I would also like the address for the Peoria County Genealogical Society, please. Thanks! Kevin Miller
Good morning -- This is the first time for me to post to this list. I am looking for the web site address of the PEORIA COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY in order to purchase a book. Also, I am researching all DERRY names from this area. Several branches of this family from the VA/PA area moved out west during the middle 1800's. Thank you. Joan Derry [email protected]
Karen: Thankyou, Roger
Roger, If you like I will scan the picture and post it to my web site so that you can download it. I also have a later picture of John Buchele and fire fighters sitting on top of their fire truck, possibly circa 1930-1940. I will post when I have the pictures uploaded to the site later this week. I am trying to identify a photograph of a horse drawn fire wagon which has the following imprinted on its carriage: "S.B. Chemical No.1" The photograph includes four uniformed and mustached gentlemen with a dog :) Would anyone have information about S.B. Chemical? Was it the name of the fire carriage, or possibly the name of a company with a volunteer fire force? My husband's grandfather, John L. BUCHELE, was a fireman for the Peoria Fire Department during the first part of the 20th century. He was the Fire Chief during the 1930s & 1940s. The photograph described above was in the possession of his daughter, Catherine Buchele Zimmerman. The picture obviously predates John Buchele's time with the fire department. Unfortunately, there is no identification on the back of the photograph and so I do not know the names of the men in the picture. they were in use in 1940s, while I was in high school.. it was fun to go to the rear and yank the power feed of and loose power .... the conductor had to go around to the rear and pull the power arm down and reseat it on the power line. The end of one line went way out (ha ha) to the stadium that is now called WAR MEMORIAL DR. It was a dirt street then. RUSS [email protected] Never be afraid to try something new. ILGenWeb has a great of Civil War information available online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/index.htm The State Archives has the Civil War database online at http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/datcivil.html Now there is another source, the actual images of the War of the Rebellion and Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion are online free. [If the URLs don't work today try tomorrow -- when these announcements are made the sites are frequently overwhelmed.] The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2000 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. History buffs and genealogists alike are familiar with the "War Of The Rebellion Journal." This is a compilation of the official records of the Union and Confederate armies published in 1880 through 1901 under the direction of the Secretary of War. The entire publication was published as a set of 71 volumes containing tens of thousands of pages of information. This is probably the most detailed information about the American Civil War ever published. Now the entire series is available online. The Cornell University Library Making of America (MOA) Collection is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The online collection is extensive and one of the latest additions is the "War Of The Rebellion". I spent some time looking at this online collection. Each page has been scanned as a graphic image. You can read the pages online or print them on your own printer. The pages that I printed on an ancient LaserJet printer looked much clearer than the typical photocopies made at a library. The Web site contains only graphic images. The books have not been converted to text. The only index available is the original index published with the collection in 1901. This index is available online, but it, too, is available as a collection of graphic images. The "War Of The Rebellion" is the major reference for the most troubled time in American history. The online version will be a major resource for historians and genealogists alike. You can view the online version of the "War Of The Rebellion" at: http://library5.library.cornell.edu/moa/ "The Official Records of the Unites States and Confederate Navies" is another great resource. This 30-volume reference is available at: http://moa.cit.cornell.edu/MOA/MOA-JOURNALS2/OFRE.html Cheryl Rothwell [email protected]
I'm sorry that I can't give you much information. I do know that the Fort Clark Horse Railway had offices at N. 1600 Perry Street, Peoria. John H. Hall was president and H. W. Wells was secretary. I have letters from John Hall to his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary A Hall, dated 1881 and 1884. I don't know how long it had been in existence at that time.
