Darlene, I belong to Ancestry.com and can do lots of searches, soundex, first letters of a name, etc. Here's some more after Roger's email, the Hawk family comes into play as well? John ON the 1870 in Kossuth Co. Iowa, I didnt' include a servant in the household, Charles Hawk 10, Servant Illinois and the next door neighbors, Nathan B. Hawk 32 Maine Eve E. 24 Wisc Effie W. 11 Iowa Leroy A. 3 ? Iowa
Right you are! Research of Levi and Lydia Dietrich turns up a skeleton in their closet. I was visiting with a newly found "cousin" and she confirmed that Charles Hawk was more than just a servant. Charles had stated on the marriage registry ( when he wed Addie Heiter) that his father was Daniel Hawk and his mother's maiden name was Dietrich. (Daniel was married to Rebecca Grove but she was back living with her Dad on the 1870 census and Daniel took off to NB all shortly before Charles was born. I found their divorce recorded in Franklin Co.NB) The Haugh(Hawk) and Dietrich farms were a couple of miles apart in Leaf River (1872 map) and I saw the farms on a recent visit to Ogle Co. In the 1860 census Hegins Twp. Schuylkill Co. PA the Deitrich's have a daughter named Pressilla age 6. In 1870,Prescilla is Cecelia and now 16. Later in life Prescilla is married to Henry Warner and living near her parents in Fenton IA. Through her sister's descendents, there is talk that Charles belonged to Pres. I found a newspaper article telling how ggggCharles died young with Typhoid Fever and the newspaper article said heand his family had been living on the Dietrich farm. Granny D bought his grave and in Granny Lydia's will she leaves money to Charles' two children(Not his wife. Cousin said she didn't like his wife) ....all that to answer the servant question! Now about Nathan Hawk..Is it just coinsidence that they are neighbors. The Hawk line I'm following came from PA and not Maine but I'll watch for the name Nathan to pop up again to suggest some relationship. Thanks for your help and continue your input especially if you find some civil war stuff. It's so great to see emails like this! Even if it isn't our own ancestor, it's such a good feeling when someone finds "somebody". Thanks for posting this!
