Is there a Steve Slaughter from Peoria on this mailing list ? If so, would he please contact me at melvinslane1@insightbb.com ? I understand he might be able to help me save/protect a family cemetery. Mel Slane Peoria, IL
I know of an old private family cemetary in a county near Peoria that got bulldozed a few years back after the farm changed ownership. It is not supposed to happen, but it does happen. There had been no burials since pre-1900 and the farm had changed ownership multiple times before the newest owners took over. I suspect only 3 or 4 or 5 people even knew it existed. So ... if you know of an old cemetary that might be in peril, don't assume it is safe. Make the proper authorities in the county aware of the cemetary and get it listed, registered or whatever. Lobby for a fence around it and even a sign to be posted at the entrance. Bob
I don't think they can do that under current Illinois law. The person in charge of cemeteries is the Comptroller. I'm having a lot of trouble with state web pages today as new people take over. The Illinois Cemetery Care Act is 55 ILCS 65 which you should be able to download at http://www.comptroller.state.il.us/office/cemeterycare/cemcare.html I think you are looking for the Cemetery Protection Act which is part of that download [although not at the page numbers indicated on the front page]. Can anyone tell me who I would contact, if indeed there is any such agency, to "register" an old private graveyard with the State or County to keep it from being plowed under one day by the current owners of the land ? My family the Slanes started a graveyard on what was their property from about 1835 until maybe 1860 or so. At that point, it belonged to the family of one of the Slane wives, the LaFollettes, who owned it up until about 2001. Now, I'm concerned that the current owners might not honor their obligation to keep it intact and allow access. The "Slane" cemetery is located just off Route 8 about 4 miles West of Edwards Illinois. It's also about 1/2 mile Southwest of Combs Cemetery across the Kickapoo Creek in Rosefield Township, Peoria County, Illinois. It's fenced in currently because of major damage that was done by a farmer in the 1960s. It's in overgrown condition with only two graves (3 people) current visible (the remainder of the gravestones were pretty much destroyed in the 60s incident) One of the gravestones is a double sided stone for my grgr-gr-gr-grandfather Benjamin F Slane (1798-1875) and his wife Delilah Cheshire Slane (1800-1839) and the other is for the last Slane land owner Samuel Slane (1810-1852). Family records indicate at least 16 people were buried there, with the possibility of 6-10 more. Some of the family names buried there in addition to SLANE are LAFOLLETTE, RACE, GILLHAM and SNYDER for sure and possibly BINNEGAR. Mel Slane Peoria, IL
Sunday Dear Rhonda, I received your note last week. My mother went to Manual about that time, and so I forwarded it to her. I live in Holland, MI and my parents now live in Oshkosh, WI by my sister. I just talked to Mom and she has found a picture of your dad. She said he was probably a year ahead of her. She has it copied and will mail it to me next week. When it comes, I can either copy it here on my copier and e-mail it to you and/or just send it onto you in the mail if you give me your address. Re: DIMON Check out the LDS website www.familysearch.org Go to 1880 U.S. Census Fill out the form and submit. You'll get hundreds of hits (mostly similar spellings, some not so similar) but there are a bunch of DIMON family members listed there. Bill In Denver
Listers: I am searching for descendants of Samuel and Nancy DIMON. Samuel was a son of Jonathan DIMON and Ann JENNINGS of Seneca Co, NY. Samuel and wife Nancy moved to Peoria Co, IL about 1845, and had the following children: DIMON 1 Helen b. 1835; d. 1893 at Peoria; m. Henry O. YOUNG 2 Dewit b. 1838 3 Jonathan b. 1841; d. 1914 at Kickapoo, Peoria Co. 4 Jacob b. 1843; d. 1899 Peoria Co. 5 Emma b. 1846; d. bef. 1893; m. ( ) WILSON 6 Frances b. 1849; d. bef 1893; m. ( ) EDWARDS 7 Eugene b. 1851 8 Isabell b. 1853; m. David H. PARKS 9 Lafayette b. 1855 Are any of these names familiar ones to other researchers? I have information that I will be glad to exchange. Kathryn Jennings
Rhonda: If you don't get a response, you might try the Reference Desk at Peoria Public Library. I know they have some yearbooks, but believe they are now discretely stored in back because people have been ripping them off. But a staff member would check and see if they have those years. Are you any relation to the late E.C.Burhans, surgeon in Peoria? Peoria Public Library 107 N E Monroe Peoria IL 61602 (309) 497-2000

Ken, Thanks for checking for me, I have gone through Woodford co., pretty thoroughly and they haven't turned up. Seems amazing that they just disappear between NY in 1852 and 1880 in Kansas. I know they are somewhere !! There were Kuhns earlier in Woodford County, IL, but cannot find the names of John and Katrina. There were also Volzes in Woodford County, Il in the 1800's. Ken in CA
Nancy, thank you so much for looking this up for me. Unfortunately they don't seem to fit. John and Katherine (Katrina) were both born in Germany, but in different provinces. They met on a ship from Liverpool to NY. I can't figure out where they were in 1860 and 1870. According to the births of their children and a history of Sedgewick Co., Kansas, they lived in Illinois for 15 years. That would be from abt. 1855-1870. I can see where they might have been missed in a census, but not two. Anyway, will keep at it, thanks again, I appreciate your time. They should have a daughter Clara and dau. Emma. John and Katrina came to US on same ship in 1852, married in 1854 in NY City. and came west to IL right after the marriage. Haven't found them in 1870 census, but in 1880 and 1900 they are in Wichita kansas. 1910 they are in Oregon, where they died in 1915, 1919 Any help or suggestions sincerely appreciated, Thank you, Sharron
