To all, I apologize to all for my temper. Won't make any excuses, just thought I was about to lose what could be a valuable source of information. Its a sore subject but the one person who probably has what I need is not willing to share I hope I will only be able to use my sense of humor from now on. I believe I have a good one most of the time. Please forgive me. Linda

Really, So all this great information that I have researched and researched is useless to others unless it is requested. My goodness, what is this world comming to when a person spends hours and hours of their time and can't share it. Wow. Well, if any one needs the info, what do I do? There is soo much and it is soooo helpful. My heavens. I have, I would say, almost every name in the county. I have pulled so much information from the films I have looked through. I through my family records, I have a ton. What is a person to do? Help ? Here I was thinking I could be a huge help to some one and now it is dashed to junk. How came I help share all this good information. Boy, this e-mail sounds like a mess. Some one tell me what I can and can not do to help. Hello again, Ok, I got the official word from Susan. Copyrighted items must be 75 years or older. Sometimes 60 or 65 years old can slide by, but after that it gets touchy. If they are recently published sources, there may be small amounts such as what you would use in a school book report. This would fall under the fair use section of the laws and is allowed. I hope everyone understands and excepts these guidelines. Because we wouldn't want to put Rootsweb (the USGenWeb host) in the position of being held liable for something they didn't do. Now, lets get back to genealogy, have a nice evening! Kathy - Ogle County GenWeb Host http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilogle

Dear Gail and all, This is the policy of USGenWeb. However, the Ogle County Genealogical Society does have a voice if it is their books that are being copied to the list. Since this has created such a panic, I have put the quetion to Susan, the head of IlGenWeb. It will be her call. I will let you know what she says when I get a response. Sorry to cause so much frustration, but we will get this resolved. This is for Kathy, Ogle Co. GenWeb Host, What if one has done their own reading of the cemetery, gone to the courts houses and read the marriages, and read the census records; doesn't that give one the right to post info from those findings on these mail list? Just wondering!!! mr
Roger, On my DeVries I have a lot of them but have never been able to get any of them to respond to my snail mail. I realize that they are all up in years but I have a lot of the older DeVries that were here in the mid 1800's and I can't find a home for them. Also, does anyone on the list know how I can get ahold of Rev. DeWalt's son or do you know where I can purchase the book that was published on the Rev. diaries? I had heard that his son was teaching at the ASU but I need this confirmed...Thanks..... My feeling is the same as yours. The genealogy society in Ogle Co. should have nothing to do with a mailing list. They are connected as a link from the mail list to info and sources that are available in the county. The list is a place to discuss and exchange information. Dear Mary, MR, and all, Let me clarify this. The main concern is that we do not violate any copyright laws. Maybe if you read the rules set by USGenWeb that the lookups must follow, it will help you to understand. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilogle/lookups.htm Work you do yourself is fine. But if someone has books,(such as census, etc...), that have been purchased from the society or anywhere, USGenWeb states it will not tolerate copyright violations. And the society has made it clear to me that they want this rule upheld. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding and answers any questions. Thank you, Kathy - Ogle County GenWeb Host http://wwwrootsweb.com/~ilogle Jallen43 wrote: > > In a message dated 98-05-13 19:25:11 EDT, you write: > > << o: ILOGLE-L@rootsweb.com > > Dear Brian and all, > I appreciate your enthusiasm! Hi, We just went through this on another list and any records over 70 years old are records for public information. This means anything that is available out there to the public can be used. Information in published books can also be used but not the full context of the book. We had this checked out with an attorney. Every book that I have or anyone else has and does look-ups can share their information that is in the book. All this is doing is sharing what one has and nine times out of ten we all list our sources and page #'s where the source was found. Every list that I have been on if someone has vital records in book form they give the information out, the name of the book, the author, and the page number. You are not putting the whole book on the list but excerpts of the book that anyone can get if the go to the library and get it on library loan. I have even had information sent to me, copies of pages in a copyrighted book, that pertain to my family that the information came to me over a list. This is what genealogy is all about, sharing the information that you have found with others who are still searching. Bryn, I think that if you posted the information that you have access too and someone wants you to do a lookup in those books or CD's that would be safer than listing ALL the records and you an post them to the list so that everyone can see the reply as this list is set up to reply to the list rather than replying to the author. The reason for that is to try and bring everyone into the discussion and keep the list more interesting rather than replying to the specific person. You will notice at this site (incomplete on the Ogle surname, but full of their history) that Dolly Parton is a descendant of this same family. This is a fun site to visit . . . Lots of Ogle (and others) history. Capt. Joseph Ogle is not mentioned but he is a brother to my Major Thomas, who is mentioned. Enjoy . . . http://www.smokykin.com/ Doneva
