The Scrapbooks were sent to me (Sharon Nordman Ogle) for the Ogle County Historical Society, Ruby Nash Museum. Sharon Hildebrand copied the pages from the books for the Byron Museum. The "original" Scrapbooks are in the Ruby Nash Museum (Ogle County Historical Society) in Oregon, IL. The lady that sent the books to the Ogle County Historical Society did not charge us anything and the Society is very appreciative of her generosity. I wanted to clear this up as the lady who donated the Scrapbooks to the Ogle County Historical Society is a member of this List and I don't want any misunderstanding as to where the Scrapbooks ended up. She was very generous and the membership is very grateful for her thoughtfulness. Sincerely, Sharon Nordman Ogle (Ogle County Historical Society Board Member)
Dear Roger & Jo Lyn ~ I ran across some photographs of Jacob Myers and the Ilers at the Ruby Nash Museum the other day. Jacob Myers was a member of our North Grove Christian Church when my 3rd great-grandfather Rev. George Atwood Brown was minister there in the 1880s and 1890s. I am going to copy the photos of Jacob Myers for a lady in our church whose husband is a descendant of Jacob. If you are interested, let me know and I can copy for you too at the same time. The photos run about $1 to $1.50 per page at the copy shop. They are good quality. Sincerely, Sharon Nordman Ogle in Ogle County, IL

A woman in the state of Oregon or Washington foun a scrapbook made of clippings from many years ago at a garage sale and she sent it on to the Byron museum as it contained info about Byron and Stillman - most of this has been copied and added to the book. At present the info has filled 3-4inch binders and it sill is a work in progress. Sharon Hildebrand is hoping to have it completed by the time of the fall festival in Stillman this year. The more orders we have, the cheaper the book will be. Please sign up now and get a great book of at least part of the history of Ogle County!

Roger, Do you happen to have any information on the Nathaniel Haynes-author of the article or George S. Kennedy mentioned in this article. Haynes, if memory serves me is buried in Jordan Cemetery in Lee Co. and is the son of Samuel Haynes and Rebecca Bechtal of Wash. Co. MD and Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co. IL. I am also looking for a Patrick Kennedyborn in Ireland and living Woosung in about 1860-70. I know Woosung is also Lee Co. but relatively close to Ogle line as well. By the way I just returned from a trip to PA and MD and found not only all the graves in Sharpsburg and Rhorersville that I wanted (Dietrick/Detrick/Detrich, Myers, Mumma, Roulette, Haynes/Haines/Hanes), but also talked to live Haynes decendents who has letters written by Susan Haynes Deitrick w/o Samuel who traveled to Ogle Co. Il in the 1840's by covered wagon. Other families who came with were Myers(Jacob,Peter and Paul), David Iler, Samuel Haynes, as well as many others. Would love to read anything you may have on info above. Thank you for all your hard work and wealth of research you have done. Are you and Sue in AZ for summer? Are you close to the fires? I pray that you are not! Looking forward to hearing from you. Jo Lyn Crofton (I live in Strphenson Co. Pearl City, IL but ancestors are mostly in Carroll Co.) However I do not believe it is the family I am looking for. My family was in Ogle county, Oregon Area in the 1840 census. Head of household Michael. A son, Frederick, was born to this family March 24, 1839 according to NARA records for Civil War Disabled Pensioners. There has been a suggestion that there was a name change Dana/Denny so I have been looking under both. So far nothing more than I have stated here has been uncovered. If you should obtain any further information I would be most thankful to learn of it. It is believed these people came from Ireland, but I have yet to prove it as I am still on 1839 as my most early date. Thank you, Adeline

I've just been reading thru these messages and am thoroughly confused. Hope someone can straighten me out.Jacob Hoose and Sabrina Burhite were my gggrandparents. That is the spelling passed down to me by my grandmother. I have several different sheets of paper that are not her handwriting, so I don't know where this info originally came from. According to what I have Olive Messenger was married to...wait when I look at one sheet more closely it looks like whoever wrote this originally put a very small "x" where thye name should be for Olive's husband. When my grandmother typed this over at some point she wrote Jacob which is the name above it. Okay, one mystery solved. Can anyone tell me when and by whom the name was changed to Burhite? I also have Isaac Messenger having been married to Anna Ward and I know that they are buried in Lake Co. Ohio. If anyone is interested in information on Jacob Hoose and Sabrina Burhite forward I have quite a bit. But obviously it ! should not be taken a truth. At this point I have about half of it varified and it seems correct. If interested email me. I'm happy to share. Nancy

