    1. [ILOGLE-L] German Telephone Book
    2. Donna Hoff-Grambau
    3. Here is the URL for the German Telephone Book. This doesn't give list of the people who have the name, instead it breaks it down by territory. http://w3g.med.uni-giessen.de/bin/teleinfo2.cgi It is a quantitative search. I just did a search on Stulken and there are 98 in Germany total. 87 in one paraticular area. That narrows it down for you since the name majorly occurs in that area. The greatest concentration is around the towns of Oldenburg, Emden, Aurich, Brake and Leer. Donna

    1. [ILOGLE-L] Germans to America
    2. Donna Hoff-Grambau
    3. Unfortunately much of the records related to Germans to America out of ports other than from the Wuerttemberg area have been destroyed. I just checked my Wuerttemberg Index and there were no Stulkens. Human migration is predictable in the sense that people go where others of their nationality and religion are already. If you can find out where the German community in Ogle County came from, that might give you a good clue as to where he was from. The Family History Center of the Mormon Church has a very good collection of German Records on CD in the IGI - many extracted church records. One of the important thing to remember is that Germany was only unified in the late 1800's, before that it was a series of Duchys or individual states, so people identified themselves as Wuerttembergians and Mecklenburgiche instead of Germans. They often named thier towns after the towns in Germany (Batavia in New York is an example). There is also a German phone book distribution - I've checked it for my in laws German names - and it will show you the areas in which the name is most common. Then join that list on the net and see what you can get. I joined the Mecklenburg-Schwerin List and connected with my MILs line back to 1630. Found a descendant of the only sibling that had stayed behind with her parents. Donna

    3. Many thanks, Gary. I've checked a number of the things you mentioned. I appreciate knowing that the marriages are recorded with the Ogle County Clerk. I'll check that one. Otherwise, the man seems to have left little trace. He was hired help, so owned no land until he got to NE. He was a charter member of First St. Paul's Lutheran in Hastings, but if he attended a Lutheran church in IL, he didn't do anything to get into the records. His obits led me to a brother in CA, but don't give his birthplace. We were in Aurora last summer. My husband's son lives there. Thanks for your help, Marilyn Stulken Racine, Wisconsin

    3. I'm guessing that these were German people? >From my very limited view of Ogle County, there were two areas where Germans concentrated. One around Lindenwood and the other aroundForreston and Leaf River. You should be able to get the marriage license from Ogle County Clerk. My ggrndparents were married there in 1872. The license did not have any parents names, but it is something you should collect. Have you checked the federal and state census for 1870, 1875? I don't suppose they would show up on the Platt maps if they didn't own the land. I've used a combination of Platt books and census data to plot within a mile of where my ancestors lived while in Ogle. My ancestors were with a group of families that they knew before comming to Ogle Co. They immigrated in 1864, and some left for Calhoun County Iowa in 1874. Then others followed in 1882. I've never found any of my immigrants on the ships passenger lists. From what I hear, the list wouldn't have given the original town anyway. Have you checked the local paper for obituaries of these people? That is where I have found all the towns of these immigrants. Sometimes it is spelled strange, but it is a place to start. 3. According to an Adams County, Nebraska, history book, my great-grandfather, Johann Friedrich (Fred John) STULKEN came to America around 1870 and settled first in Ogle Co IL, where he worked as a farm hand. The book also states that he was married in Illinois in 1875 to Helene LAMMERS. I know they were in Adams Co NE by 1876 because their oldest daughter was born there. I've never been able to locate him on any of the appropriate microfilmed passenger lists. I just tried "Germans to America" last Tuesday to see what I'd find there, although I did find Helene LAMMERS arriving in March of 1875, listed as "wife." I've checked with all the Lutheran churches in the area, but haven't found any record of him. If possible, I'd like to learn where he lived and for whom he worked while in Ogle County. If anyone has any info, I'd be grateful. Thanks. Marilyn Stulken Racine, Wisconsin
