Richard had gone to the California Gold Rush from Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, and had come back successful. The family rumor is that Ellen took his money and used it to endow the Rout College in Jacksonville. I would suppose that this would have been around 1849 to 1851. I cannot find any record of the existence of a Rout College. Can anyone help? Thank you.
