October 5, 2003 The Sangamon County Historical Society's Cemetery Walk, the afternoon of October 5 at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield..  Information can be obtained from Doug Pokorsky, President, who is employed by the Springfield Journal-Register newspaper . Sunday afternoon, October 19, 2003 CEMETERY WALK: SPONSORED BY ROCHESTER HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY 3 sites:        Rochester Cemetery, Buckhart (Oak Hill) Cemetery, Mottarville/South Fork Cemetery        Society members will portray 9 former residents of the Rochester community.  They include: the Rev. John Cooper, for whom Cooper Township is named; James McCoy, very early settler; a member of the early Twist family - Phoebe; Maria Bolden, an African-American and daughter of slaves, who was an important part of several Rochester family households (Kathryn Harris, Director of the IL Historic Library, will present Maria's story); Rose Middlekauf, an area teacher for many, many years; Preston Breckenridge George who wanted the tallest marker in the Mottarville Cemetery and made sure to have it; Robert Sattley, a member of the Sattley manufacturing family in Springfield; Adner Smith; and Robert North, who came to Cooper Township in 1829. Genealogical information on these early families is included in many of the presentations; refreshments will be served at each site, and new memberships and donations will be gratefully received.
