This was a different Martin Slifer, 2nd cousin to the one under discussion, 10 years older and already married by 1850. He appears in the 1850 census as the head of household #486 on page 35 of ED 2, with his first wife, Ruhanna Finefrock, 2 small children and his widowed mother, Elizabeth [Long] Slifer. Ruhanna died in 1855 and Martin married Clara Ellen Shaffer in 1857. This was definitely NOT the Martin Slifer who was listed in the 1850 census in household # 985 on page 188 of ED 1 headed by William Smith. The older Martin Slifer was the son of Nathaniel Slifer (ca1795-ca1740) and Elizabeth Long (1794-1862). There has been deep research on the Long family which leaves no doubt as to this assignment. Nathaniel was the son of John Slifer III (1767-1836) who was the son of John Slifer II (1743-1822), the connection to the younger Martin Slifer. Before we have any more confusion, there were two more related Martins born in the 1840's.
