    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Jh.2ADE/1271 Message Board Post: I am seeking the grave of Dorsin Rosecrans. Sometimes spelled Dorson Rosencranz. He was the son of Dorsin and Phebe Rosecrans. He was born in Ogle County, Illinois, in 1839. He enlisted May 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. C, 13th Illinois Infantry. His records show he was discharged for disability on September 8, !863. Family tradition says he died at Memphis, TN, in 1863. I checked the Memphis National Cemetery and he is not listed. I am wondering if he was returned to Ogle County for burial. I would appreciate your help.

    1. Re: [ILOGLE] [OGLE] Question of Migration Patterns
    2. Hello Again; That may be so in some cases.. But Most people from Washington County , MD. were Brethren or German Baptist Brethren who didn't believe in war and were leaving that area due to the war that broke out in the early eighteen sixties.. History does not mention these reasons for such migrations... The large wagon trains arrived in Ogle Co., IL. from 1833 throughout 1864 with these Brethren, most of them paying for their farmlands as they farmed them... My Great Great Grandfather rented six farms from the government before he actually purchased them... Most the migrations were later than 1833, as in the case of my GG Grandmother's family who migrated in 1836. Their were a few lands given by the government, but most were paid for... I had no early relatives who served in the war (civil), who left a long time before the war ever broke out... At least twenty years... My question is: What war was it they gave lands for, or service...? Most of Ogle Counties residents who migrated would of had to serve after they arrived as the Civil War was 1861-1865. 3. If you study history you will find that these migrations follow that openings of lands due to land grants some of which were payments for services as war pensions and when the government had pay with land instead of cash for other services rendered. Movements went on like this often and account for large movements of groups of people from one state to another. 3. I also find this interesting, my group moved from Delaware Co. Ohio to Ogle Co. abt. 1848 (FROST, COLE) and in my research notice several families that seemed to have moved from the same location. Originally mine came from Putnam/Dutchess Counties, NY. (1821-24) to Delaware Co. Ohio. John Blair

    1. Re: [ILOGLE] Re: Question of migration patterns
    2. Hello everyone; Just a few things to add to the thread. Many came to Ogle Co., IL. during 1833 through the early 1850's were most likely seeking lands at a fair price in which to raise their families. Although the farming was getting unstable in Washington Co., MD. and the eastern states due to bad weather conditions in those times, many had heard of a great vast land that was available at low prices, and much was available in Ogle Co., in those times. Just as my ancestors who migrated from Washington County, Maryland in 1844, with a great exodus of German Baptist Brethren by wagon train... These families would write back home and tell of fertile and rich lands of Ogle County, Illinois... I have a few letters that were sent back east by family members trying to pursuede other members of the family to join them. In my case my ZELLERS family came to Ogle County after my GGG Grandparents Daniel and Elizabeth (FRIDLEY) LONG sent information regarding Ogle Co. they arrived in 1836... Only one of the families children stayed in Washington Co., MD. The rest migrated to Ogle Co., IL... Many things had a important role in many migrations from the east and I am sure there are many different reasons for these that occurred in the early to mid 1800's. Many never took place till after 1832 when the Blackhawk Wars raged the lands of Ogle Co., IL... Some earlier settlers never made it and were killed by Indians trying to make their way to the new lands... After the Blackhawk Wars in 1832 that is when most migrations took place.. For some knew and feared the wars and they knew it was wild and extreme land to try and migrate to, after the wars were completed, then news was sent east and the ok was sounded for many to come to Ogle Co., Illinois... 3. Hi! I'm guessing that there were ads and people touting the great opportunities of Illinois just like the ads and people that came through the NY Finger Lakes area (where my father's family is from) that touted the great and fertile state of Michigan! And then, later on, the California advertisers were in Illinois, which is how my Graves (my mother's family) ended up there, touting the farm opportunities in the Southern portion of the state. People have to remember that the immigrants really held on to the idea that America was the place that they could own a piece of land, and come to prominence of their own hard work, rather than being born to it like in the old country. Most people today are too cynical to grasp this concept, but it would have been a large motivating factor to most of our immigrant relations. I, for one, would not be moving cross country today unless it came with a huge pay increase :-) Just a thought, Concetta