Ogle County History What is now Ogle County was once a part of the Northwest Territory. In 1809 the Territory of Illinois was formed and included Wisconsin and Peninsular Michigan. In 1818 Illinois, in its present boundaries, became the 21st State to join the Union. Ogle County was formed in 1836 from a part of Jo Daviess County. The name, Ogle, was suggested by Thos. Ford in memory of Capt. Joseph Ogle who distinguished himself for his courage and coolness in the early days of the State’s history. The first session of the Ogle County Commissioner’ Court was held at Oregon on January 3, 1837, and Oregon was chosen to be the County Seat. Because there was so much dissension, efforts were made to divide the County and on February 27, 1839, the Legislature approved an act creating Lee County out of the southern half of Ogle county, with Dixon as its County Seat. In December 1839, the County Board ordered the town of Oregon to be called Florence; in 1843, however, it was renamed Oregon. Names of other towns were once different than those used today. Rochelle was once called Lane; Byron, Bloomingville; Polo, Buffalo Grove and St. Mary’s. Plans for a courthouse were adopted on December 4, 1838, and in 1841 the building was completed - only to be burned before it could be occupied. The present couthouse was completed for occupancy in 1891 at a total cost of $106,951.46 for building and equipment. On November 6, 1849, the electorate voted for township organization and the Commissioner’ Court appointed three men to divide the county into towns. Their report, filed February 5, 1850 named nineteen townships, comprising an area of 757 sq. mi. The first special meeting of the Board of Supervisors was held November 11, 1850. In 1972, in compliance with the State Legislature’s decision on reapportionment, Ogle County held its first election to elect County Board members. The county was divided into four districts, with six members from each district. This replaced the system whereby the township supervisors served as the County Board. A supervisor may also be a County Board member but not necessarily. The 1998 estimated census shows a County population of 50,511. There are presently approximately 30,539 registered voters. Three State parks are located in Ogle County. The White Pines State Park is located on the Pines Road between Polo and Oregon. Lowden Memorial Park is one mile north of Oregon on the east side of Rock River. Lorado Taft’s famous Blackhawk statue and the Northern Illinois University Field Campus are located in the Lowden Memorial Park. Castle Rock State Park is located on Illinois Route 2 south of Oregon. Lowden-Miller State Forest is located 5 miles South of Oregon on South Lowden Road. Weld Park, located in Marion Township, was given to the County to maintain as a County Park. Sinnissippi Farms southeast of Oregon in Oregon/Nashua Township is the home of former Governor Frank O. Lowden. The Lowden Boy Scout Camp and Camp Medill McCormick for Girl Scouts are located in Ogle County. In 1962 the Ogle County Historical Society opened a museum in the Ruby Nash home in Oregon. This is open to the public on week ends during the summer months. Renovation of the interior of the Courthouse was completed in 1984 at a cost of $1,500,000.00. I believe there are at the Chamber of Commerce, and Byron Museum. As far as the Funeral Home's go... If it was held in Byron that Funeral Home does not exist anymore, although there is one there, I wouldn't imagine they keep things that far back. It is possible he died in another surrounding county and then was buried in Byron. Winnebago County is the closest county alot of person died in Winnebago County and then buried in another County. Most of my relatives died in a hospital in Rockford, Winnebago Co., then were buried in Ogle County. The death record would be located in the county he died. Best bet is to check surrounding counties for death certs. I would be glad to take photos of the grave and stones in Byron for you, if you want them.

I'm very familiar with the White Rock Cemetary....I grew up on the farm that adjoins it....so I know those slew of Hayengas in and out of the cemetary plots. Thanks for the clarification on the middle names....it's confusing to say the least when it comes to the Masons in our clan. Oh and btw, the Hayenga family doesn't own the cemetary.....middle brother of mine is on the committee....but it's a township property I believe....and taken care of by a committee......the Hayenga's have just made a donation or two of land to the cemetary. If you're ever in need of a copy of all your relatives and want to know how the branches interweave and get tangled up...let me know. A lot of my information started with the research Luke Demes did...that and what my mother had put together. I'd love to add any information you can share with me on your branch. We tend to try and remember those that have passed on...and then forget to bring the rolls up to date with those of us still living.....grin. Once again...nice to meet you...if we haven't already met before. Sincerely, Dawn (Hayenga) Somers

>From "History of the Disciples of Christ in Illinois 1819-1914", Nathaniel Haynes, 2 vol, Cincinnati, The Standard Publishing Co, 1914. Reprint 2000 by Heritage Books, Inc. "Pine Creek Churck, in Polo, organized 1860, by Robert Moffett and Charles Sherwood: present membership, 98; value of property, $3,500; Bible school began 1860; present enrollment, 55." "This is one of the truly great churches of Illinois. It is located ten miles southeast of Polo. Into this community there came, about 1857, David I. Funk, Charles Widney, Abram Witmer, David Bovey and other kindred spirits. Mr. Funk was a native of Washington County, Md. For thirty years he had been an elder in the "Dunker" Church, but under the preaching of Mr. Campbell was led to more scriptural ground. He died in 1876 at the age of eight-nine years. These men, with their families, began to hold meetings for public worship in the Pennsylvania Corners Schoolhouse. Here the church was organized. At this meeting Robert Moffett presided and C. W. Sherwood served as secretary. The officers elected were Charles Widney, Abram Witment, G.T. Johnson, elders, with David I. Funk, Daniel Bovey, and John Welty, deacons." "Of the earlier preachers who served the church, other than Mr. Sherwood and Mr. Moffett, were Geo. F. Johnston, John Ross, Daniel and Henry How4e, L.D. Waldo, Adam Adamson, Mr. Thornberry and Jasper Moss; later came G.L. Applegage, T.B. Stanley, G.W. Ross, J.H. Carr, G.W. Pearl, W. H. McGinnis and J.B. Wright. D.F. Seyster is now in the fifth year of the third period of his pastorate." "The congrgation has made very liberal and cheerful contributions of its members to the churches at Mt. Morris, Polor, Grand Detour and Dixon." "Besides, the following men have been given by this fruitful mother to the Christian ministry: Geo. Hamilton, D.F. Seyster, G.A. Miller, L.T. Faulders, C. Roy Staufer, and C. Lee Staufer. This church has indeed walked well pleasing before the Lord to have had her service crowned with such significant products." Then is a paragraph on missionary activities. "Henry H. Powell has been Bible-school superintendent for thirteen consecutive years." "Besides the names already written, those of Wilson, Hammer, Drenner, Johnson, Wise, Netz, Pohrer, Wolf, Sheely, and Higby will be honored and remembered for fidelity and good works."
