Gail, I used to live in Rockford. I lived right by the Auburn Street bridge. My house was on the river there. Wow, I was raised (partially) in Rockford. My parents and family lived in Rockford, but because of problems, I spent a lot of time in Pine Creek & Polo & Dixon with my family. They have farms there. Of, course the Boone's tie in with 'ol Abe Lincoln and Eisenhower, and Eleanor Roosevelt and lest we forget 'ol Daniel himself. A little about myself. I was born in Rockford and my paternal grandparents came to the US in 1909 from Germany. My grandfather came first in January and went to Oregon, probably Rockvale Twp. to Jacob DeVries who was his uncle. Bryn, See it is a small world, not really. Dr. Kirkpatrick, a Vascular Surgeon, lives here in CG too. He graduated from West in 60 and I would have graduated from East in 60 but we moved to CO in the spring of 59. Spent a lot of my summers near Oregon where my great grandparents lived, near good old Blackhawk. I love that old statue, always wanted to go in and see all the pennies. Also, do you remember driving from Rockford to Oregon on Rt. 2 along the river. You used to see along the river doors that went into the ground or the banks and probably went to the houses, tunnels, and I remember hearing that that was where they kept the slaves during the day who were running to freedom and then back to the river at night. I used to think how I would like to go and check out one of those tunnels. We lived near the river in Grant Park.....out by the airport. We were never allowed near the river. My grandfather drowned in the river and his body was found out by the Cederquist farm past the airport. But, kids will be kids!!! What my mother doesn't know won't hurt her. Got to run.......memories, I love them...and I am sure on this list there will be a lot.
