I got that list from the 1880 census. Roger may have more than I do. 2) Martin appears in the 1850 census in a household headed by a brother-in-law, William Smith, husband of Susan Slifer, married 5th August 1847. Another sister, Margaret [Slifer] Gantz, is listed in the same household, but her husband, Emanuel Gantz, is missing. I assume that he was in Illinois prospecting for new homes. All three moved to Ogle County soon after. 3) There is a bit of a mystery about Martin's ancestors. I have tentavely assigned him to Daniel Slifer, bn ca 1800 in Frederick County, MD, who has left very little in the way of personal records. This is based primarily on a coincedence of dates. Daniel married Ann Gantz on 10th November 1824 and Ann died 18th April 1840. In the course of 15 years they should have had a family, and this history brackets the known birth dates of Margaret, Susan & Martin quite nicely. There is no other pair of Slifer parents not accounted for in this era and area. There is, however, no solid evidence for this assignment. 4) Daniel was the son of Samuel Slifer (1770-1849) and Peggy Ferguson (1775-1830). Samuel was the son of John Slifer (1743-1822). John was probably the son of another John Slifer (1719-1767) who was born in Switzerland and lived at Coopersburg, PA.

Hi, I don't know if the following may be related to Joseph - Andrew could be a brother/cousin from the dates and places. Andrew Newcomer, born 25 Nov 1810 in Washington County, MD; married to Eliza Hamilton in 1834; died in Mt Morris, Ogle County, IL 20 May 1885. Andrew's parents were Emmanuel Newcomer and Catherine Funk. That's all I know but it might be a link to follow. I want to thank everyone for their responses to my request for the data on J. Wirtjes. I now have the information the book contained. Although it was not what I expected, it is very helpful. I truly appreciate the person who took his time to look it up and then explain it to me. The help and sharing on this list is so great. Many of my family lines have been unblocked by information posted here. Thank you all, Judi Wirtjes
Thank you all for your suggestions. Roger, yes I should join that list as many of the ancestors I search came from that area. Also, thanks for the e-mail address I will give it a try. It seems my best hope. Ann, thanks for the information on libraries with copies. Perhaps I will be able to get someone on staff to make a copy of that page. Ron, yes, some of the Wirtjes clan in my file ended up in Sac City. The name is only mine by marriage. My Wirtjes research is my husbands ancestors. It seems that if you run across a Wirtjes in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin or Michigan they are all related. William, I did try for an inter library loan. I was told that wasn't possible. I have also been told that the Mormon church genealogy library in Salt Lake has a copy and if I go to the local family history center I can fill out a form and in a few weeks I would receive a copy of that page. I have not ask them about this. The idea of waiting weeks when I have hunted for years for this link is almost more than I can stand. I was just hopeful that since Ogle county, Illinois had such a large percentage of German immigrants that someone would have picked up a copy back when they were new and only $40. Well, thanks again.
