    3. I have ntoiced my family moved west along Highway 20 as well. Deitrichs, Hawks, and Heiters went west to Ft. Dodge and then headed north to Kossuth County. What prompted some of them to later head to North Dakota I'll never know but my grand mother met Jesse Preskey from Indiana there and together they headed to Alberta Canada. emueller44 <emueller44@cox.net> wrote: Many years ago I was told a story about the railroad land for sale in Iowa. (My ggrandfather purchased his farm land from the RR in Sioux County, IA about 1884.) It seems that the government gave the land to the RR's for the development of the West, and what they didn't use, they sold for their own profit. Can someone add to or correct me on this? 3. Found this on the Jones County website..... After the Civil War the railroads had built into the Midwest which fueled a mass migration farther west in the prairie. The surge westward was powered by the railroad lines. They tendered reduced fares to immigrants and with the wide swaths of land (6 ½ million acres in Nebraska alone) the Federal government had granted the rail companies along their rights-of-way, they offered inexpensive farmland to potential citizens. The Grange, a national farmers union, formed mainly to oppose the railroads' land grab and high freight rates. Still, the coming of the railroad was immediately and ultimately a great boon to the settlers. It furnished much work for which the settlers secured real money. Large numbers of men with their horses and mules were needed to do the grading. Tons of stone were necessary for bridges and piers. Millions of ties were sought and great quantities of cordwood (before coal) were consumed by the locomotives. Food for men and animals found a market at good prices. Ultimately the effect of the railroad was as though the manufacturer of the East, the fruit grower of Florida and the Pacific Coast, the coal dealer of Illinois, and the lumberman of Wisconsin, had moved into the same county with the settler. 3. There is a lot of information on the Newcomers in the History of Western Maryland, Washington County section on pages 1037-1040. Christian Newcomer was a Bishop there until he did in 1830; he was one of three sons of Wolfgang Newcomer who arrived from Switzerland about 1720. The other brothers were Henry and Peter; there were also five daughters. I don't know for sure but might guess the Ogle County Newcomers are related to these. I think the History can be searched on Ancestry.com; I can scan in the pages for you if you wish. -----Original Message----- From: Joe/Judy Gallegos [mailto:joeandjudy@webtv.net] Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2006 2:43 AM To: ILOGLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Christian Newcomer Can't place him with any Newcomer in my files but found the following information that may help someone. 3. Depends upon location. Vast tracts in the western states were given to the railroads to encourage settlement and development. However, I believe that Janice is correct about Iowa land. 2. Flossmoior, IL 06.04.10 Friend: It appears that many pioneering families settled, at least temporarily, in Ogle county but their offspring moved on westward into Iowa or beyond. They almost all seem to have followed the "ridge route" that later came to be known as AYP for Atlantic Yellowstone and pacific and finally US Highway 20. There are records of Ogles, Tiltons, Thompsons across Galena, Freeport and Dubuque and into Iowa. Some seemed to settle in NE Iowa [along the trail] but my folks kept going on to NW Iowa [Cherokee County] and some kept going. I, for one, would like to know what prompted these migrations. Any clues? The soil was great as far as NW Iowa and represents some of the finest crop producing land in the world. 3. I have a few leads that are positive and one I consider neg. 1. Probate from Hegins twp. Deitrich, John written Oct 18, 1865. (to)wf. Magdalena to pers. Prop..to son Levi has deed for my place of 106 Ac. ..to George; John; Catharine, w/Henry HOLLENBACH; Lydia, w/Joseph FORD; Susanna only or c/o w/ Abraham Kuntz; Elisabeth Schreiber Executor; John Dietrich Jr. ( I note in the probate that Deitrich is also spelled Dietrich) 2.1870 Leaf River census has Levi 48 and Lydia 38 Deter and children Secilia 16 and Catharine 8 AND Madelena 79. Mother is living with them. Note this places Magdalena living with them after the probate date. John could have died before the 1870 census and Mag (widow) didn't want to be left behind and hopped the wagon for Leaf River. Also her bd is abt 1791 and her husbands is Dec of 1789. 3. Now here is where I have a question. In 1850 Lower Mahan..twp Schuylkill Co. dwelling # 227 I have Christian and Elizabeth family and in dwelling # 6 I have John and Mag Deater family. Levi and other children with simalar names to Probate and namesakes are there but the ages are off. So... I need to do more research. I have compared the ages to the 1840 census but I don't have the results handy. I still maintain that Levi's parents are John and Magdalena Deitrich. I will soon be going to travelling east and plan to stop in NB, IA, and IL to find some documents. One I want to find is the original 1885 IA state census to see who charles the now 14 yr old farm worker is living with. I hope it is a Deitrich or Hawk . 1. Re: [IL-OGLE] Myers
    2. HI John, So glad you found the mailing list. There are a couple different formats or places you can post things. Here of course and there are also forums or boards that you can post on. Actually all places are the best way as not all people come to the mailing list (such as this). Don't you wish you started earlier! I do and I am going to be 50. So many questions for the people who went before us! http://genforum.genealogy.com/ you can click on this link and then go to US States to find IL and any other state you like, then in the upper right hand side there is a link to the individual counties. You have to sign in, meaning set up a name, email and password but it is free. The other one http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/script/main/rw you would go through it the same, finding the state then the county. With this last message board the posts you put on the Ogle Co. Board would also show up on this list, it just helps people see it that may not monitor the boards. To start here on the mailing list it is best to put the surname (like you did) and maybe the location and or years in the subject line to get peoples attention. Something like "Looking for my grandfather" does not give people enough info to want to read it. Include what you have and what you are looking for. With your Myers, or Ogle etc. Tell us what you are seeking. as you read more of the posts you will see what others write. This is a very good list with a lot of people helping and searching. also go to the Ogle Web site and scroll down and do a search on that page for your surnames, there is a lot on the site, cemeteries, census info and more. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilogle/ Have fun and enjoy Laurie Rochelle, IL At 12:46 AM 4/3/2006, you wrote: >Other than Thompson, Ogle and Tilton come to mind. > >My grandparents moved on to settle in Larrabee, Cherokee County, Iowa. 3. Ok, No problem John Jones, born 1823 in Beaver Creek, MD - died 7/10/1884 in Pine Creek married Susanna Traver, born 4/6/1844 in MD - died 3/15/1923 Married on 3/18/1864 in Ogle Co. IL Child: Ida Ellen Jones was born 1863 and married George C. Rizner on 11/28/1880 Susanna Traver then married John Jones brother Cyrus Henry Jones (My ggg grandfather). Layne, where did you see those dates at? Old records or something?? ----- Original Message ----- From: Layne Holley<mailto:laholley1@insightbb.com> To: ILOGLE-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:ILOGLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 03, 2006 12:06 PM Subject: [IL-OGLE] John Jones and Susanna Traver You lost me at John Jones and Susanna Traver. Susanna listed as being born about 1852 and married in 1864. This would make her about 12 years old when married and 29 years younger than her husband. Susanna's daughter listed as Ida Ellen Jones, born about 1861, four years before Susanna was married to John Jones. Ida married to a man born about 1856, four years younger than Ida's mother? Chronologically, someone is out of place here. Layne (Mr.) Layne A.
