In a message dated 1/11/2004 1:47:04 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I made a note that Kett's History of Ogle County (1878) mentions Aaron's son on page 721. Also, he was involved in an incident in which he along with 110 men shot two "bad guys" The 111 men were brought to trial for murder. All were acquitted. That article can be found in the Illinois State Genealogical Society Vol. 28, No. 4 Winter 1996. I don't have that copy maybe you can contact the Ogle Gen Soc. To the person requesting the information that Leonard Jacobs replied to (as above), I go to the Historical Society almost every Thursday for our meetings and would be happy to find the article that he mentions. If you would send me your USPS address I can mail to you. Sincerely, Sharon Nordman Ogle Ogle County Historical Society
Hi! Iput together some Ogle County, Illinois history, and I remember the name of Aaron Billig. (I think Billig means not expensive in German). He was in the 1840 census of Maryland Precinct. The latter is not the same as Maryland Township of today, althought they are in the same area of the county. In 1850 the people voted in a township form of governamen, and created townships then. I made a note that Kett's History of Ogle County (1878) mentions Aaron's son on page 721. They have a web site. I Put together a booklet OGLE, THROUGH A GLASS DIMLY. A short piece in there, shows that the above firing squad (111) were not gung ho about the execution. It can be had for $15. I suggest you get the other and if you want to know a little more, the booklet is available from me. Attempting to prove kinship of Annanias N. BILLIG, Samuel and William BILLIG, all of whom enlisted in the Union Army from Forreston, Ogle, IL. Annanias, with the 34th Illinois Infantry, fought the Battle of Shiloh, and with these (likely) brothers, was decorated for Distinguished Service. 1880, Annanias removed to Ross, Franklin, Iowa. We were sitting out on his screened in front porch that summer afternoon. One thing Ben told me which I can see now could not have been was that he said that if Jennie Beer Reints had lived she would have been his mother, but by everything I can see, Ben's mother died and then Conrad married Jennie and then she died. I do have a picture of Jennie and the children. It is in my mother's Beer book. I do not have the directory information handy. I will take a look next time I go to the library and see if I see any of the aforementioned names. Can anyone else help here? Ellen -----Original Message----- From: Rick Jennings [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 02, 2004 12:23 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [ILOGLE] Photo studios Ellen, Thanks so much for your help! I have begun following your suggestions by following the link to Family Tree Magazine, which looks to be an invaluable resource. I even have a census subscription, but hadn't thought to check the census for the photographers! Can you shed any further light on local business directories? That idea HAD occurred to me, so I wrote the local libraries from the cities involved (Mt. Morris, Oregon and Polo) with decidedly mixed results so far. Thanks to your help I feel like I've already made some progress. Rick -----Original Message----- From: Kennedy [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, January 01, 2004 5:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [ILOGLE] Photo studios Family Tree magazine did an article on this which can be found at the following location: http://www.familytreemagazine.com/photos/dec04-03.htm Tin types were used from the 1840's to the 1930's, according to this article. If you can take a look at this and see if you can narrow down the dates of each, it would narrow down the search of each of the photographers. Then there are multiple sources we can look at. So for instance, if we take Joseph Hoskins in the census. He can be found in the 1880 census in Mount Morris age 35 occupation photographer living with Joseph and Elizabeth Thomas. I could not find him in the 1870 or 1900 census for Mount Morris. Next I would try the local directories starting with 1880 going forward and then backward - which I don't have access to at the moment, but narrowing the dates will allow you to request more focused lookups. That would narrow your potential years down significantly. There were two other brothers, Sikka and Reinkus Reints (spelling unclear). Parents of the boys were Sweer H. Reints and Marie Johnson Reints. If anyone knows of the children of Sikka Reints of the German Valley area in Stephenson County, I'd like to share data. I believe there may have been descendants of his living in that vacinity after he died in the 1850's of small pox along with three of his children. Their remains are buried in Silver Creek Cemetary in German Valley. If anyone is interested in the family ties of the Reints in Ogle and Stephenson County, I'd be glad to share information.
Hi Listers, My gg grandmother was Angeline DeButts, b. 2 Apr 1813 in Hanyshire, Virginia (later West Virginia). She married my gg grandfather, John Lord, on 13 May 1841 in Dixon. It was the second marriage for both. They lived subsequently in Palmyra, and the family is well-known in Lee County. On her marriage license Angeline gives her name as Ann E. Accaton. Presumably the surname of her first husband was Accaton, although I can find no record of anyone by that name. Can anyone give me any information on the Accaton or DeButts families. I do know that Angeline was in Ogle County before her marriage to John Lord, and that there were other DeButtses there, too. Thanks. Bill Lord, in Tucson, Arizona
