For years I had wondered how a woman of Portugese descent, one of my aunts, happened to turn up mid-19th century in central Illinois---then I happened upon the USGenWeb site's link re the religious exiles from Madeira. What a fascinating story! I immediately shared it with my 85 year-old cousin whose mother was that Portugese aunt and who had lived his entire life without once hearing the story of how the exiles came to Illinois in 1849. I've now printed out reams of information and mailed it to him, also he's now in touch with kinsmen who bear his mother's surname, so you can imagine how pleased and thrilled he is. You who do all the tedious labor of searching, organizing, typing, and entering such infomation, please know the good you do. Nora
