: (309) 673-8398 Here goes: Marriage: Book #1 1825-1855 Benjamin Holcomb Page 10 Benjamin Holcomb Page 11 Birth: Book #E 1895-1902 Chas F Holcomb Page 154 (circled is an "M") Book#F 1902-1904 Mildred Holcomb Page 141 Death: Book #3 11-1-1899- Johnson Holcomb Page 149 10-22-1902 Book #7 1910-1915 Mary Holcomb Page 175 Also, would Holcombe be your name also? If so: Birth: Book #E 1895-1902 Howard Cecil Holcombe Page 67 Lee E. Holcombe Page 67 Book #H 1907-1910 Walter Holcombe, Jr. Page 250 Death: Book #3 1899-1902 Charles G. Holcombe Page 5 Book #7 1910-1915 Barton A. Holcombe Page 109 If you would like for me to keep your name at the top of my head (difficult but I'll try), I will write down anything I find again and let you know. Let me know though if the name could be spelled both ways and you are interested in it both ways. I guess the birth of Sophia Holcomb would be downstairs in the archives. I will keep this paper at the top so I can see if she is listed in 1827. I don't know for instance: Benjamin Holcomb's marriage date. It could be from 1825 to 1855. The only way you can find out is request the copy. Hope this helps you. _____________________________________________________________ BBrown: Goodness, there were lots of Martens and lots of Kendall's. (she is a sister of my grandfather, John Ahrens) was married to Frederick Faber about 1893 (they are not listed in the marriage yet) and they lived in Peoria. He died in 1915 and she died in 1935. Their daughter, Hester died in 1943 and all are buried in Springdale. Hester's obituary mentioned cousins: Mrs. Giles Keithley, Arthur Faber and Eugene Harach. Does anyone know of these people or their descendents. Would like to contact any relatives that might have pictures and family information. Thanks for any help. Dee

    3. I know a lot of us have ancestors who were in Maryland at some point in time so this may be useful. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2000 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - Archives of Maryland Online The State of Maryland has an ambitious plan to make more than one million historical documents available online. According to the Web site at: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/megafile/msa/speccol/sc2900/sc2908/html/in dex.html, these are documents that "form the constitutional, legal, legislative, judicial, and administrative basis of Maryland's government." Some of these documents will be of interest to genealogists. Original documents have been scanned and are available as TIFF images. One example is Volume 3, "Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1636-1667," which is indexed by both name and topic. You can see this at: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/megafile/msa/speccol/sc2900/sc2908/000001/ 000003/html/index.html Some transcriptions of marriage records are available at: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/stagser/s1500/s1527/html/ssi1527.html. Helpful information, such as finding aids and descriptions of microfilmed records, can be found at: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/refserv/html/comarria.html. The Archives of Maryland Web site appears to be just getting started; a small number of records are available online today, but that number is certain to grow. Cheryl Rothwell [email protected]
