The following affidavit concerned my great grandfather, Jonathan Long, who was trying to get more money from the government for his service in the Civil War. His claim was physical impairment. Vols Personally came before me, a Notary Public in and for aforesaid County and State, John R. Rogers, aged 46 years and Valentine A. Paul, aged 51 years citizen, of the Town of Lanark (?), County of Carroll State of Illinois, well known to me .... I am well acquainted with said Jonathan Long and have known him well for more than twenty five years last part from the time he was discharged about the last of June 1865 until about 1868 said Long lived near Shannon in said Carroll County and from about 1868 to 1873 he lived in the same town in which I lived and from about 1873 to 1878 said Long lived in the Town of Elkhorn Grove in said Carroll County and from about 1878 to the present time said Long has resided at Pine Creek in Ogle County. These places are all in the vicinity of my home. Said Long has complained of Rheumatism and Heart disease Ever since his said discharge. I do not think that he is able to perform manual labor more on account of said diseases. Said John R. Rogers and said Valentine A. Paul have been residence of the town of Brookville for many years.
