Its early in the morning. :o) I guess the real point to keep in mind is that this mailing list is archived on RootsWeb. So, if it is not something you would place on a web page because it is a direct copy from a publication that has a copyright on it, do not place it on any RootsWeb mailing list. However, something like a list of 10 names from cemetery publication X which has 1000 names in it falls under fair use. Think of it this way... if you were still in school and its a report you are writing, would your teacher give you an F for copying word for word from a book? If so please do not send it to a RootsWeb mailing list because if discovered by someone with money to spare, many folks could be involved in a lawsuit. Your messages do not disappear after being sent to everyones mailbox. They are archived and searchable from http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Information directly from a census microfilm, items published 75 years ago, etc.. are fair game even if someone out there is selling their own transcription of the same thing. They have a copyright on their item, but not the original census. >I guess I have a seen it happen on all lists I am on. But I just want to make sure I am doing it right. By the way, What is "Flaming"? I heard it mentioned, and was wondering what it was? Say I send a message that says Abe Lincoln is working at McDonalds. You think I am an idiot for making such a statement, and you would be right. Flaming is sending a public message to the list telling me I am an idiot, where to find the guys with white coats etc. If you have to send a message like that, do it in private mail or be ready to get flamed yourself. :o) The sad thing is, I have seen many nice folks who just had a bad day flame someone, then the entire list gets mad at them and they have to pull teeth to get an answer to even the simplest question. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Illinois USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilgenweb The Illinois Civil War Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw Illinois Ancestor Registry http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilgenweb/queries Cook County IL, USGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcook/cook.htm Stone Cnty MO., USGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~mostone/stone.htm Barry Cnty MO., USGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/barry.htm
